Saw this too recently, free DVD from public library.sid hartha wrote: ↑Mon Dec 12, 2022 8:43 am We watched Everything Everywhere All at Once last night on a bluray from the library
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 American absurdist comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as "Daniels"). The plot centers on a Chinese-American immigrant (played by Michelle Yeoh) who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse.
I thought it was very creative, hilarious (laugh out loud funny), well acted, well directed, and quite entertaining overall.
I was hesitant based on the reviews on this board.
It was mixed for me: disjointed but some parts were downright hilarious and the premise was interesting. Better than expected.

"The Outfit" (2022), starring Mark Rylance as a former Savile Row tailor of bespoke suits who has unknown depths of life experiences.
https://www.amazon.com/Outfit-Mark-Ryla ... B09V536PRC
According to the NYT: "In this gangster exercise set in 1956 Chicago, Mark Rylance plays a tailor who has very large scissors and some sharp moves."
It's a relatively small-ish movie, set in one location.
Recommended.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Most recent flick viewed on a theater screen: the December reissue of “Top Gun: Maverick”, kind of the ultimate popcorn movie/heroic flyboy pic, similar to “Wings” (Best Picture winner from 1927), “The Dawn Patrol”, and “Desperate Journey” (1942), and Howard Hawks’s “Air Force”.
Without giving plot away, I found the climax of “Top Gun” similar to … and just as preposterous… as the climax to “Desperate Journey”, though the two features are dissimilar in many other ways.
But all the pictures have macho, wise cracking military pilots in common.

Amsterdam (2022) on HBO Max
Amsterdam is a 2022 period comedy thriller film written, directed, and produced by David O. Russell. Led by Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, the film features an ensemble cast including Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe Saldaña, Mike Myers, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Taylor Swift, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alessandro Nivola, Rami Malek, and Robert De Niro.
I enjoyed it and thought it was a fun movie with a great cast.

The Menu, at Regal Cinema. Fandango describes it as "Comedy, Horror". The comedy party is the only reason DW was willing to go but it isn't remotely comedic. It is, however, very good.
The horror aspects aren't the stuff of Friday the 13th slasher movies. I recommend it.

A few that came though the library DVD queue that we've watched recently.
Top Gun, I think this is the best "blockbuster" movie I've seen in 3-4 years.
Everything Everywhere All At Once, neither DW or I liked this one, I couldn't get through it. I usually like "different films", but this one didn't do it for me.
Ambulance, heist movie, good for passing time if you're bored, liked it more than some other Michael Bay movies, there's nothing thought provoking about this movie.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, DW and I both liked this one
Nope, DW and I both liked this one

The Banshees of Inisherin on HBO was very good. Excellent cast, especially Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. It's funny, sad, and beautiful, all at once.

All Quiet on the Western Front - Netflix. Film about WW1, taken from the perspective of a young German and three of his friends. Brutal trench warfare. I didn't realize that many people died in WW1. Very good film, but not for the faint of heart.

"My Name is Vandetta" on Netflix, with sub tittles. Have found my suggested page algorithm is picking a lot of very violent recommendations lately!
I enjoy a good organized crime plot so I liked it, but it is pretty graphic. Pretty clever addition of Geo tracking methods baked into the plot.

I saw "The Case of the Howling Dog" on TCM. It's a 1934 movie starring Warren William and Mary Astor. It's the first Perry Mason movie. It had many of the flaws old b&w films had -- people moving around and speaking a little too fast, no character development, but it had an interesting plot twist that I didn't expect. I enjoyed it. It's only 74 minutes, so they really did cram a lot in!

Avatar: The Way of Water
(PG-13) Sci-Fi
Starring: Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana
I have to say the CGI was outstanding and that is unfortunately where it stops for me. I do not think this is considered a spoiler but to me the storyline was weak and similar to Avatar. Basically, let's take most of the plot from Avatar and add a few extras and some sea creatures and fight it out in the ocean. No doubt it will make a load of money but I was disappointed. Just a small side note, I am not sure why James Cameron seems to always pick the Marines as the antagonist, but maybe I’m being too judgemental. It has been over ten years since Avatar was released so for me maybe the novelty has just worn off.
It is a “3+ hour” movie so make sure you visit the restroom beforehand. I personally would have rather streamed this movie. On the plus side, I did have the whole theater to myself for a Friday matinee.

It's a really good dark comedy. It "isn't remotely comedic?" I think we must have watched different movies. Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
I agree with this review 100%, We saw it tonight at the theater. I was disappointed in what I felt was poor writing, odd character choices, and a recycled plot. There are some elements that are almost word for word taken from the original. Beautiful setting of course although the many explosions look like something from a Michael Bay film. I expected more from a James Cameron film. Some scenes were too dark like that infamous Game of Thrones season 8 episode. Our theater was pretty empty as well at a 7:35pm showing which surprised me for its opening weekend. I will not be purchasing this one for my library, which is sad considering that we saw the original Avatar twice in the theater and watch it at home 1-2 times per year.William4589 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 17, 2022 9:08 am Avatar: The Way of Water

Catch Me If You Can on Blu-ray DVD, rated PG-13, Leonardo DiCaprio,Tom Hanks, Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen, directed by Steven Spielberg, 2002, biography / crime / drama. An FBI agent becomes obsessed tracking down a con man. This was a fun and entertaining movie. It's a bit slow, but the drama builds. The somewhat financial theme will appeal to Bogleheads, not to mention that events seem to happen around Christmas time.
This movie won several awards. I liked it.

Based on comments here I went looking for Don't Look Up. We have a new TV that has google assistant built in. I held the button, said "play Don't Look Up on Netflix." It gave me choices of several trailers and one labelled full length movie with a pix above it with Leonardo, et al. I clicked and watched for a half hour or more and realized I had not seen Leo, Meryll or Jennifer. I re-searched directly in Netflix and easily got the correct movie. I gave it an hour more and went to bed! IMO, not worthy roles for any of the leads and too much story downtime. Not recommended.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
I liked Avatar 2. Before I went, I knew the story would be weak and the characters rather flat. But no matter. I didn't go into the theater for that -- I went for outstanding visual and 3D IMAX that I can't enjoy at home. And I was not disappointed.
Admittedly there are many cliche moments but even they are entertaining. I was like: ah this scene is similar to a scene in Jurassic Park or the Lord of the Rings, and this scene is just like the Titanic. I liked those moves, so these similar elements are kind of cute albeit old.

Desk Set 1957 with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Have seen it countless times because it’s one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Each year I try to spot something on the set that I never noticed before. This year I realized she has a bonsai in her office. Perhaps the Blue-ray disc I currently use has the full screen version that I missed all those years I watched it on TV or on VHS. My tradition goes back decades.
The plot is about how the computer will make the network research department become obsolete. Now we have Google and the “girls in the research department” have all been fired for sure.
Love it, love it, love it!
Merry Christmas Bogleheads.

"Captain Corelli's Mandolin" (2001) with Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz and John Hurt.
I knew going in that this film would be awful, but the book was terrific and I wanted a reminder of it which I read many years ago. But all it reminded me of is all the plots and characters that were missing. A book as broad and detailed and epic in nature as "Corelli's" should never have been made into a movie. Period. Anyway, a 2/10 for me, maybe a 3/10 for those who have not read the book.
The one saving grace for the non-readers is that it shows a tiny bit of history not necessarily well known: the Italian and German occupation of Greece. But the film focused mostly on the romance between Cage and Cruz (not a convincing one) with little coverage of the fighting or the unique characters in the coastal Greek village or on the front lines.

The Ring (1927, silent) Carl Brisson, Lillian Hall-Davis, directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Two boxers compete for the love of a woman.
This is a boring movie with a thin plot that runs for one and a half hours. Its value is that it showcases some of the great director’s filmmaking innovations and unique camera angles. It’s worth seeing just for that. And yes he does appear in cameo in this early film. We streamed it on The Criterion Channel.
