Oh yes, we all enjoyed the meetings - and we put out a pretty good buffet, too :D Hard to discuss finance on an empty stomach! Something to look forward to in the not-too-distant future we hope.

Re: Retirement Life Stage Chapter Meeting- Finding Purpose in Retirement- 2/23/2022

Post by Miriam2 »

Hi South Florida 🌴 8-)

All retirees and pre-retirees may find this unique upcoming Bogleheads meeting helpful - "Finding Your Purpose in Retirement" :happy

This zoom meeting is hosted by the Pre/Early Retirement and Retirement Life Stage chapters on Wed. Feb. 23, 2022, starting at 8:00 pm ET.
5 pm Pacific Time
6 pm Mountain
7 pm Central
8 pm Eastern

This meeting is "unique" because - in addition to the regular Q&A portion by everyone - it will first include a Boglehead Focus Group with retirement Professor Jill Steinberg discussing how they handled, or couldn't handle, this very important aspect of retirement: finding your purpose in retirement.

Although the target audience is retirees and pre-retirees - all Bogleheads are welcome to join 8-)

Meeting Format: This meeting's format came about following the very successful Nov. 10, 2021 meeting with Professor Jill Steinberg (** see resume below) on "Successful Retirement: From Retiring to Rewiring." The Nov. 10th meeting explored the non-financial issues that Bogleheads experienced when moving into retirement, and how people preparing for retirement can better plan for this transition.

This upcoming meeting on Feb. 23 is a follow-up, designed to explore what retirement researchers have found to be one of the most serious aspects of transitioning from a life of work purpose to a retirement with what?? purpose. Dr. Steinberg suggested using the focus group format.

-- 1st hour - A small number of Boglehead volunteers (the Focus Group 8-) ) will be selected in advance (by the Pre-Retirement Life Stage Chapter coordinators) who are willing to be interviewed by Dr. Steinberg during the zoom meeting (anonymously, if desired), discussing how "Finding Purpose in Retirement" has applied to their own lives. Everyone else will observe the focus group discussion and Dr. Steinberg's suggestions.

-- 2nd hour - Then the meeting will open up and everyone will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their perspectives and experiences, along with open Q&A on other retirement topics you may have.

How to RSVP or be part of the Focus Group: You can RSVP (anonymously) for the meeting HERE. If you wish to be part of the focus group, also include your first name, last initial, and email address on the RSVP form and you will be contacted by email with further details.

The Zoom link will be posted on the Bogleheads Calendar of Events a week before the meeting.

** Jill Steinberg Background:
Jill Steinberg, Ph.D. is an Emeritus Professor at San Jose State University, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Salzburg Fellow, and author and Founder of MyRetirementWorks.com. She received her undergraduate degree from Boston University in 1972 and doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Ohio State University in 1978. She teaches classes and has presented her research on Successful Retirement to universities including B.U., Google and other professional organizations.

Her research, “Successful Retirement: From Retiring to Rewiring” was published this year in: The Aging Consumer: Perspectives from Psychology and Marketing, 2nd edition, Eds: Drolet and Yoon (Routledge, 2021). Additionally, she has been working with the University of Michigan Ross Business School since the beginning of COVID.

Re: Upcoming March Bogleheads zoom meetings

Post by Miriam2 »

Hi South Florida 🌴 8-)

Here are several upcoming Bogleheads online meetings you may enjoy!

(1) Next San Francisco Bogleheads Meeting Thur. March 17, 2022, 10:00 pm ET (7:00 pm PT)

Topic: What’s The Best Annuity For You?...and do you even need one?

Stan The Annuity Man 8-) will go through all annuity types and fully explain the good, bad, limitations, and benefits of each one. He will explain how to easily determine if you need an annuity…and if so, which type would provide the highest contractual guarantee….and how to shop all carriers.

Here is the Zoom link, the complete link is on the BH Calendar of Events.

(2) The Pre-Retirement & Retirement Life Stage Chapters meeting on Wed. March 23, 2022, at 8:00 pm ET will be an interesting open discussion on Relocating for Retirement.

Something to think about if you're headed into retirement - are you going to relocate? And if you have retired, did you relocate or decide not to? Many things to talk about - the pros and cons of relocating, decisions to make, things to look out for, logistics of moving, settling into a new place, from HCOL to LCOL, closer to family or farther away, sunshine & seashore or mountains & snow, another state or another country - there's lots to consider and share in an open discussion :happy

Pre & Retired Life Stage Meeting- 4/6/2022- 8:00 pm ET- "The Death Book"

Post by Miriam2 »

Hi South Florida - and Honorary South Florida - Bogleheads 🌴 8-)

The Pre & Early Retirement and Retired Life Stage Chapters are holding an important zoom meeting tomorrow, Wed. April 6, 2022, at 8:00 pm ET, on how to document your personal financial details so your surviving spouse or family knows what is there, where it is, how to get it, and what to do in case you croak, die, or become incapacitated. :annoyed

Bogleheads have given this document many names over the years: the "In Case I Croak Book"; "The Death Book"; or Taylor's more gentlemanly "Letter of Final Instructions". :happy

Whatever you call it - it needs to be done. But how are you going to do it? In many cases, only one spouse or partner handles most of the financial tasks, so how can you make these directions easier for your surviving spouse and family?

Please share your thoughts and personal experiences on the topic, "Documenting Financial Information for Surviving Spouse or Executor." All Bogleheads are welcome :happy

5 pm Pacific
6 pm Mountain
7 pm Central
8 pm Eastern

Although it's not necessary to RSVP for the meeting, you can RSVP and submit your questions HERE. All responses are anonymous.

Hi South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

Everyone is invited to the Boston Bogleheads next zoom meeting on Sat. April 23, 2022, at 12:00 noon ET - Chris Pederson, Director of Research at The Merriman Financial Education Foundation, will give a presentation on: Simple & Effective Balanced Lifetime Portfolios - 2022 Update

Chris will present several very simple portfolios that achieve diversification across industries, geographies, stocks, bonds, and various equity premium factors. He'll also cover 2 Funds for Life strategies that augment target-date funds to reduce risk with age, increase expected returns, raise safe withdrawal rates, and achieve higher overall survival rates. Finally, he'll compare past performance to more complex approaches and show that complexity is not a necessity in accumulation or retirement. The presentation will be followed by Q&A, with ample time for discussion.

Hi,

First time here - long time on the reddit boglehead subreddit. I live in Aventura and Brickell, Miami, FL. I'd love to get together in person with like-minded bogleheads. Would anyone want to get together?

I see that there used to be in-person meetings but now they're all on zoom. If you're comfortable getting together at a Starbucks or something in the area let me know, also with a mask on! :)

Thanks!

Hi sunshine-living and welcome to the Bogleheads :D

Your idea for smaller in-person get-togethers is a great idea and many South Florida Bogleheads may be interested!

As of now and for the near future, we are not holding our memorable large in-person meetings - complete with our delicious buffet, sandwiches provided by Taylor :D , coffee and sodas and home-made cookies, and with wonderful discussions of anything and everything personal finance - at the Stirling Road Library in Hollywood :( We will let everyone know when these meetings resume.

In the meantime, our Zoom meetings have been a great success and we're able to meet with Bogleheads from around the country and discuss far-ranging personal finance topics and hear presentations from well-known authors.

Sunshine - please let me know if you need any suggestions or help organizing the smaller local get-togethers 8-)

Post by Miriam2 »

Hi South Florida Bogleheads 🌴 8-)

Please join the NYC and San Antonio Bogleheads Chapters as they present a discussion on the empowering overlap and timeless practical tools found from both the ancient philosophy of Stoicism and modern Behavioral Finance 8-)

Wed. August 24, 2022 - 8pm–10pm ET

Topics will include the connection between Stoicism and finance concepts to help us achieve our personal financial goals and peace of mind -

-- loss aversion & framing to help us make good financial decisions (even in turbulent markets)
-- focusing on what is in our control & differentiating between what we can change and what we can't
-- appreciate what we have more than feeling misery over what we don't have
-- focus on putting in our best effort rather than defining success by the outcome
-- finding strength and tranquility through objectivity and rationality
-- controlling our reactions rather than letting an outcome define our experience
-- identifying biases to make better choices

Post by Miriam2 »

Hello South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

We are teaming up with the NYC Bogleheads Local Chapter to host Eric Balchunas, the author of "The Bogle Effect," for our upcoming zoom meeting on Wed. Nov. 2, 2022, at 8:00 pm ET. All Bogleheads are welcome to join us for the presentation; please let me know if you can help with the meeting :happy

Eric Balchunas gave the enjoyable keynote presentation at the recent Bogleheads Conference in Chicago, discussing his meetings with John Bogle and the impact Mr. Bogle had on the personal investing world. We're looking forward to having Eric at our on-line meeting, especially for those Bogleheads who were not at the Conference. There will be ample time for Q&A.

Eric talks about the Bogleheads and Taylor Larimore and our website forum in his book and wrote: "The site has no bells and whistles to divert from the content - which is the message boards and the discussions about all things investing. . . . The Bogleheads could be a force to come for generations."

Image

The meeting is open to all Bogleheads. RSVPs are appreciated but not necessary, and you can submit Qs ahead of time HERE. All responses are anonymous.

Here is the Zoom link - and the link is also posted on the Bogleheads Blog Calendar of Events.

Some reviews of "The Bogle Effect" -

"Eric Balchunas has not only written the definitive professional biography of John Bogle, but he has done so with a penetrating honesty and narrative grace rare in the genre. Read, enjoy, and, most important, absorb the wisdom of the most important investor ever to have lived."
-- William Bernstein, Author of The Four Pillars of Investing and A Splendid Exchange

"Eric Balchunas's The Bogle Effect is a powerful and captivating exploration of how John Bogle and Vanguard revolutionized the entire financial industry. A must-read for Wall Street beginners and veterans alike."
-- Arthur Levitt, Former chairman, the Securities and Exchange Commission

Hope everyone can join us! :happy

FYI, Ben Felix offers another superb analysis on the Rational Reminder podcast (also on YouTube) about if/when Index Funds might reach a "tipping point" where they impact price discovery and the "efficient market"... https://youtu.be/m9PXPjAQVeg That segment begins at the 9:10 mark.

This is a great companion piece to yesterday's South FL/NYC Chapter meeting with Eric Balchunas about "The Bogle Effect" (recording will be posted on our YouTube Channel ASAP).

Bottom line... the research (to date) shows we're a LONG way from that (if ever). Research shows the ongoing migration from active to passive managers is comprised of a balanced mix of both "skilled" and "unskilled" managers leaving active, so the net effect is not eroding Index/Passive performance.

BH zoom meeting "One More Year" Syndrome- Wed Dec 7, 2022- 8:00 pm ET

Post by Miriam2 »

The Pre/Early Retirement Life Stage chapter is hosting an interesting zoom meeting on Wed. Dec. 7, 2022, starting at 8:00 pm ET on the pressing retirement question: Should I Work One More Year? fondly known as the One More Year Syndrome

This will be an open discussion with people sharing their experiences with "One More Year" Syndrome and how they handled this (or didn't handle it so well), what they learned from it (or wished they learned), how it affected their finances and ultimate retirement plans, etc. The meeting is informal, come as you are, and it's fine to keep your video off for anonymity.

"One More Year Syndrome" is the temptation to work just one more year past your planned retirement date, or deciding when to quit your job but then finding difficulty actually doing it.

Targeted audience: anyone who is thinking of retiring or has retired, and of course, all Bogleheads are invited to attend 8-)

You can RSVP for the meeting HERE - and all responses are anonymous. It's not necessary to RSVP to attend, come and bring all your Qs and enjoy the discussion.

HERE is the Zoom link for the meeting - and the full zoom link is also posted on the Bogleheads Calendar of Events.

Many thanks to the Pre/Early Retirement Life Stage Chapter Coordinators for coordinating this meeting :happy

Re: Taylor's 99th Birthday Zoom Party! - Thur Jan 26, 2023- 8:00 pm ET

Post by Miriam2 »

Hello South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

Our next zoom meeting is Thur Jan. 26, 2023, from 8:00 pm-10:00 pm ET

We are celebrating Taylor Larimore's 99th Birthday :D Taylor turns 99 years young on Jan. 25, 2023!

This past year at the 2022 Bogleheads Conference, Taylor received the First Award into the Bogleheads Hall of Fame, presented by Jack Bogle's son, Andrew Bogle. Taylor was the inspiration creating the Bogleheads in 1998, then called the Vanguard Diehards on Morningstar, as a personal finance forum discussing the investing philosophy of Jack Bogle. All along, Taylor has set the tone of decent and intelligent discussion and personal help. Jack Bogle called Taylor "The King of the Bogleheads." 8-)

Please join us, along with Bogleheads from around the country and Canada, in wishing him a happy birthday and honoring his many accomplishments.

RSVP for the meeting and submit questions for Taylor HERE. All responses are anonymous, reservations are helpful but not required to attend.

The zoom link is HERE and the full zoom link is posted on the Bogleheads Calendar of Events.

Questions? Please email SFLBogleheads@gmail.com or PM me.

Looking forward to seeing everyone and enjoying this very, very special gathering :happy

Post by Miriam2 »

Hello South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

We're delighted the next Bogleheads zoom meeting is "An Evening with Mel Lindauer" :D hosted by the Bogleheads "Retired Life Stage Chapter" on Sunday April 30, 2023, from 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET.

Image

Mel has been, along with Taylor Larimore, the guiding force of the Bogleheads since 1998, leading first the Vanguard Diehards, and now the Bogleheads forum, where he and Taylor have combined to contribute well over an incredible 85,000 posts helping small investors learn the Boglehead way to invest with Jack Bogle's investing philosophy. Jack Bogle dubbed Mel "the Prince of the Bogleheads," and a true prince he is: always willing to help others with their personal financial questions.

Mel will share his Bogleheads perspectives and there will be ample time for everyone to ask questions and discuss financial topics. The meeting will not be recorded.

We'll ask him about Mel's Unloved Midcaps :D

The Zoom link is posted on the BH Calendar of Events. If you have difficulty with the zoom link, please PM me or email me at SFLBogleheads@gmail.com

🌴 8-) Reminder for the next Bogleheads zoom meeting "An Evening with Mel Lindauer" hosted by the Bogleheads "Retired Life Stage Chapter" tonight, Sunday April 30, 2023, from 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET.

See above threads for details about Mel and his contribution to this great forum :beer He's had plenty of experience running his own business, retiring to Florida, taking on responsibilities for the Vanguard Diehards and Bogleheads forums, coordinated the Bogleheads Conferences for years, writes on financial topics - basically he knows A LOT about personal finance and is a great person to bounce ideas and ask Qs.

Mel will share his Bogleheads perspectives and there will be ample time for everyone to ask questions and discuss financial topics. The meeting will not be recorded.

Here is the zoom link and the complete zoom link is also posted on the BH Calendar of Events.

Spring cleaning - may be a good idea to make sure you have the latest Zoom update for your platform... https://zoom.us/download. Please let me know if you have Qs on this. I simply open my zoom icon on my desktop or laptop (not the same as joining zoom for a meeting), click on my profile image upper right, pull the dropdown menu and click "check for updates." Remember we're called the Zoom Client. If you have an iPhone or Android - my understanding is there is no update option because they automatically update. I know nothing about Macs

Looking forward to having everyone join us for this interesting and fun meeting :D

Hi South Florida Bogleheads 🌴 8-)

"A portfolio is not the only component to retirement readiness."

The Bogleheads Pre-Retirement/Early Retirement Life Stage Chapter invites everyone thinking about retirement or in retirement to their next zoom meeting "What Are You Going To Do Once You Retire?" on Wed July 12, 2023, at 8:00 pm ET 8-)

Participants are encouraged to share their retirement goals, ambitions, and any specific projects they intend to pursue. Whether you're planning to travel the world, engage in volunteer work, start a new business, or simply relax and enjoy leisurely pursuits, this is the perfect opportunity to exchange ideas and gain inspiration from fellow Bogleheads who are also embarking on this exciting journey. Or you can simply come and enjoy hearing what others have to say :happy

If you're finding it difficult to adjust to the idea of retirement or if you're unsure about what you will do during this new life stage, you're not alone. Always helpful to learn how others handle this 8-)

Here is the RSVP form - and if you have specific topics or questions you would like to have addressed during the meeting, please include them in the RSVP response. All responses are anonymous and it's not necessary to RSVP to come.

There also will be ample time at the meeting (either out loud or in the chat) to ask Qs or describe your good and bad experiences, what worked and what didn't. The meeting will be recorded in an audio-only format to promote ease of communication, anonymity, and participation. You'll be able to listen to the recording at any time, such as while you're out for a walk, exercising, or just plain relaxing.

If you would like to speak in more detail at the meeting, please contact the meeting organizer HoosierJim by PM or email him at ChicagoVirtualBogleheads@gmail.com (email preferred).

Here is the Zoom link - and the full zoom link is also posted on the Bogleheads Calendar of Events.

This discussion promises to be both insightful and inspiring as we share our aspirations, plans, and dreams for the next chapter of our lives :D
