Talk:FAQ on The Bogleheads® Facebook page

From Bogleheads

I modified the formatting to align with the wiki. Nice job, here's some helpful suggestions:

  • Use the "H1" through "H5" toolbar icons to set the heading levels 1 through five. In wiki text, that's translated to the equal signs surrounding the headings.
  • Hover your mouse over the editing toolbar to view the help for each icon. Click on "Toolbar help" on the left side of the page. Better yet, open the help in a new browser tab so you can jump back and forth if needed.
  • Take a look at the way URLs are used. Don't use too many on the page unless necessary.
  • Use "Show Preview" to see your edits before saving the page. Edit, preview, then edit as many times as necessary until you are ready to save the page. It doesn't hurt to save often, but the wiki will record every page saved as a new version. No big deal, just thought to mention it.

Consider adding some stronger wording about privacy. Forum members often post personal financial information, such as salary or investment information. Their screen names give a members anonymity. If you link your real name on facebook to your screen name in the forum, all of that information is now publicly connected. Consider that the linking of financial information with facebook will not only be seen by all your friends, but be data mined for commercial gain.

If the above is intimidating, don't worry about it. Just keep updating and someone will help format it later.

If you need specific help with something, just ask here (add after the last post on this page)

Hi, noticed your comments. The comment on Forum usernames and Facebook profile names is an excellent observation. Please take a look at the Facebook FAQ and comment on Privacy and access considerations.

First, I removed the References section. I didn't know if you knew how to edit the talk page (discussion tab), so I placed instructions there so you could find it. No longer needed, i.e. you found this page.

I see what you were trying to do with the headings. The 2nd level outline bold fonts look out of place. The wiki's database is tracking the headings (for the table of contents, etc.), so we need to keep consistent with the headings. I changed the Info and Wall page headings to normal text. See if this works for you. You could also underline them, but people might be confused and think they were links.

Other fixes:

  • I changed the "6 investing principles" from a URL to internal wiki page link (toolbar 3rd icon from the left). This removes the URL link symbol and is easier to read. Also, readers see this is a wiki page vs. web URL.
  • The gmail address is fixed. I used the "No Wiki" tag (toolbar 3rd icon from the right) to tell the wiki not to interpret this as a link.

Saving pages: The recent changes (left sidebar menu) and history tab (above) shows you were making frequent page saves. It's not a problem. It might be faster if you made your edits, Show preview, then continued edit/Show preview and Save page when you are done. Up to you, it's a matter of experience. Just thought to mention it.

Wiki Facebook links: Since this FAQ page is publicly viewable, I modified the left sidebar for Facebook and Facebook FAQ links. Also, the main page has a Facebook link at the bottom of the news feed box.

Facebook Info page, read more... comments: All of the links on that web page are broken. Note the link text is easily copied to the browser's address bar to follow the URL. Consider changing the URLs to show a text name instead of the URL itself. For example, www.bogleheads.org/support.htm would display as Bogleheads Support page. I think you are just missing the HTML code, but I don't know how pages are edited on Facebook. --LadyGeek 12:15, 25 November 2010 (EST)
