What are you listening to now

I hesitate to post this on a thread of obviously well-informed music lovers, but it is clever, Alvin especially, and, well, it is Christmastime:

I never liked The Chipmunks but I’ve wondered what their singing voices sounded like at normal speed. Now, thanks to the magic of the internet, I know: https://youtu.be/rfD1ZL9rX7o and also https://youtu.be/HkybmLP-K3s. The second video is especially weird!Fallible wrote: ↑Tue Dec 13, 2022 2:42 pm I hesitate to post this on a thread of obviously well-informed music lovers, but it is clever, Alvin especially, and, well, it is Christmastime:

Re: What are you listening to now
"The Chipmunk Song" was the only one of theirs that I thought was fun, as the rest just tried to copy it. After the first, the show was over, IMO. Thanks for the videos; I hadn't wondered about normal speed or what it took to change the sound and it was interesting.Nicolas wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 12:03 pmI never liked The Chipmunks but I’ve wondered what their singing voices sounded like at normal speed. Jethro Tull Essentials on Apple Music.
Re: What are you listening to now
I quite agree. With the success of that first song they probably saw it as a license to print money so they kept cranking them out. You can’t blame them.Fallible wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 12:38 pm "The Chipmunk Song" was the only one of theirs that I thought was fun, as the rest just tried to copy it. One of my all-time favorite videos: wonderful tune, semi-autobiographical lyrics, nice photos of the guys as young kids, George's sweet little slide guitar, Roy Orbison's soaring voice and little smile during the "sweet smell of success" in the last verse:
"I've been uptight and made a mess
But I'll clean it up myself, I guess
Oh, the sweet smell of success
Handle me with care"
"Well, she was just seventeen, You Know What I Mean, and the way she looked... was way beyond compare."

And now The Firm, Radioactive (1980).
And today, 12/17, Queen and the Soldier and Straight Lines, both by Suzanne Vega.

Agreed. I’ve been listening to all the Wilburys music. Going through my Christmas playlist, I remembered these 2 very fine versions of traditional Christmas carols by the english boy choir Libera.

and "Once in Royal David's City":

Re: What are you listening to now
Thanks for sharing this as I had never heard it and, even though I did like 10cc a lot years ago (especially I’m Not in Love) I wasn’t aware that Godley and Creme were a working duo after 10cc. Next up on my YouTube feed was the Undertones covering This Strange Effect by Ray Davies.wabbott wrote: ↑Sat Dec 17, 2022 7:33 pm Since it came up on the TV show thread, I looked this one up. Godley and Creme - Cry
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uzkGNjsFCZ8
The Cry song led me down an extended Wikipedia rabbit hole as first I had to make sure that they were in 10cc as I thought. Then I knew that Graham Gouldman had written For Your Love and Heart Full of Soul, the Yardbirds hits, so I started reading about him. That led to reading about the songs themselves, etc.
So, I then had to listen to a few 10cc songs:

An album from Dorian called Gloria! Songs of Exaltation. Lets me hear some seasonal music without sounding like a shopping mall. And while I hate to say it, the Bernstein mass sounds better in arrangement.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Mannheim Steamroller. My two Christmas go-to's for my annual 2-3 days of listening to Christmas music.
Have seen TSO about a half-dozen times, but their latest tour schedules don't bring them near me any longer. What a loss! Terrific shows!

This was another one that I didn't know existed until recently (though I'm sure I must have heard it at some time in the past). What a cool song.
