Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
For those of you finding relief from a positive day like today, I wouldn’t get too excited.
FWIW, the S&P’s YTD trend remains strongly negative:
For the first 79 trading days of the year (not including today), the index’s daily performance is averaging down 7.48 points a day
For 46 of these 79 days, the index’s performance has been negative averaging a decline of 48.56 points
The remaining 43 days, which have all posted gains, have averaged an increase of 49.78 points
January - daily average decrease of 12.53 points
February - daily average decrease of 7.45 points
March - daily average increase of 6.80 points
April (as of the 26th) - daily average decrease of 20.89 points. 6 positive days with an average daily increase of 35.88 points compared to 11 negative days with an average daily decrease of 51.86 points.
Until this negative trend and the S&P 500, which is heavily and negatively impacted by tech’s negative performance, breaks out of this downward trading range (particularly April’s accelerated negative performance), it’s difficult for me to understand why people feel compelled to post to this thread and see stocks as “continuing to soar”.

If you pay attention to the mods' notes, this thread is for posting about "US stocks (increasing)" regardless of what's happening in actual markets. So, please, take your bearish comments to the "US stocks (decreasing)" thread.

Impressive how the Fed has steered us into a recession before even raising rates twice

We had a negative GDP first look this morning primarily caused by strength in imports and lower government spending. A lot of folks were expecting a zero instead we got a negative number.Marseille07 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 8:34 amWhere do you see a recession coming, and how are you attributing that to the Fed?

While at it, I don't see why equities are +1% on that either
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Probably because the market thinks the Fed won't tighten as aggressively if a recession is looming. The problem is, we still have inflationMarseille07 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 8:41 amThank you. Here is some info from the St. Louis Fed:
https://research.stlouisfed.org/publica ... affect-gdpThe typical textbook treatment of GDP is the expenditure approach, where spending is categorized into the following buckets: personal consumption expenditures (C); gross private investment (I); government purchases (G); and net exports (X – M), composed of exports (X) and imports (M). Textbooks often capture this in one relatively simple equation:
GDP = C + I + G + (X – M).

Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Yeah, I don't think we can really attribute this GDP data on the Fed. I mean we are talking about Q1 advanced estimate and the rate hike took place on March 15~16, i.e. almost the end of the quarter.

Can we start a new thread for elderwise's trades as well? I'm tired of hearing about them. Be nice to have a separate thread I can ignore.

Apparently so. Under that framework, stocks could drop by 90%, then go up by 1 cent, and posts in this thread would be acceptable.drg02b wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 11:58 amWe define time in nano-seconds, so at any point that the stock market is higher than any prior point, we can use this thread.willthrill81 wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 10:58 am Sorry guys, stocks ain't soaring.
