I bought Gris-Gris when it first came out and played it a lot as a teenager, then five decades went by and now I’ve been playing it again. Likewise with Babylon, his second LP. “The Lonesome Guitar Strangler" recording on that album is interesting. Of course Gris-Gris is the better of the two.Calhoon wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 8:44 am Nicolas -- awesome clip. So that's how you do it.
In addition to Dr. John, I know he was a major influence on Fats Domino and James Booker...and just about anyone from that New Orleans scene. Though I get the feeling that Professor Longhair was one of a kind and you can't quite capture his quirkiness, intensity, or just plain essence. It's just him being Professor Longhair. Went through a James Booker phase a while back. Haven't delved deep into Dr. John yet with the exception of Gris-Gris, which I like quite a bit.

Streaming pop music from the 60's/70's on Pandora, after attending the "Happy Together 2022" concert last night, which featured the Cowsills, Buckingham's, Vogues, Association, Turtles, and Gary Puckett. Many of the performers are the original group members, and the backing musicians were superb. That music is the perfect antidote for the trials and tribulations we "baby boomers" are dealing with nowadays!

I have a different album (2003?) by the Riga Chamber Choir AVE SOL featuring these two songs. I don't know the relationship between Ave Sol and Choir Sōla, but they sound extremely similar, as if Choir Sōla is using the same musical scores 16 years later. Nice to see Latvian choir tradition continuing though.

I attended a Boz Scaggs concert last night. Wow! He sounded fantastic and had a super tight seven piece band backing him. He played a nice mix of old and new material. The man will be 78 years old soon and is currently on a nationwide “Out of the Blues” tour. If you were/are a fan, I would recommend going.
You won’t believe how strong his voice is.

Re: What are you listening to now
Just watched, but the point was listening with visuals a performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto, with Itzak Perlman, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, with the Berlin Philharmonic.
They were both much younger. Fun to watch while listening.
Then DH found a small video of a snippet of Schubert's Trout Quintet with...
Perlman
Barenboim
Zukerman
DuPres
&
Mehta
This was at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, just before a concert, and they were fooling around as though it were some lazy afternoon. At one point, someone said something like, 'You DO know there are people out there waiting to hear us...?" or similar words. Big Grins on all of them, lots of laughter.
And this was immediately before they all went on stage!

Just finished listening to (and watching on TV) the Gala Concert celebrating Mozart's 250th birthday.
https://www.medici.tv/en/concerts/ricca ... s-salzburg
[I'm not 100% sure this is the specific anniversary program]
Excerpts from the program:
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in C major;
(Sinfonia concertante’ in E flat major for Violin, Viola and Orchestra - not included in video)
Symphony in D major [Haffner];
Motet ‘Exsultate jubilate’;
Arias and duets from “Le Nozze di Figaro”, “Don Giovanni” and others.
with Riccardo Muti conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
and Cecilia Bartoli, Thomas Hampson, Mitsuko Uchida,
(Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet - not included in video)
It ended with a very short choral piece from The Magic Flute.
The program, on 27 January, 2006, began at 6 CET, the time of Mozart's birth.
We'll be watching and listening to this again.

(I happen to think some of it might be frightening to little ones, but that's me...)
They have amazing "costumes" (that's not quite the right word for some of the characters!) and staging. It's worth seeing, including just adults.
I stumbled across it by accident channel surfing some years ago, and it wasn't obvious at first what I was watching, but it certainly capturned my curiosity.
So then we sat down for a proper viewing another time.
I'm not sure how it's available on TV, but it is (that's how we saw it).

Re: What are you listening to now
I have not seen the abbreviated version. For young children, the full version might run too long to keep their attention. It was 2:45 including a 25 minute intermission. Probably the most frightening was the Queen of the Night, but not any worse than the witch from Sleeping Beauty in some recent movies. There were tweens and teenagers in the audience and they seemed to enjoy the show. The actor who played Papageno was totally engaging and funny and probably appealed to the kids.ResearchMed wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 2:53 pmHave you seen the abbreviated version put on by the (NY) Metropolitan Opera, intended for families?Artful Dodger wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 2:45 pmMy wife and I went to a performance of The Magic Flute yesterday at the Opera Theater of St. Louis. Perhaps I shouldn't have used the term "abbreviated" in this context. It's an abbreviated version of The Magic Flute in general, not at all like what you would have seen, or any regular staging.Artful Dodger wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 3:28 pmResearchMed wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 2:53 pmHave you seen the abbreviated version put on by the (NY) Metropolitan Opera, intended for families?Artful Dodger wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 2:45 pmMy wife and I went to a performance of The Magic Flute yesterday at the Opera Theater of St. Louis. Given that it's supposedly for families (or at least in part??), I was surprised by a few short sections that probably could have been toned down slightly. Or maybe not...?
Do at least take a look. You might be captured, too, by the initial "views". It's quite a visual treat.
Note: I rarely like "modern" styling, so very briefly I was a bit put off, and then I was enchanted by it.

I’ve been doing light weight training to a song called Come Check This, by Fetish, which I discovered on the Harrah Brown Instagram site. She is a 63 year old health and lifestyle coach in Buckhead, GA to women over 50 and has a lot of free content. It’s not a bad song to exercise to. But skip the official video of the song.
I also listened to the Suze Orman podcast on inflation this morning.

I hadn’t heard this recording in fifty-two years. It’s better than I remembered. The drum solo is the best part.
Song of a Baker & Itchykoo Park — The Small Faces. They were a great band. Their concept album Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake was their best. All dead now except for one: Kenney Jones.
