I put the Halloween decorations up at the house and cabin this past week, so I am definitely in the spooky movie mood. Earlier this week I watched Dark Night of the Scarecrow (from 1981, I believe). I enjoyed it. Last night, I rewatched the original Halloween. It's still an all-timer, IMO.

Rear Window, on DVD, also available on Amazon Prime.
This is a 1954 Alfred Hitchcock mystery/thriller starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. A photographer is confined to his apartment because of injury, he spends his days watching his neighbors out his fear window.

This is the 2019 Mr Jones movie with James Norton and Peter Sarsgaard. Not other earlier movies with the same title.
History may not repeat itself, but it certainly rhymes. Today we see parallels to Peter Sarsgaard's incorrigible Walter Duranty.

I watched "Top Gun: Maverick" in the worst possible setting - on the seatback in front of me on an airplane. It was still a lot of fun and I enjoyed it.

Thanks for the reminder on 9/30. I just re-watched this. I forgot how intense it is, especially Robert DeNiro's character.LadyGeek wrote: ↑Sun Sep 11, 2022 7:21 am Taxi Driver on Netflix, rated R, Robert DeNiro, Jody Foster, Cybil Shepherd, Peter Boyle, 1976, crime / drama. A mentally unstable taxi driver gets upset about life in the inner city. This is a very good movie and won several awards.
As the plot unfolded, I was getting somewhat uncomfortable as the personality started to come out. The acting and directing did their job well.
Towards the end, the movie is eerily similar to the TV movies you see at one in the morning followed by station sign-off - overly dramatic with suspenseful music. I had several flashbacks remembering that.
Heads up: The last day to watch on Netflix is September 30.

A few people didn't seem to care for the extensive voice overs but I thought it was good. And it is based on the true story of Molly Bloom. Afterwards I was curious about how much it deviated from her actual story and it was pretty much dead on, much more so than many "based on a true story" movies.
Saw this on Netflix last night.
Sorkin's script is so engaging and fast-paced.
Chastain and Elba were terrific.

The Trouble With Harry, on Amazon Prime.
This is a1955 Alfred Hitchcock movie, starring John Forsythe and Shirley MacLaine. This is not as dark as most Alfred Hitchcock movies, more like a romantic comedy. In small town Vermont a man is found dead in the woods. Nobody cares that he has died, but everyone thinks that they may be responsible for killing him.

Excellent recommendation. We really enjoyed this film.PhoebeCoco wrote: ↑Sun Sep 11, 2022 9:15 am Jappeloup on Amazon Prime Video. True story of a French show jumper in the 70s and 80s. Jappeloup is the name of the horse. Very exciting and inspiring! Some of the show jumping was hard to watch because it seems incredible that horses actually jump as high as they do, with people riding them - the possibility of injury (or worse) is always there.
I found this movie because I was searching for "Daniel Auteuil"; he plays the father of the main character. Wonderful and French! Lots of smoking and wine.
Good, unobtrusive soundtrack of pop songs from the 70s and 80s. Brought back lots of memories, and some regrets. Why wasn't I spending the 70s and 80s doing something difficult and worthwhile?
Highly recommended.
Thank you!

Barbarian now playing in theaters.
Very scary (and funny) horror movie about an Airbnb house in Detroit that has a hidden tunnel in its basement... The less you know going into the film, the better as it has some real twists. It stars Georgina Campbell (from the Black Mirror episode "Hang the DJ") and Justin Long, really playing against type to wonderful effect. It most certainly earns its R rating so steer clear of it if you're put off by a little gore.

Not renowned for being a great movie on many levels, and some people really dislike it for its intensity, but I love the movie's presentation of the ideas of accountability and choosing action over rumination.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
For lighter fun movies I can watch with DW, we can usually be entertained by RomCon's that take place in Italy. I'll call them "Under the Tuscan Sun" type movies where the formula is single woman travel to Italy after break ups. It's pretty hard to disappoint us as we have been there a good number of times and enjoy the scenic shots set in Rome, Venice, the Amalfi Coast, Florence etc.
So I had 2 on my Netflix viewing list that we watched this week- "Love in the Villa" and "Love and Gelato". Unfortunately, "Love in the Villa" opened cute and somewhat clever but lost my interest halfway through when I realized the main characters were not very likable in my mind so I went to the basement to watch a random NFL game!
"Love and Gelato" takes place in Rome at many major sites and gets higher marks for the photography. The storyline holds to the "Under the Tuscan Sun" formula and while a bit "Hallmarky" was clearly a better flick to watch with the wife.

Combat Outpost Keating (COP Keating) was a lonely outpost in Northern Afghanistan. COP Keating was defended by 50 american soldiers(B Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61 Calvary Regiment) and was attacked by approx 300-400 Taliban fighters on Oct. 3, 2009. Needless to say the fighting was desperate and I found myself ducking as well as the actors, as rounds from all directions flew in the action sequences. Once the battle starts, things on the screen are very intense. 8 Americans were killed and as a measure of valor; 9 Silver Star, 1 Distinguished Service Cross and 2 Medals of Honor were awarded.
The characters who received the MOH awards were Sgt. Clint Romesha and Specialist Ty Carter and they are featured prominently in the movie. For those interested they are both featured in episodes of Netlix's series "Medal of Honor". Both amazingly survived and are interviewed in their respective episodes, The series is very well done and provides background informtation as COP Keating camp layout details can be confusing in the movie. Both movie and series are very straight forward and convey the courage exhibited and the loss of so many fine friends,
"The Outpost" was quite good. On Netflix.

Hail, Ceasar, on Netflix.
This movie is funny, almost slapstick.
In Hollywood in about 1956, a communist cell of script writers kidnaps a clueless, self-absorbed movie star for ransom, take him away to their hideaway in a plush Malibu beachhouse. The movie star is willing to go along with it and asks to have part of the ransom. Two sisters, local gossip columnists, are threatening to expose the past deeds movie star and another. A harried studio manager raises the ransom, and the ransom is delivered while dodging the two sisters.
Spoiler alert, the conclusion:
A seemingly stupid, inarticulate cowboy actor figures out who did it, and retrieves the movie star from his captivity in a plush Malibu beach house. The hapless communists meet a Russian sub surfaced in the waters off Malibu, but carelessly drop the ransom into the sea.

I recommend it, even though I know not everybody will like it. It is like a Norse saga, and presents almost more like a play than a movie. I liked it a lot, but it is a revenge tale, and I tend to like those.

Breaking starring John Boyega. True story of a man robbing a bank because the VA wouldn't give him his disability check. The story was compelling and Boyega was excellent in the role. For a fairly small cast, they all did a good job and I didn't know anything about the real story. Would recommend it.

The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) — David Bowie, Rip Torn
An alien must pose as a human being to save his dying planet, but a woman and the greed of other men create complications.
Except for the novelty of seeing David Bowie in action I found it a bore, and too long at 2-1/3 hours. Still glad I saw it though. If you like David Bowie see it. If not don’t bother. I streamed it on The Criterion Channel.

This is a movie I don't think I would have ever heard of if not for this thread. I liked it, but I can see why some would not. I thought some of the jokes were laugh-out-loud good (such as Raccacoonie ), but some jokes just didn't belong. The leads were all excellent with being rather out of their typical element (although James Hong was also funny in Big Trouble in Little China). I had no idea that was Jamie Lee Curtis until the credits rolled.RJC wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 8:54 amI did enjoy it because I tend to like weird, quirky movies. He clears his name by catching his initiator with the help of an insurance man, a beautiful young woman and her wealthy mother.

It starred William Powell and Carole Lombard. It is a screwball comedy in 1936. I found it interesting in that I was trying to guess what was so funny. I’ve ordered ARSENIC AND OLD LACE , THE THIN MAN, and the PHILADELPHIA STORY from the library. I would like to see some pre-HAYES act movies such as, THE REDHEAD, THE DIVORCEE and PUBLIC ENEMY 1 with James Cagney. We’ll be watching : THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT with Nicholas Cage and the Mandalorian , Pedro Pascal, and Tiffany Haddish tonight.

"Where the Crawdads Sing"
Excellent!!......DW coerced me into watching it. I was a bit reluctant to watch it only because the title sounds kind of weird.... but nevertheless,
it was outstanding!

I, too, had to be coerced and ended up enjoying it on a number of levels.fishandgolf wrote: ↑Thu Sep 22, 2022 9:29 am "Where the Crawdads Sing"
