For those interested, the Zoom link for our upcoming meeting with Mel Lindauer has been added to the above post, as well as the Calendar of Events.

The meeting will begin with Mel addressing a variety of topics, such as his “Unloved Mid-Caps", his investing history, lessons learned since he retired, and others. We'll follow with an open Q&A session. Although being hosted by the "Retired" Life Stage, we're sure Bogleheads of all "Life Stages" will be interested in joining us for this special evening.

Make sure to mark your calendar for your appropriate time zone!

Thank you LadyGeek for posting links during the meeting, and anonymizing the Chat, and also Raj, Robert, and Miriam for your assistance. Of course, special thanks to Mel Lindauer for graciously sharing his perspectives and answering all our questions. To encourage more candid discussion, we purposely did NOT record the meeting. However, the Chat comments and links reflect some of the topics discussed.

Oh dear. Priorities. Conflicts. I've wanted to listen to the Republican debates but they haven't been on over-the-air TV. Example: The first one on Fox was not on OTA Fox.
It's on normal network over-the-air NBC tonight, 11/8.
Always decisions.

The Chicago Bogleheads and the Pre-Retirement Life Stage Chapters are hosting a very informative online meeting on Medicare and the new Medicare rules with licensed Medicare agent, Lonnie Thibodeaux. This is the second time the Bogleheads have invited Lonnie to speak (the first meeting was on Oct. 29, 2022). He really knows Medicare and is very capable of explaining it and answering your Medicare and Medicare Advantage questions.

Time: Wed. Dec. 13, 2023 - 8:00 pm ET

Topics covered will include the different parts of Medicare, Medigap insurance, Medicare Advantage, what is and is not covered by Medicare & Medicare plans, Medicare eligibility, enrollment periods, deadlines for signing up and making changes, the costs of Medicare and IRMAA (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount).

The targeted audience is anyone who wants to learn about Medicare and this is particularly important for those approaching retirement. After Lonnie's presentation, the meeting will open for your questions. Questions will be taken live (you may keep your video off) or you can post them in the chat.

If you wish to submit your Qs ahead of the meeting, here is the Ask-Your-Question link. It's not necessary to rsvp for the meeting.

5 pm Pacific
6 pm Mountain
7 pm Central
8 pm Eastern

The Bogleheads Conference videos contain excellent presentations and roundtable discussions. To leaverage this wealth of material, we are going to discuss the video Bogleheads® Conference 2023 - Advice for Pre-Retirees and Retirees: A Roundtable Discussion

Viewing the video before the meeting is optional. Due to the span of all the topics, only the first 1/2 of the topics will be covered this Zoom call and the second apart will be open for discussion on 2/21/24. We will start with soliciting personal experiences with these topics. The meetings are open to all age groups - all are welcome. To avoid confusion, the zoom link for the meeting on 2/21 will be posted later or can be found in the calendar of events.

The discussion topics include:

  • The current environment for new retirees: mostly positive
  • Calculating retirement readiness, including probability-based analyses
  • How long-time savers can get comfortable with (see also 26:29)
  • Long-term care costs: self-funding vs insurance options
  • Consider giving to kids and grandkids earlier in their lives
  • Bonds vs. cash, and bond risks in general
  • Laddered individual bonds vs. bond funds
Topics for 2/21/24 zoom meeting:
  • Pre-retirees: traditional or Roth retirement contributions
  • Tax-efficient drawdown strategy
  • Pay off home mortgage before retirement?
  • Funded ratio tool for retirement readiness
  • Retirement contributions when one spouse is still working
  • Spend more now and also work longer?
  • How often to take distributions in retirement
  • Best DIY tools for retirement planning

Viewing the video before the meeting is optional. There is also a book which was part of a book signing at the Conference.

Jordan Grumet is the author of "Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life" which is available on Amazon and possibly via your Libby public library app.

Due to the span of all the topics, only the first 1/3 of the topics will be covered this Zoom call and the second and third part will be open for discussion on 3/21/24 and 4/3/2024. We will start with soliciting personal experiences with these topics. The meetings are open to all age groups - all are welcome. To avoid confusion, the zoom link for the second meeting and third meeting on 3/20 and 4/3 will be posted later or can be found in the calendar of events.

There is another interview you can watch with the White Coat Invester.

Targeted audience: Pre/Early Retirement and Retirement Life Stages (but others always welcome)
