Very sorry to hear this. He selflessly contributed to a much greater understanding of, among other things, behavioral aspects of down markets and did it with grace, good will and humility.

He will live on in our memories and actions. Best to his family.

So sorry to read this.

Sheepdog was genuine, and on a virtual forum and with complicated financial topics, his posts put the reality into the BH philosophy and methods for me just starting out.

Well done, good and faithful servant.

Per CDC: US life expectancy declined 1.5 years in 2020 - www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php? ... 5#p6398912

... snip ...
This is true, but the 1.5 years doesn't mean what most people think it does.

What is means is that IF someone lived their entire life experiencing the mortality rates in 2020 then that person would have a life expectancy about 1.5 years less than someone who lived their entire life experiencing 2019 mortality rates.

But no one is going to do this.

And the 2022 mortality rates are likely to be back to "normal."

2020 probably cost the average American about one - two weeks of life expectancy. Meaning that the average American alive in 2020 will die about one - two weeks earlier than they would have if Covid hadn't arrived. Same for 2021; another one to two weeks.

That is all.

And the distribution is very skewed. A higher percentage elderly people than young people died, but the 'expected years of life' lost by the individual young people was more (because young people have higher life expectencies).

So ... yes, 1.5 years. But with a huge caveat on what that actually means.

Sorry to have heard this news.

Jim was an expert in driveway sealing from his past career in paint manufacturing which he freely shared with the forum and with me via private message. In addition, he was a valued member of the forum, his 2008 post is a well known and read thread. He signed off his posts with Woof Woof!

He will be missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

He lived how a lot of us aspire to with a long and fruitful retirement. Happy for him to have that. He was married for quite a long time as well. I hope his family and friends heal from this loss as best anyone can.

If my memory is still good, he posted many times his actual withdraw rates and balances several times, I though that was very helpful for many people.

RIP.

Rest in peace, Sheepdog

I remember reading his I can't believe I am thinking this [Panic and Survival 2008-09] post and it helped me greatly during that time. He seemed genuinely kind and wrote from the heart. He will be missed.

Miriam, thank you so much for letting us know that the Bogleheads have lost a very special member. I hope he realized what his kind and wise words about investing and aging meant to all of us of all ages.

Thank you, Sheepdog.

ResearchMed wrote: Mon Nov 28, 2022 11:28 am I strongly agree with removing the obituary, or at the least, editing it in a fresh text copy to eliminate most of the personal, possibly identifying details. Many of those details would be those that the person purposefully did not include in his posts. Deleting those would pretty much obviate much of the reason to want to share the full obituary listing.
If it were posted with redactions it would be very easy to find the source online by searching for the unredacted text, thereby exposing the private information that was redacted.

He produced thoughtful, cogent, practical posts.

May the loss his family feels be filled with remembered joy of their times with Sheepdog.

Sheepdog's avatar always put a smile on my face. Will miss your contributions.

I was just starting to invest (started very late -- approaching almost 40). Very turbulent times as can be seen in that thread from 2008.

One of his posts from around that time.
As I bring this thread back from the dead, I think...I did not sell some of my holdings at the low, after all...my years of savings keep going lower and lower and lower in perceived value.
Retirement can be stressful.....but fun. Okay, I've gone over the cliff.....
No, I'm foolishly not selling any more for at least 3 years....
Sigh......
I can sleep soundly tonight. I hope you will as well.

This thread:

I can't believe I am thinking this [Panic and Survival 2008-09] viewtopic.php?p=297409#p297409

kept me from doing anything stupid. I kept reading it and ignoring the what was happening in the market. My weekly contributions continued and it all worked out okay. Only because of Sheepdog. He will be missed
