eFiled 12 March
CA underpayment e-deducted 16 March (the day I specified; I could have put it off)
Federal refund e-deposited 21 March
I think it helps to have not changed much over the past 20 years. My situation is pretty simple, though I always have to wait for the 1099 foreign tax computations from US-based foreign funds every year, and for the 1099 QBI deduction the first year it was introduced (seems to not be a big deal now).

3/9 submitted Fed and State electronically through H&R Block
Fed Rejected (forgot the IRS assigned PIN), State on hold
3/9 re-submitted with PIN
3/9 Fed accepted
3/9 State accepted
Note, H&R Block charged twice for the state e-filing. I’ll need to check back that they only charge once when everything settles.
Edited to Add: H&R Block only charged once for the state filing. The second charge was just an authorization apparently. So all is well on that front.

3/18 or earlier State return processed
3/19 Fed Refund approved

Re: 2021 Refund Times
E-filed both March 10th, accepted right away.
Refund received after 10 days for Fed and 9 days for State.
I am envious of people who could file in January or February. For whatever reason our 1099-Divs always come out in the very last round. Although I know the totals already, I won’t know which dollar is qualified and which one is not until the forms arrive.

Re: 2021 Refund Times
• 03/04/22: return submitted and accepted (0 days)
• 03/21/22: "Where's my Refund" tool says "We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe" (17 days)
• 03/25/22: "Where's my Refund" tool says the same thing. But IRS account transcript says refund will be issued on 03/30 and it matches the return. (21 and 26 days, respectively)
I suspect my refund takes longer because my spouse and I both pay estimated taxes to our individual SSNs; perhaps it takes some time to transfer my spouse's payments to my primary account.
The transcript also indicates a notice issued with a date of 4/11; do they issue notices when paper I bonds are issued? Not sure what else it could be.

Re: 2021 Refund Times
Edit 3/26: the tool now shows the refund will be issued by 3/30 but they could not process the paper I bonds due to the bond amounts not being a multiple of $50, despite the refund matching the return. Oh well, I’ll just frontload/gift for next year. (The refund is a whole dollar, but my spouse and I made estimated tax payments that had cents but added to a whole number when combined, so maybe this threw it off). This is the second year in which they could not process the savings bongs; their programming seems quite rigid.czaj wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 11:29 am • 03/04/22: return submitted and accepted (0 days)

03/11/22 - efiled federal with TT including Form 1106B + efiled state on state website
03/22/22 - federal refund received at Fidelity
03/28/22 - I bonds received in US Mail (11 bonds in 11 envelopes) totaling $4,800, each denomination in serial number order. I trust the missing $200 bond is still to come.
Nothing from the state yet.

March 1 - Tax return accepted via Free File Fillable Forms
March 30 - Return processing is still delayed beyond the normal timeframe, per the IRS.
Has anyone else had similar waits? There's nothing too crazy in our returns. Additional SS tax between two jobs, backdoor Roths, overcontributed to a Coverdell ESA, and route capital gains.
Maybe it's just routine under-staffing?

Only difference for us this year vs past years is EV tax credit which is netting me a larger than normal return.

It took exactly three weeks for the IRS to pony up. I try very hard not to let my state owe me anything. They aren't good for it.

My return is pretty simple. All 1099 data and ACA premium subsidy data, just like in previous years including 2020.
Re: 2021 Refund Times
I owed money. Took 1 day for them to get an electronic withdrawal from my checking account
Re: 2021 Refund Times
I filed both fed & state returns around Feb 1st. My taxes are pretty simple, just a handful of 1099's essentially. Got my fed refund in 5 or 6 days. Didn't get my state (Oregon) refund till late Feb., even tho it was only for 35 bucks. In my experience the state has been quicker than the IRS in issuing refunds, but that wasn't the case this year.

Re: 2021 Refund Times
I received my State of Wisconsin refund within 2 weeks of filing.
My Federal return was filed and accepted on the same day as the state return, but I have yet to receive my Federal refund. That would make the Feds quite a bit slower than 2020.
I used FreeTaxUSA both years.

2/26 - e-Filed (FFFF)
2/27 - Accepted
....
4/1 - Still sitting in "Your tax return is still being processed."
We have a reasonably large refund this year (low 4 figures) due to the changes to the Dependent Care Tax Credit in 2021.
Anyone else sitting in limbo like this? I know this was common last year, but seeing less of it now and wondering if something is up.

Anyone submit for I Bonds but not have them issued? Any success following up with IRS?
12/2021 - Extra tax payments for bond refund
3/6 Efiled - Requested DD for small amount, and I-bonds for the rest at an even interval to meet the I-Bond requirement for $50 interval
3/31 - Full refund via DD
IRS Refund Status lookup states:
I suspect I am just out the opportunity to get the extra bonds here, can't imagine it being very effective to follow-up with the IRS on this since I have already received refund. I was making spend on 5% paypal and new CC signup bonus spend so the extra payments worked out favorably, but would have been nice to get the extra bonds.

I was interested to read this thread. I efiled Fed 2/28, was accepted right away and had my refund in 4 days. That was a record for me. I wondered if they even read it! However my return is pretty simple. I filed state the same time but only got my refund last Thursday. However I snail mailed it.

Re: 2021 Refund Times
How are you all getting refunds? Since I started having a taxable account I always owe. Are you deliberately overpaying? Something else I am missing?
Re: 2021 Refund Times
You're missing nothing. I envy your position as I do not wish to give the IRS interest free loans. I want to owe. My tax planning is not accurate, that's why I get a refund.
Re: 2021 Refund Times
Many folks (myself included) deliberately overpaid to score $5k in paper iBonds as part of our refund.

I had no taxes withheld because I am an early retiree. But due to changes to the ACA subsidy formula, and some unrelated technical issues with my ACA enrollment, I overpaid my premiums for a few months in 2021. That overpayment exceeded my tax bill so it got returned to me as a tax refund, something I chose not to roll into 2023 because it was so big. I mailed it in about 7 weeks ago and there is no sign it has been processed.

I’ll bump this question as it’s now close to tax time and it doesn’t appear I’ll see an update. I’m assuming I should just send the check for the amount I show that I owe?seekingbenchmark wrote: ↑Tue Mar 22, 2022 4:01 pm 1-27 - Filed using TurboTax

At some point after a couple of weeks the status changed to, “Still being processed…”. I owe five figures in taxes and had over 1000 transactions on my 8949 (filed prior to my 1040 arriving but they match), I imagine they will not have mine approved/finalized prior to 4/15. I opted to pay with a check, I’ll give it a couple more weeks but best to go ahead and send the check for the amount I show?

Re: 2021 Refund Times
Update and a caution. Don't repeat your mistakes. My mistake was having someone prepare our state and federal tax returns who didn't know what they were doing. Our state return was audited because of errors and took almost 2 months to be approved in order to get the refund. I had to send in all 1099's to the state enforcement division at their request. I called the state tax division using a source not provided in the letter before I sent the 1099's electronically to ensure it wasn't a scam.
The first indication that something was wrong was when the tax preparer, who owns her own business and was recommended to me said that we could only take the 500k capital gains exclusion on a home sale once every 7 years. I disagreed after explaining the law to her, but she tried to prove she was right by looking on the internet while we were sitting there. She said we owed an additional $31,500 in federal taxes rather than the $2,500 refund we received. She finally made some lame excuse and said we were getting a refund after looking alarmed at something she read online while we sat there.
When the state refund was late I called her and she said the state had accepted the return and that our refund had been approved. That was a couple of weeks before I got a letter from the state saying there were "discrepancies" in our return and that they were holding our refund until I sent in 1099's that agreed or disagreed with the ones they had received from our sources of income.
I guess that $100 tax preparation fee wasn't such a good deal after all.

Yes, absolutely, without delay.seekingbenchmark wrote: ↑Fri Apr 08, 2022 4:10 pmI’ll bump this question as it’s now close to tax time and it doesn’t appear I’ll see an update. I’m assuming I should just send the check for the amount I show that I owe?seekingbenchmark wrote: ↑Tue Mar 22, 2022 4:01 pm 1-27 - Filed using TurboTax
1-27 - Federal accepted (no state tax)
At some point after a couple of weeks the status changed to, “Still being processed…”. I owe five figures in taxes and had over 1000 transactions on my 8949 (filed prior to my 1040 arriving but they match), I imagine they will not have mine approved/finalized prior to 4/15. I opted to pay with a check, I’ll give it a couple more weeks but best to go ahead and send the check for the amount I show?

Re: 2021 Refund Times
Have appreciated everyone's input on this thread, especially as my situation has dragged on some. In case it happens to anyone else, wanted to mention the delay that has come up for me that I haven't seen noted in this thread yet.
(As with many others here, I upped my withholding, and made an estimated payment, so that I could receive the maximum $5K in I Bonds as the main part of the refund after never having bothered with this I bond refund before.)
My timeline (I e-filed via H&R Block software download):
1) Federal return submitted and accepted on 2/16.
Since then, on the IRS Refund Status page:
For the 1st ~3 weeks after that, I had What I assume is the normal screen with the 3 part bar near the top, that in my case showed the return at the 1st (received) stage.
After 3 weeks or so, the bar part went away and, as others here noted, the "We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe...." message appeared.
Now, for the last week or two, the message changed a little bit to "Your tax return is still being processed..."
2) Then, last Thursday (4/7), I received a snail mail notification from the IRS that they were worried the return I submitted might be a result of identity theft, and that I needed to either go online or call to answer some questions "to verify your identity before we process the income tax return...". (The generic letter code of the IRS letter is 5071C (https://www.irs.gov/individuals/underst ... c-or-6331c).)
I already had an ID.me account, so I went online that evening and hopefully resolved the issue. (If I remember correctly, they just ask a few questions, including AGI and refund on the return, control # on the IRS letter, etc..)
I thought I read somewhere it said that the normal expected 3 weeks wait for refund after receipt is when I should anticipate the refund after having resolved the 5071C issue. However, per the IRS page I linked to above about letter #5071C, it says "It will take up to 9 weeks to receive your refund or credit any overpayment to your account.". (I hope they're being conservative, and it doesn't take that long.)
A little frustrating that after having submitted 35-40 federal returns in my lifetime, it's the only one with a large anticipated refund that becomes the 1st one I can remember that will have had any noticeable delay.

I assume you are asking if she is an enrolled agent. Her website claims that she has all the current certifications that qualify her for tax preparation and accountancy, and that she has been in business since 1990. It doesn't identify what those certifications are however. I wonder how many of her other clients simply trusted her and wrote the check for underpayment of taxes.

Re: 2021 Refund Times
I'm not quite sure how to read the detail in bold ("$100 interval of refund balance"). What exactly did you request, and how? I merely requested that part of my refund be used to purchase $5000 in bonds, and that was end of story... but there was no opportunity to indicate interval amounts, or anything other than total.gotlost33 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 8:27 am Anyone submit for I Bonds but not have them issued? Any success following up with IRS?
12/2021 - Extra tax payments for bond refund
3/6 Efiled - Requested DD for small amount, and I-bonds for the rest at an even interval to meet the I-Bond requirement for $50 interval
3/31 - Full refund via DD
IRS Refund Status lookup states:Neither of these conditions appears to apply - I requested bonds at an even $100 interval of refund balance, and had no past due obligation supported by the fact that I got the full expected refund via DD.You requested that part or all of your refund be used for a US Savings Bond(s) purchase. However, we could not honor your request for the savings bond purchase due to one or more of the following reasons:
The bond amount you claimed was not in a multiple of $50 or it exceeded $5,000.
You owed a past due obligation to which we applied part or all of your refund.

Re: 2021 Refund Times
Then why does it say in the IRS website that 6 weeks is how long it should take? I did ask for direct deposit of the refund which should speed things up, though.samsoes wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 8:05 pmMailed paper return?
