What are you listening to now

Post by Artful Dodger »

I used to partipate in a wine board, and this swas one of their ongoing topics. I liked it as I sometimes got inspiration/ ideas about new or at least unfamiliar music that I could later seek out. Granted, it could be old artists or new artists. So for me, new music could simply be something I was unfamiliar with, not exposed to. I go all over the board, but I enjoy music, of many styles, and would definitely enjoy hearing from others about their favorite artists, recordings, albums, CDs, etc.

So feel free to post what you're listening to Right Now, or something that you like that was a recent listen that you'd like to share with the group.

So for me, right now, I'm listening to Miles Davis - Round About Midnight. This is a classic jazz album released in 1955.

The Nocturnes by Chopin is one of my favorites. I listen to his nocturnes frequently, they’re very calming. Also today I listened to Best of Beck by Jeff Beck.

Cool.

I pick up on a lot of “new to me” both new and old on YouTube. I was entranced by this band (Khruangbin) a few years ago. Still am.

https://youtu.be/q4xKvHANqjk

Sort of jazzy. Exotic. Their story is surprising.

Edit. About an hour ago I surprised DW by asking our Google Home to play Erik Satie

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (1969)

Amazing album, best listened to with noise canceling headphones in a dark room while lying down. :D

I listened to Limelight when I heard that Neil Peart died (drummer and lyricist of Rush).

Valentina Lisitsa's version of the Bach Sicilienne and one of those Chopin Nocturnes mentioned above

Jeff Beck Appearing Live this Week at Ronnie Scott's If there is any doubt that Beck is the greatest living Rock guitarist, this live performance recorded and videoed back in 2008 will erase it. I was never a fan of Beck until I stumbled across it on late night TV a few years ago. Since then, I've attended a few live performances and, incredibly, he keeps getting better at 70+ years of age. Here is a youtube link to one of the numbers called "Big Block"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdX6ly6ftUM

BTW, his backup band on this video is top notch. Tal Wilkenfeld on Bass, Jason Rebello, Keyboards and the amazing Vinnie Colaiuta on Drums.

Roxy Music - Avalon.

One of my favorites and an album I hadn’t revisited in a few years until I saw Knives Out. (A character dances to “More Than This.”)

I'm a huge Rush and Neil Peart fan who heard this news as it was breaking here in Canada. Canadian musicians don't usually get much coverage outside of Canada, so it was extremely rare to read coverage in Rolling Stone, The New York Times and The BBC to name a few.

YouTube has some great concert footage, for example https://youtu.be/LWRMOJQDiLU. What a drummer and what a drum kit. I've been revisiting Rush albums on Spotify and YouTube for most of the afternoon and evening, reconnecting with great music from my youth.

In the car I toggle back forth between: House of Hair (metal hair bands from the 80's and 90's), Ozzy's Bone Yard (on the heavier side) and CNBC (I know, I know)....At home, Latin music (wife from Honduras).

RIP Neil Peart....modern day warrior,,,,

As a drummer, I did bust out the Rush albums last night.

Lots of Miles Davis responses; I’ve really been into Ambrose Akinmusire recently. He’s an outstanding trumpet player. I have tickets to see him with Jack DeJohnette in March down in NYC.

These days I'm listening to a lot of so-called post rock. It's typically instrumental rock music with an ambient and melodic sound. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FlHCmEwRkw

At the moment, it is a Baroque piece of classical music. I am located north of Washington D.C and am lucky to pick up, with extreme clarity, both WETA (DC) and WBJC (Baltimore). WETA is more conservative and WBJC is more eclectic. Love them both!
Anybody in other parts of the Bogleheads world have comments about their Classical Music stations?

Same as usual: a playlist now approaching 2000 tracks (via Spotify & my ripped CDs) from a wide variety of mostly lesser known Americana singer-songwriters.

Currently playing as I type this: David Olney's Jerusalem Tomorrow.

Cookie Morenco's original "Blue Coast Collection" compilation (24/96 FLAC). All the tracks are available on YouTube (but divided)... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo3Afg3 ... h8IbgtbtPA

Vols. 2 and 3 are equally excellent, and she's about to release Vol. 4.

I listen to more live music than recorded music. One of the side effects of ushering all over town. Right now, it’s Beethoven’s 250th birthday. So...all Beethoven, all the time.

But maybe I’ll bust out some Miles after the concert tonight. Of course tonight’s concert is...Beethoven.

Music by Lalo Schifrin, Three Tangos for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra, very nice. I was watching an old movie last night and noticed that the score was by Schifrin, so that got me looking for more of his music.

I enjoy good music from all genres, especially jazz (Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Dexter Gordon), blues, salsa, baroque (Bach). Have been listening to Hank Williams, Sr. and a blues artist named Elmore James on Spotify. Also a great Venezuelan (Spanish) vocalist named Nella and the Kenny Wayne Shepherd band (blues).

I also enjoy listening to NPR's "Tiny Desk Concerts" where they showcase big names (e.g. Sting) along with lesser known artists of all genres. Really interesting for those who want to hear fresh, eclectic music. :happy

You have interesting tastes! I also agree with your take on the tiny desk series — they really produce a lot of little gems.

Here's an example I had on frequent rotation all last summer after I stumbled on the band elsewhere. The Tiny Desk Concert was just at the top of the search.
