NC DV property tax exemption

Post by weimfan »

Good afternoon everyone!

My wife and I are trying to file for a NC property tax exclusion and running into some issues. We moved into the house in February of this year and have been NC residents since last year in June. As far as we are aware, the three options listed below are the only property exclusions/exemptions allowed for residential property in NC.

1) Elderly property tax homestead exclusion
2) Disabled property tax homestead exclusion
3) Disabled Veteran property tax homestead exclusion

We are attempting to apply for the third option, but both times we have discussed with the taxing authority their answers to why we cannot apply currently are different. This is why I was hoping the smart people of this forum might be able to help. The first response we were told is that we had to wait a year from the date of purchase in order to apply, and the second time the reason was given that since we did not buy the house in the proceeding year we are ineligible until 2024.

I have also called the NCDMVA who had conflicting information, as the first person I spoke to mentioned they had never heard about a 1 year rule, but spoke to a colleague in the same conversation and they stated that it was true. The lack of similar responses leads me to believe that no one is 100% sure. Overall this would save us about $400 after being prorated for the year, so enough to buy a few knick knacks around the house.

To me it seems like we are eligible, but with so many conflicting responses its hard to know for certain. One of us is classified as Totally and Permanently Disabled by the VA so we do meet that requirement. If there is something I missed, please let me know and thanks for all the help!
