Be nice to meet up now that spring is in the air here and people are coming out of hibernation. How about meeting mid-April in Bellevue or thereabouts?
Perhaps if you are interested, respond to this thread and we can get a count after which we can decide dates+exact locations?

I'm interested. Depends on the exact date, we have spring break stuff scheduled.

Good point about Spring Break. If April doesn't work, then May likely should be fine

I’m also interested and on the east side. Is there anyone to organize? I am willing to organize something in the Bellevue area.

Just joined so I can post my interest. Looks like there are a handful of people who are interested in participating and a few like who are willing to help organize.

If folks are interested, we can meet at one of these places
a. Crossroads mall food court - loads of seating
b. Panera bread - usually free, if the timing is right.
c. Starbucks near Crossroads - they have a large covered patio at the back, we can hand out without being disruptive.

More suggestions are welcome. Sundays work best for me (around noon-ish?). Just to give folks a bit more time to plan and prepare.

How about Jul 9th? Respond, and I can work with you to help this get setup.

Sunday, June 9th would work for me. I'm okay with any of the locations near crossroads, Bellevue. I think Starbucks has large space for this group.
I can help in organizing as well.

How about Sunday 16th July, 2pm @ Starbucks 1350 156th Ave NE, Bellevue. I plan to hang around there for ~1-1.5 hours. They have a huge patio at the back.

Sounds like all you need is a new Local Chapter Coordinator. If anyone's interested in stepping up, just PM me, and I'll make it official.

It was nice to meet with a few fellow Bogleheads. For me it was impactful, I made some tweaks to my investment portfolio based on the discussion.

Let us pencil in the September meet.

Next one is - Sun, Sep 17, 2023, 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM (PST)
1350 156th Ave NE, Bellevue, Washington, US, 98007

It will be nice to hear about anything specific folks are doing "before the end of the year"? Any portfolio rebalancing, tax loss harvesting .. anything else?

Vivek has stepped up and agreed to be the new Local Chapter Coordinator for the Seattle Area Local Chapter.

He created a new email id (theseattlebogleheads@gmail.com for this purpose.

In addition to using the new email address, members can also use this thread to communicate with each other about planned/planning events.

Today's meeting was fantastic. I took some notes as a way to jog the memory of folks who joined, and to pique the interest of folks who were on the fence about joining.

Attendees (First letters of first names only :) ) - V, T, T, S, P, R, B, M, L, A

R, I know you were trying to remember the names in the correct order and A, you said you were bad with names (memory exercise for you).

Here were the Finance related topics we discussed:
  • Opportunity Zones: Offers 3 things, a - Temporary deferral of taxes on previously earned capital gains, Basis step-up of previously earned capital gains invested and Permanent exclusion of taxable income on new gains. - https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/briefin ... -they-work
  • Safe withdrawal rates and strategies - Splitting retirement savings into different buckets for safety and discretionary spending.
  • FDIC insurance limits and strategies for maximizing coverage
Besides Finance related topics, we veered into some of the heavy topics as well.
  • Importance of having "enough" saved
  • Planning for mental decline in retirement - keeping assets and finances simple and manageable
  • Finding the "sweet spot" between work and personal life
  • Regrets about not traveling and socializing more while younger
  • Balancing frugality with enjoying life during working years for a fulfilling retirement
  • Importance of considering post-retirement life early on
My personal take away was to rethink about my personal plan post-retirement. S said something that impacted me deeply, many-a-times folks tend to be super frugal early on to save for an amazing retirement. The advice was that, you should find a way to equalize your lifestyles pre and post retirement. That way you are not have a terrible time when you are younger just to have a lot of money during retirement.

Overall, The meetup was a success with valuable information and insights shared among attendees. We will figure out an RSVP system for next time around.

I think it will be Mar 10 or Mar 17th - stay tuned for updates.

Thanks for arranging the meeting, Vivek! (I'm "S"). I thought it was a really interesting discussion.

One thing to add:
For the mention of "SEPP" (Substantially Equal Periodic Payments), for withdrawing IRA money before age 59.5:

I mentioned the term but I would recommend that people use a Roth Ladder instead.

A Roth Ladder allows you to control how much you convert (and pay taxes on) each year, you can stop it at any time, and there's no risk of multi-year penalties. The downside is that you need to save money for the first five years of retirement in a taxable account, while you wait for the "ladder" to get started.
