Ocean's Eleven
(1960)

The rat pack and company plan a sophisticated heist to rob
five well known Las Vegas casinos by creating a power outage.
Enjoyable movie with the archetypal 1960s flavor and humor.
The ending is a true gem. Since the heist occurred on a New
Year's Eve it was the perfect movie for New Year's Eve 2022.

Liked bullitt didn’t love it.
Watching this is spinal tap for the first time (!). It’s good. Solid movie.
The in laws (peter falk Alan arkin) is fantastic. Classic 1970s buddy picture.
Also just saw the freshman with marlon Brando. Very good also.
Surprisingly I found the recent oceans 11 with Brad Pitt and Clooney better than the original.

Support the Girls (2018) on HBOMax

The general manager at a highway-side ''sports bar with curves" has her incurable optimism and faith, in her girls, her customers, and herself, tested over the course of a long, strange day.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6859352/

I thought it was pretty good. Like one review said it's like a slice of life glimpse into the world of running a Hooters type establishment and all the issues around that. Regina Hall was great.

Jurassic World Dominion, on Amazon Prime Video.

Totally unbelievable right from the beginning. I spent the entire movie admiring the special effects - the film makers did seamlessly integrate the fake dinosaurs with the real (I assume!) actors.

It dragged a bit in the middle. "Yet another surprise dinosaur attack", I thought, "ho hum." But I kept watching to the end.

It reminded me of No Time to Die, a movie with lots and lots of violence, lots of special effects, and not much else in terms of plot or character.

Sam Neill looks good for 75, I'll say that.

The Woman in the Window (1944) Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea, directed by Fritz Lang.

A college professor becomes infatuated with the oil portrait of a beautiful lady which leads to some distressing misadventures.

An excellent film noir. It kept my attention throughout. Recommended. Director Fritz Lang featured the same three main players in his next film, Scarlet Street (1945) which is next on my viewing list. I streamed it on The Criterion Channel.

Males me think of the 1944 Otto Preminger movie Laura with Dana Andrews (cop, not professor) and Gene Tierney (beautiful lady in a portrait). Noir mystery ensues.

To Die For - on Netflix DVD, reminded me a bit of American Psycho. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would plus it's an early film of Jaoquin Phoenix.

The Menu - on HBO Now. Didn't care for this one, in my opinion the weirdness started too way early into the film, there was no time for a gradual buildup and it took the air out of the middle and ending. Maybe I just didn't get it?

Boy Who Could Fly (HBO Max)

Basic premise is a high school girl falls for a special needs kid. This would never be made today.

To die for was fantastic. Must see. A lot of memorable shots. When she is talking to Joaquin Phoenix. When he is in the cranberry bog … great movie.

I also liked the menu. Definitely recommended but not great. To die for is fantastic. Most movies that come out now are lousy. The menu I thought was better than average and not like most movies where you regret spending g an hour and a half on it.

I agree with bengal22 that this is a weird movie. There was just enough plot twist to keep me watching. Then it got more weird and off the deep end near the end. Watched Jurassic World Dominion with the kids last night. I thought the last one was one of the worst movies I had ever seen, Dominion is worse. Within 2 minutes you know the entire plot and it's just as unrealistic as you would think a movie about modern humans living surrounded by dinosaurs would be.

I really hated it. My brother recommended it. It is certainly an odd movie but I found it extremely anti capitalist and it is self evident t that capitalism - not crony capitalism but free markets - is literally a miracle that brought sustenance to billions. Also David cross and Danny glover are in it in terms of actors no one knows! Also the main character has now been in several mainstream movies. Oh and I think armen hammer.

Broker (2022). Written, directed and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters). The movie deals with a number of difficult issues in a very compassionate manner. It's a fine film.

Bookmarked “The Broker Upperers” on Netflix and saved it for when I wanted some comedy. From the trailer, it’s easy to identify this movie as quirky and it does deliver on that point! Is is a bit vulgar and maybe sophomoric but DW had some laugh out loud moments and you have to be more than vulgar to get a laugh out of her. New Zealand humor is even different from Aussie humor. I will suggest it but it’s not everyone’s humor.

I liked the move and it could have been the "working class" office space. But it was too much sci-fi and it should have shown the union boss excess not just the business owners.

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody" - yesterday.

"Babylon" - today.

Loved both. I'm still a huge Whitney fan, and although the film glosses over - and over simplifies - some of her struggles, it moves at pace. Naomi Ackie was splendid as WH, even if she only sang some of the scat (selection) segments and the first song.

Babylon is epically splendiforous. It absolutely won't be some folks' cup of java. But it certainly was mine.

Sounds like you didn't have two kids who wanted to watch it all the way through. Don't worry, it got progressively more ridiculous. It's insane how bad some (dare I say most) recent movies are.

Hostiles on Hulu.

After Yellowstone, I needed more for my Western fix.

Christian Bale is excellent. Great scenery and acting.
Among the better modern Westerns. Along with 3:10 Yuma.

Reminds me that the tales of the “Old West” were truly ripe with hazard and violence.

I wanted something upbeat. So I watched --

Mama Mia, on DVD. This is a 2008 movie musical set on a Greek island starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Bransky, and Julie Walters. The daughter of a former rock star is getting married, and plots to find her father. Recommended.

Moon Over Miami, on DVD. This is is a 1941 movie musical set in Miami starring Betty Grable, Carole Landis, Robert Cummings, and Don Ameche. Two waitresses from a roadside hamburger stand in Texas plot to get millionaire husbands. Recommended.

Singing in the Rain, on DVD. This is a 1952 movie musical set in Hollywood during the transition from silent movies to talkies, starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Conner, and Jean Hagen. Recommended.

Scarlet Street (1945) Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea, directed by Fritz Lang

A middle-aged cashier in a dead marriage falls for a beautiful girl, but misrepresents himself to her, and she to him. Mayhem ensues.

Another great film noir from the famed director. Recommended.
We streamed it on The Criterion Channel.

I thought The Menu was ok. I appreciated the satire but I would have enjoyed it more if they didn't rely as much on shock value. I think they missed an opportunity to tell the story with more tongue in cheek creepy humor and fewer flat-out disturbing moments that defy belief.

Everything Everywhere All At Once - hmmm...really disjointed with bits of humor, but the humor kind of fell flat for me. The storyline wasn't that compelling, despite the message at the end.

I am usually fond of WAM's (Weird A** Movies) and spent a couple of career years driving all over Oakland as my sales assignment so I had to check it out. I sort of liked it in a creative way and have been around Telemarketing/ Inside Sales teams in support of my product line and I picked up a hint of Glen Gerry Glen Ross in it for a while... and then it turned all Sci Fi on me. I don't know how this movie got pitched to the investors! Interesting to me that Danny Glover has a bit role in it as well as I recently saw him in a similar bit role in "The Hiramaya Bridge" where he is sort of similar in character.
I'm going to go with I sorta liked it, but it is truly weird and I won't show it to my wife who I know would hate it.

"Denial" on Netflix with Rachel Weisz. Based on an actual case in English courts involving her, an author and outspoken Jewish activist regarding Auschwitz and an English historian who believes there was never a Holocaust. Surprised I missed this one before as the acting is terrific.

Rewatched RRR with my wife last night since she hadn't seen it. Still as amazing as the first time. The movie is simply an experience unlike anything else. Nice to see it getting some attention at the awards shows (not that those really mean anything but it brings wider audiences).

The Aviator on DVD, rated PG-13, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Alan Alda, 2004, biography / drama. A biography of Howard Hughes. Perhaps it is indeed a biography, but the acting and drama was very well done. It kept me interested the entire time. This movie won a ton of awards, I liked it.

"Narvik" on Netflix is a new Nordic Noir WWII film that would pair nicely with "The Kings Choice". Mostly subtitled but some english. Some of the same actors from other Norwegian series like "Occupied".
My cup of tea.

Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954, Japan)
Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955, Japan)
Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island (1956, Japan)

This is the famous samurai trilogy directed by Hiroshi Inagaki. If you like samurai films, and who doesn’t, look no further. The story is based on the real-life samurai Musashi Miyamoto and stars Tôshiro Mifune (as Musashi) and other actors including three who also starred with Mifune in Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece Seven Samurai. These films are eclipsed only by Kurosawa’s. They follow Musashi’s progression from a talented but inexperienced rōnin who through hardship and many battles and life-lessons became Japan’s most famous samurai (and the women who loved him!). They all have excellent color cinematography and beautiful scenery. We streamed them on The Criterion Channel.

I thought these movies were actually based on the novel, Musashi , written by Ejii Yoshikawa, a somewhat fictionalized account of the real Musashi? At any rate, I really enjoyed that book and the movies.

This is the famous samurai trilogy directed by Hiroshi Inagaki. If you like samurai films, and who doesn’t, look no further. The story is based on the real-life samurai Musashi Miyamoto and stars Tôshiro Mifune (as Musashi) and other actors including three who also starred with Mifune in Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece The Seven Samurai.
Yes, you’re right. I haven’t read the novel, perhaps I will. From Wikipedia:

The film is adapted from Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, originally released as a serial in the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, between 1935 and 1939. The novel is loosely based on the life of the famous Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.

The Volcano - Rescue from Whakaari - Netflix. A documentary about a volcano which sits on a little island of Whakarri, off the coast of New Zealand that erupted while tourists were there exploring. It contains live footage. They interview a few of the survivors, which include an American couple. Really incredible. Highly recommended.

Genius on Amazon Prime.

A 2016 film about the friendship/editor-author relationship between Maxwell Perkins (editor of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway, etc) and Thomas Wolfe.

Powerful story, scintillating script, excellent performances (Colin Firth as Perkins, Jude Law as Wolfe, also Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney). Recommended.

"My Name is Otto", Tom Hanks
Wife and I enjoyed it very much. Great subtle humor, based on a true story.

"The Bird Catcher" on Prime Video. 1940 Norway as the Germans try to install the "Quiesling" government. A Norwegian born teen who is Jewish hides as a boy in rural Norway trying to make it to Sweden. All in English, at times both tense and intense. Enjoyed it.

We had never seen it either, so we gave it a try.
Yes, charming, old-fashioned, escapism... just what was ordered!

Is the 70th anniversary edition special with something added?
We just saw the ancient version.

The 70th anniversary presentation was in a theater on the big screen. After the movie there was a short feature with Leonard Maltin talking about it. You didn't miss anything.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I would rate it as the best movie of the year. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed it especially as a character study and being very scenic. I think older men may appreciate the theme of a guy just wanting to be left alone. There is a plot element having fingers being cut off, gruesome but not too bloody, artistically handled well (for what it is). I think women may have a hard time finding much in the film to appreciate, it lacks substantial romantic elements.

Wow.

ETA: I guess I'll have to tell my wife that she achieved the difficult task of finding something in the film to appreciate, since it didn't have romantic elements.
I get the FI part but not the RE part of FIRE.
