Bach is not a favorite of mine, but I enjoyed this. Do you hear what might be called jazz in in? I thought I did at times, so surfed online and found many references to Bach and jazz and also Beethoven.JAZZISCOOL wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 9:29 am J.S. Bach

Re: What are you listening to now
I don't hear jazz per se but I love JS Bach and this organ piece is a classic. Baroque is one of my favorites in the classical genre. In classical music, there is something called a "cadenza" that allows for some improvisation but I think that is a later period e.g. Beethoven.Fallible wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 1:12 pmBach is not a favorite of mine, but I enjoyed this. In modern times, there have been some jazz/classical fusion groups as well that blend both.

Thanks for this background. The cadenza is interesting and would seem a chance for the composer of classics to have a little fun improvising. And I've read of musicians who can't help but improvise - it just comes to them and off they go, to our enjoyment.JAZZISCOOL wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 1:58 pmI don't hear jazz per se but I love JS Bach and this organ piece is a classic. The recent death of country star Mickey Gilley reminded me of...Buddy Holly. A song Holly wrote and recorded, "True Love Ways," did well and was included in the film, The Buddy Holly Story,, but became popular again when Gilley sang it better (IMO). Holly wrote the sweet melody and lyrics for his wife, soon to be his widow. Here's Gilley's version:

Re: What are you listening to now
Yesterday while scraping and priming my pressure treated wood stairs, I put on one of my custom stations on LiveOne, formerly Slacker Radio. I don’t know why more people don’t listen to LiveOne because I really like it. I had my Beats Studio Buds on, I heard no scraping, road noise or lawnmowers, and in about 4 hours I never heard a song that I didn’t like. I set up the station years ago and have it playing old and unfamiliar songs. I have it set for 320kbps, pay $48 once a year, and along with Amazon HD music, that’s all I need for streaming music. Yesterday I heard: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Yardbirds, Joe Jackson, Cream, David Gilmore, The Smiths, Lou Reed, Los Straitjackets, Aimee Mann, The Kinks, The Sisters of Mercy, Smoking Joe Kubek, Son Seals, The Church, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, Elvis Costello, etc., etc.

Beautiful, haunting. It reminds me of Beethoven's 7th, the well-known Allegretto, the similar tempo and the way the harmony weaves in and out.Nicolas wrote: ↑Sat May 21, 2022 10:27 pm The Death of Åse from the Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46: II by Edvard Grieg, performed by Berlin Philharmonic. There are still a few clunkers on their second album, but I like it better than the first.

For about 90 minutes I've been listening to the Vanguard on hold music. I wish I knew more about music to analyze it. Some flute with some harp. Clarinet??? Once is a while it sounds like it is going in a church hymn direction. Very repetitive. Occasionally, gets blaringly loud and then calms down. Now acoustic guitar with the faintest hint of James Taylor Country Road. Overall there's a feeling of mildly pleasant purgatory
Oh! And some Bread. If a picture paints a thousand words...but then fades into something else that is sad and meandering.

You can use the Shazam app to identify the music. Just let Shazam listen to it briefly and likely it will provide an answer.Rodethe600 wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 3:11 pm For about 90 minutes I've been listening to the Vanguard on hold music. Nicolas -- awesome clip. So that's how you do it.
In addition to Dr. John, I know he was a major influence on Fats Domino and James Booker...and just about anyone from that New Orleans scene. Though I get the feeling that Professor Longhair was one of a kind and you can't quite capture his quirkiness, intensity, or just plain essence. It's just him being Professor Longhair. Went through a James Booker phase a while back. Haven't delved deep into Dr. John yet with the exception of Gris-Gris, which I like quite a bit.
