US taxation of Australian company "distributions" question

Post by wokkawokkawokka »

Im a US citizen / resident with Australian equity holdings (not recommended to others) due to previous residence there and partner's citizenship.

Some companies give "distributions" on a periodic basis (like dividends). In looking at the company information about them, some of these distributions are capital gains and sometimes there are percentages provided of the distributions that are capital gains.

In reporting and determining the US taxation for these, does anyone know any way or evidence based assumption that have seen that would allow the determining of whether those gains are long term or short term? Information about this is not provided in the company information.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
