I believe that he is alive and kicking. However, I miss his posts.
He is no longer a forum member, but he has been contributing to the wiki via our admin email. I make the edits on his behalf. Here's the list:
Each page has a "View history" tab so you can see which editor made the changes, along with a comment. You'll see my comments which contain "supplied by sscritic via email".

Update 3/27/2022: sscritic contributed an entirely new article: Social Security - computing a Primary Insurance Amount

Update 4/2/2022: See: Wiki - Medicare article overhaul
Thanks for doing this. sscritic's understanding of SS has been extremely helpful.
Too bad sscritic no longer posts here.

Has Anyone Heard from Sheepdog?

Post by Sandi_k »

[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek]

I was wondering how he was holding up in the current environment, given his epic 2008 thread - and when I looked, he hasn't posted for many months.

Anyone know what's up? I searched and didn't see any news in the community posts, and searching for Sheepdog in the past 6 months turns up pages and pages of posts....

Based on his posts he is approximately 89. Hopefully, he is still alive and well.

I shared his famous thread on Reddit just the other day.

Holocene posted again recently but still hasn’t told us about her coach class flight experience to Europe and how that all played out, since business class was authorized and her colleagues flew it on the same trip. That was a riveting thread with lessons for many of us about perceptions of waste and when one should and shouldn’t question an employer’s policy.

Similar issues have arisen at my workplace about taking regular amtrak regional v Acela when both are authorized.

Sort of like McArthur and the old soldier, old Bogleheads never die, they just fade away.

I have told a very few people about my blogging experience here at Bogleheads but not my family. If something happened to me, there would be almost no one to inform the forum. I suspect that most others here do the same thing.

When people stop posting here, most often it seems that they have found other things to do with their time due to busy lives and declining interest. Other times, there was conflict with others here. There are cases where people just passed away, if they were not well known or had other presence on the internet, no one would really ever know. Sadly, I think Sheepdog has passed. I really enjoyed reading his posts and got a big kick out of his avatar.

Maybe we would know where more people go and why they leave if they were allowed for them to talk about it. I could see not informing an Internet forum of a terminal illness, and sometimes people die suddenly, even the young.

I think it's been at least a year since his last post. . .

I did a Google search and pulled up a webpage dedicated to photography. Hard to know if the site has been maintained or updated.

Did a bit more checking, it appears that he has passed away. Won't say what I found or where I found it but it is the same person associated with the webpage. Checked a couple other places and I am pretty sure the dots all connect. So it looks like we have lost another Boglehead. Rest in peace Midareff, you will be missed here.

His last post here was on August 26, 2021.

Solid financial advice at that website, great start for personal finance newbies.

Skimmed through his lengthy LTC posts and bookmarked it for later review, lots of good info there.

He reports the details of his massive toilet paper purchase. I had seen mention of it previously, now I know all about it, complete with a photograph :D

I like saving money too, but 400 rolls?

Google search sent me to this thread. Thanks for posting this update. Sad to see that he left, but glad to see that he’s still writing.
This post is a work of fiction. Any similarity to real financial advice is purely coincidental.

Anyone hear anything from toofache32? I miss his pointed insight into the health insurance industry.

A few of us Bogleheads, including Marty, would correspond a lot via email and off the forum. A little over a year ago Marty went silent quickly.

Live life to the fullest!

Best.
