Ok. Did a search for this so as not to duplicate. Did the RnR HoF in Cleveland yesterday, and saw this video for the first time ever. As everyone else commented, Prince was absolutely masterful. It's plain that the ensemble knew that they were honoring one of the most important people in RnR history, and they were all on their game. Jeff Lynne's voice was perfect for this piece.

The song has run through my head all day today. Great, great stuff!

Thank you.

Great cover.

I'm listening to another group that has some Roma influence. Nothing like the spectacular jazz quartet above but does have an interesting mingling of influences.
Paris Combo rode the wave of the swing revival in the early 2000s with their mix of jazz, French traditional chanson, North African, punk and Roma influences fusing into a unique retro sound.

Paris Combo - Moi, mon âme, ma conscience

I was sad to hear that the lead singer died of cancer at age 54.

Yes I know, Patsy made it famous, she was great and it’s a great song from Willie Nelson. She recorded it in the summer of 1961 (I remember that summer). Thanks for the NPR background, I hadn’t heard that before.

Two of the Pet Shop Boy's collaboration with Dusty Springfield.

Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done To Deserve This (Official Video)

This second was produced for the 1989 film Scandal, an account of the Profumo affair, a famous British political scandal in 1963 which severely undermined confidence in the ruling Conservative Party government.

Dusty Springfield & Pet Shop Boys - Nothing has been proved (HD)

An odd subject for a song, but the overall mood is one of intrigue.

I've been revisiting some of Joe Jackson's music - Steppin' Out, It's Different for Girls, Is She Really Going Out with Him?, the Heaven and Hell album etc.etc. He's an amazing talent. Composes everything from Pop Rock to Jazz to Classical. Doesn't buy songs from other people. He has recorded 20 studio albums and received five Grammy Award nominations. Won a scholarship to study musical composition at London's Royal Academy of Music.

I liked all of Joe Jackson's early work. Haven't heard his classical stuff. On the surface, that seems too far over his skis. Sort of like Linda Rondstat morphing into...well, whatever she morphed into. But that's a speculatory comment without any factual basis. :)

Okay, someone made a video of "The Americans" scenes set to Twilight Zone by Golden Earrings. The music fits, though the clips are not representative at all of the series. It's like they took every violent scene and every night scene and stitched them together. Very misleading. "The Americans" actually has a lot of slow-burn drama, daytime scenes (!) in a very suburban Falls Church neighborhood, and family issues as well as spycraft. But in any case, seeing Philip and Elizabeth in their disguises will make any "Americans" fan nostalgic for the show. Fans of "Ozark" will notice "Ruth" in a couple of clips. :)

I wouldn't say there are any spoilers in the video, except possibly of the very minor kind.

There was a lot of good 80's music in the series for those who want to track it down.

Sleep Token - Take Me Back to Eden

Brand new album that came out a few days ago. Very interesting mix of metal, pop, r&b, and electronica. I've not heard anything quite like it and I'm planning on checking out the band's other albums.

Some of the songs are duds, but the ones that work are really good. Highlights for me are Ascensionism, The Summoning, and Rain.

Elis Regina & Tom Jobim - "Aguas de Março" - 1974

Bossa nova is not my favorite, but this is pretty catchy. As in, once you hear it, it's kind of hard to get out of your head haha.

Elis has also done a somewhat comedic duet with Rita Lee -- ElisDOCE DE PIMENTA Regina & Rita Lee - DOCE DE PIMENTA.

I hadn't realized Rita Lee was such a huge phenom but a lot of newspapers had long articles on her passing and referred to her as "the Brazilian Queen of Rock and Roll" and an "international star" that the world was mourning. Yeah, the latter is standard stuff, but still, I'd wager most Americans haven't heard of her. But she certainly had a long career sporting a wide variety of styles.

Seven Psalms by Paul Simon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANtntuD ... eL&index=1

There are seven "songs" as you might expect but they're all blended into one track.

Beautiful guitar playing and his voice is as good as always.

I noticed a few folk/blues/pop references at least music-wise.

Worth a listen, or 3 or 4 to take it all in.

No I hadn’t seen either of these two videos. Also I’d never heard of Elis Regina before, Tom Jobim I know (not personally!). It’s a catchy tune and I might like it even more if I could understand the Portuguese lyrics. I studied the language 25 years ago but never became proficient. I see she was pretty famous so I’m going to give her more of a listen. She unfortunately died quite young.

I agree most Americans know nothing of Rita Lee. I’d never heard of her either until about ten years ago when I first heard Os Mutantes. I enjoy her singing, she sang with a lot of joy and playfulness. They were popular during the military dictatorship in Brazil so they had some guts playing their music.

By the way Os Mutantes was recently, and maybe still is, touring North America, albeit with only one original member. They came to a city nearby but I wasn’t aware of it till I read the review! Anyway I don’t go to concerts anymore but I might’ve made an exception.

Now listening to Bernard Herrman: A Heart at Fire's Center on the Saturday Cinema program on Minnesota Classical Radio. I heard it live on Saturday but I missed some bits. Herrmann was a renowned film composer who worked closely with Alfred Hitchcock among others, writing scores for some of his most famous films. If you’re a movie fan you’d recognize his works. There’s a new biography out and the host interviews the author and plays selections of Herrmann’s music. Music can add so much to a film when done well.

Thanks for mentioning the above and I will check out the biography. Herrmann's music for Psycho and Vertigo still spooks me every time I hear it. It's surely what Hitchcock would have composed, yet entirely Herrmann's creation.

Yea, I had heard of Elis Regina during my self-described "Brazil Period" many years ago -- when I was trying to find the perfect samba rhythm. Not that she did samba (not that I know of), but she's always mentioned among Brazil's greats. I personally don't care for her music since it tends to be slow and lyrics-oriented and I'm more about rhythm and don't know Portuguese anyway. But I enjoyed seeing Regina and Lee having fun in that video clowning around and vamping, and if you turn off the video, the music isn't bad either. After seeing Regina's joyfulness I trooped on over to Wikipedia and was shocked at the circumstances of her death. Seems a lot of musical artists have tragic lives that we never know about until they're gone.

(BTW, I believe the premise of that duet is something about how couples finish each other's sentences. That's the reason for the increasingly quick back and forth until the point Jobim passes out. :) )

Rita Lee, on the other hand, seemed to be a surviver. She kept morphing into other things, expanding her talents and venues and was a charismatic personality throughout her life. I watched some of her videos with and without Os Mutantes and she was good in all of them.
By the way Os Mutantes was recently, and maybe still is, touring North America, albeit with only one original member.
Yep, I've seen that guitarist in videos from the sixties to the present. Apparently Lee was not on board with resurrecting Os Mutantes in modern times, but the guitarist keeps plugging on and there does seem to be a following.

Perhaps the sexiest female rock and roller ever, Tina Turner, has died.

Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock; November 26, 1939 – May 23, 2023), RIP.
