Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Watching the miniseries "John Adams" again despite gagging at the historical inaccuracies. The Boston Massacre trial scene is a travesty for example. (There were two trials, not one and as the trial of the soldiers - the Captain had a separate trial - the first trial in the colonies to be transcribed, we know exactly what happened and what was said.) On the other hand, I like the way they show how teeth decayed as he aged. Noting irritates me more on these historical movies than the perfect teeth or wigs that fit properly. (They were expensive and often ill fitted and were prone to slide off.)

There is a sequel, Enola Holmes 2 available on Netflix, in which she opens her own detective agency with just 1 client. A girl who works in a match factory asks Enola to help find her missing sister Sarah Chapman. A nice movie.LadyGeek wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 6:30 am Elona Holmes on Netflix, rated PG-13, Millie Bobbie Brown, 2020, Action / Adventure / Crime. The movie ends with a frictional retelling of the 1888 matchgirls' strike.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
We watched, again, The Contender, with Jeff Bridges, Joan Allen, and a terrific entire cast.
Something we had missed in previous viewings:
At the very start, there is a rendition of "Ring of Fire". It very obviously is *NOT* Johnny Cash.
This time, I really thought about it as it was playing... why was *that* version selected?
We watched the credits; we usually do, as there can be some surprises occasionally, or even a bit more to the film/story line.
And as the credits scrolled, something caught my eye. I wasn't sure I saw it right, so fortunately, we were able to back up bit.
Sure enough, that opening "Ring of Fire" is performed by none other than Jeff Bridges (and Kim Carnes).

Watched The Menu in the theater this weekend. It's part satire on foodie culture, part mystery, part horror thriller, and quite crazy overall. We really enjoyed it. It has an outstanding ensemble cast, led by Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy.

"Fugitive Pieces" on Prime Video. An emotional movie that follows a young orphaned Polish Jew through his survival during WWII through to his adulthood where becomes a writer yet still struggles with his social skills and complicated concept of self worth.
Based on a novel. I enjoyed it.

"The Bang Bang Club" on Prime Video. Based on a true story, it follows the violent years in South Africa from 1990 to 1994 when apartheid was ending.
Storyline develops around a group of both paid and free agent war photographers who take the photos that often go world wide that accompany the hard to comprehend stories being written by the newspaper reporters who write from the relative safety of a newspaper building.
This is not a feel good, rom com, date night movie. It is violent but the violence is a big part of the plot. It appealed to me as I have been to SA and also like photography... plenty of camera gear talk. It would also appeal to anyone who enjoys Newsroom story lines.

Rewatched Avatar on Disney+. Come for the visuals, stay for, well, the visuals. This is a spectacularly pretty bit of film making, The story and the acting are exactly as good as they need to be. Anything more would only get in the way.

Jurassic World: Dominion (2022)
Free DVD from public library.
Nice homage to the original in some of the scenes, plus the original cast with the new cast.
While obviously a money grab, not bad at all.
Can't believe it's almost 30 years since the original masterpiece and that soundtrack

The Man Who Invented Christmas
Free on Kanopy, but $3.99 on Amazon Prime. (Of course I watched the free version).
Dan Stevens (from Downton Abbey) stars as Charles Dickens, during the time he wrote A Christmas Carol. Very fun movie, with some high-powered stars: Christopher Plummer, wonderful as always as Ebenezer Scrooge, Jonathan Pryce as Dickens' father, an unexpectedly thin Simon Callow as the book's illustrator.
Could have been schmaltzy but is not at all.
Dickens spends a lot of time very realistically arguing with his characters; at one point he says, "I can't make my characters do what I want."
Luckily, the characters held out for a happy ending of A Christmas Carol.

A Game of pool, 1959 (classic twilight zone)
Pool champ is asked to come down from heaven and play yet another challenger. Inspired the Jackie Gleason role in The hustler (1961). Good commentary on the eternal and internal battle of the dissatisfied and restless as well as the jadedness of the champ.

You’ll be pleased to know that Detectorists is returning as a one-off 75 minute TV movie on the BBC to be aired during the “festive” season, actually between Christmas and New Years on the BBC. If you don’t have access to that channel a showing on Netflix can’t be far behind. https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/de ... ease-date/bertilak wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2017 10:12 pm OK, not a movie but a 13-episode British TV comedy: detectorists. (Lowercase is how they put it in the opening credits.)
A detectorist is someone who looks for lost treasures and/or archeological artifacts with a metal detector. The show centers around two friends (Andy and Lance) who are members of a small detectorist club.
This is the most gentile TV show (excepting Mr. Rogers!) I remember seeing. Try watching it right after something like Hawaii Five-O!
Andy is played by a well-known English actor, Mackenzie Crook who also writes and directs. You may know Crook from the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Game of Thrones and The Office (British version).
Lance is played by Toby Jones, another well-known English actor. He has been in The Hunger Games, Captain America, and Doctor Who, among others.
Believe it or not, Diana Rigg has a small part!
After the first episode I felt I'd seen enough, but something drew me back to it and now I love it. I'm up to episode 9 -- 4 more to go.
I say watch at least the first two episodes. You might get hooked.
It is available on Netflix.

The Moon-Spinners - Haley Mills, Peter McEnery, Eli Wallich. Crete scenery, intrigue, stolen jewels. One of Disney's better efforts. Like many 60s teenage boys, I was smitten with Haley Mills. I don't know quite why, as she was not a classic Hollywood beauty. Must have been her sense of adventure and her personality.

I don't usually disagree vehemently on movie choices, but this one I do! I had to sit through this with a family member and Hayley Mills' performance was the worst I can recall seeing in an actor. I don't recall the details, but the overall impression was screeching hysteria and super high excited voice or something like that. Pity because it took place in Crete and I don't like to see exotic movie locales wasted.wabbott wrote: ↑Sun Dec 04, 2022 12:20 pm The Moon-Spinners - Haley Mills, Peter McEnery, Eli Wallich. From what I've read, Mills was a child star and they were hoping to give her an adult role starting with this film. Epic fail! In my opinion, of course.

Last night we watched House of Gucci.
We enjoyed it much more than we expected to.
If you care about "who the actors are", you might want to get that list ready.
We didn't realize that there was some really surprising casting/acting, so after the first time we said, "Hey, is that <name>!?", we kept the list handy. Some of them were recognizable, but a few weren't.
I'm not familiar with the "true story", so I don't know how accurate the movie is.

Salma Hayek plays this character. In real life, she is married to François-Henri Pinault, who is CEO and Chairman of the French luxury group that now owns Gucci.

I never heard of this movie until you recommended it. I searched for it on my Amazon Firestick. I'm glad I did. The movie was a little slow in the beginning but that all changed about midway through it. Hitchcock set the standard for the 'Strangers on a Train' thrillers. Not a Hitchcock classic but it keeps you on the edge of your seat, at least for the latter stages of the movie. The train has sleeper cars, but you won't fall asleep watching it.VictoriaF wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 9:40 am Transsiberian on Kanopy (a free video service provided by a local library).

The Yearling (1946) Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman, Claude Jarmin, Jr., Chill Wills, directed by Clarence Brown
"The Yearling" is a classic coming-of-age story set in the Florida backwoods during the late 1800s. The film, released in 1946, is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. It stars Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman as Ezra and Orry Baxter, a couple struggling to raise their family on a small farm. The plot centers around their son Jody's relationship with a young deer he adopts and names "Flag".
The acting in "The Yearling" is top-notch, with Peck and Wyman delivering powerful performances as the loving but conflicted parents. Their chemistry is palpable, and they are able to convey the challenges and joys of raising a family in a harsh environment. The supporting cast is also strong, particularly Claude Jarman Jr. as Jody and Chill Wills as Buck Forrester.
The film's cinematography is stunning, capturing the beauty of the Florida wilderness and the ruggedness of the Baxter family's farm. The scenes featuring Flag the deer are especially poignant, and the filmmakers do a great job of making the animal a fully realized character.
Overall, "The Yearling" is a heartwarming and emotionally resonant tale of family, loss, and coming of age. It's a film that continues to hold up well over 70 years after its release, and is well worth a watch for fans of drama and coming-of-age stories.
My first viewing of this film. We watched it on PBS via over-the-air broadcast.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Modern Times (1936) Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, written and directed by Charles Chaplin
The film is a satirical take on the Industrial Revolution and the effect it had on the lives of everyday people.
Chaplin stars as the iconic Little Tramp (the character’s last appearance on film) who struggles to survive in a world filled with machines and factory work. The film is filled with Chaplin's signature physical comedy and pathos, as the Little Tramp tries to navigate the challenges of modern life.
One of the standout aspects of "Modern Times" is its commentary on the dehumanizing effects of industrialization. Chaplin deftly shows how the rapid pace of progress can leave people feeling lost and powerless.
Despite its serious themes, the film is also incredibly funny. Chaplin's physical comedy is on full display, and there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments throughout the film.
"Modern Times" is a must-see for fans of Chaplin's work.

Nice scenery and great Henry Mancini score.wabbott wrote: ↑Sun Dec 11, 2022 3:52 pmSo did I. One of my top 10 movies of all time. One of the few movies I splurged on and bought when it came out on CD. Hope y'all don't cancel my Boglehead credentials over that bit of extravagance.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
We watched Everything Everywhere All at Once last night on a bluray from the library
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 American absurdist comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as "Daniels"). The plot centers on a Chinese-American immigrant (played by Michelle Yeoh) who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse.
I thought it was very creative, hilarious (laugh out loud funny), well acted, well directed, and quite entertaining overall.

Zero Days was interesting... It's semi doco, semi guessing, semi made up... but some thought provoking discussion...

Top Gun: Maverick in UHD (Ultra HD), $5.99 rental on Amazon Prime, rated PG-13, Tom Cruise, 2022, action / drama. After 30 years, Maverick gets to train a bunch of inexperienced pilots for a hazardous mission. From the start of the movie, I was not impressed. The character interactions and dialog seemed overly dramatic and trite. After watching it a while, the other aspects - namely the flight scenery and lots of action changed my impression. By the end of the movie, I thought it was good entertainment.
I may have felt better if this was a $3.99 movie, but it was still worth watching.

+1
I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, especially Aubrey Plaza's performance.
I get the FI part but not the RE part of FIRE.

My wife and I visited my sister and her family yesterday to watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, as we do every December. We all pretty much have that movie memorized.

Don't Look Up, on Netflix.
This is a movie about how different people react to predictions that a large comet will soon crash into our planet, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Recommended.

It's on my list to watch. I think Amazon Prime has recently started offering it.
