Well, my final numbers for 2021 are in.

Born: 1977 (age 44), Single, no dependents.

2007: 145k (est), 53k SSA wages
2008: -15k (est), 60k SSA wages
2009: 15k (est), 73k SSA wages
2010: 75k (est), 74k SSA wages
2011: 90k (est), 73k SSA wages
2012: 132k, 63k SSA wages
2013: 191k, 67k SSA wages
2014: 198k, 74k SSA wages
2015: 261k, 74k SSA wages
2016: 306k, 76k SSA wages
2017: 409k, 79k gross wages
2018: 378k, 80k gross wages
2019: 481k, 83k gross wages
2020: 609k, 89k gross wages
2021: 754k, 93k gross wages

Cash: 48k
Taxable Brokerage: 38k
Retirement : 603k
Home: 64k (201k FMV, 137k mortgage)

At this point, I'm pretty comfortable with my retirement savings, but will be maxing out my 401k through 2022 just for added peace of mind. I am thinking of cutting back on the 401k and increasing my taxable investments starting in 2023, but I really hate that tax drag. My goal is to retire at age 55 with a paid-off home.

My first post on this thread, I believe. This thread is both impressive and pinch yourself, reality is not like this.

I’m not good at monitoring the numbers. When I do portfolio reviews here they help me tot things up. Age: 43 & 45. Income has been steady around $400K a year combined. Probably more this year, bonus was a bit better

I think DW and I are here:
2021: Roughly $5M. $2M home equity, $2M tax deferred, 800K taxable. 250k 529’s.

2020: SWAG - Roughly $4M. $1.5M home equity, $1.5M tax deferred, 750k taxable. 200K 529’s.

2020 - 23 - $75,800 - $89,200

I like the idea of tracking and updating here annually. I'm most inspired by the more "average-earner" progressions since I'm not in a high-paying career, but it's also nice to see the progression of the high earners.

* Graduated college in May 2019 and started first RN job in Oct 2019

Year - Age - Net Worth - Salary

2021 - 24 - $132,200 - $121,000*

* Estimate; quit my regular staff job in Sept, took a few weeks off and became a travel nurse in Oct; NW reflects $9,400 lost in 401k match not vested; so happy in southern CA as a travel nurse :D

jeremyl wrote: Fri Jan 01, 2021 7:12 am I just started tracking savings/net worth at the end of 2019. We have increased our investments/savings approximately 33% and our net worth about 39% in 2020.

I only started to learn about saving/investing in late 2014 (when I learned about this forum). We have gone from a negative net worth to just over a half million in the last 6 years. This is in large part to the help of people on this forum for helping me lobby for a better 403b and guidance on investing in index funds. Also, I have been able to pick up 2 summer school jobs that have helped increase income. Which is talked about on this forum for increasing wealth.

Saved approximately 60% of income this year.

Year NW Age Salary
2019 $425k 42 $92k
2020 $575k 43 $96k

Edited post to put the info in the above format.
Updating for 2021:

Year NW Age Salary
2019 $425k 42 $92k
2020 $575k 43 $96k
2021. $670k. 44. $102k (finally broke 6 figures as a teacher)

This year's net worth jump was greatly helped by selling our house in a great market. Saved 30% of income this year. 30% will probably be the saving rate going forward.

Best of luck to everyone in 22!

To close out the year we increased our net worth about 13%, looks this way:

1.1.21 — 3.8 million
1.1.22 — 4.3 million

Two reasons the increase is a bit lower than one could expect given the market. First, at 48 we are now about 35% bond funds. Second, my wife’s company stock, which she has acquired as RSUs over the last decade, underperformed for the first time in a very long time.

Make no mistake, I’ll take a 500K increase per year…that puts me over my target in just three years at 51.

Well done. Is the main driver of your growth contributions or investment returns?
I hadn’t really looked at it that way so not sure. I estimate 1/3 returns and 2/3 contributions. Have some work to do to figure out
I think my NW is tracking very, very similar to yours. Need your roadmap sir!

We are mostly a single income household, though DW has some business income in most years (not 2020 due to COVID and family expansion). Total HHI is currently ~240k. Figures below include investment accounts and emergency fund; home equity is not included.

July 1, 2018 - $95k
December 31, 2018 - $135k
December 31, 2019 - $262k
December 31, 2020 - $410k
December 31, 2021 - $558k

I am now 32, spouse 31 (funny how that happens...). I had a great year income-wise in 2021. We paid off a new car purchased in October 2020 and are currently undergoing a master bathroom remodel which we are paying for in cash. We are expecting our fourth child in February of this year. 2022 goals include more detailed budgeting and tracking of spending as I feel we should have been able to save more, but am overall still happy with our progress.

On to 2022!

I did have a lot of expenses this year. I also included a substantial income tax liability which I might have forgotten to add last year. This means that on an apples-to-apples basis, 2020 might have been high relative to 2021.

2007 - $73,389 (got married)
2008 - $124,013
2009 - $211,585 (child 1 born, became a one income family)
2010 - $264,388

2015 - $659,731
2016 - $812,277
2017 - $1,004,336

2018 - with both kids now in school maybe spouse will go back to work? time will tell.
2018 - $1,039,441 (better paying job)

Spouse did work some, but primarily stayed home still. I got a much better paying job, and invested the entire raise.
2019 - $2,039,003 (IPO)

The startup I work for had its IPO and we sold then reinvested all of the proceeds. Spouse primarily stayed home with the kids and didn't earn much. We are still renters. We use the 3-fund portfolio, 50/20/30 US stock/international stock/bonds.
2020 - $2,892,773

Tech RSUs kept vesting. Spouse stayed home with the kids which allowed me to focus on work since he was supervising them doing remote schooling. We are still renters. We still use the 3-fund portfolio, 50/20/30 US stock/international stock/bonds.
2021 - $4,313,264

Tech RSUs had a great year. Spouse started work again in the fall when the kids went back to in person school. We are still renters. We still use the 3-fund portfolio, 50/20/30 US stock/international stock/bonds. The plan is for me to take at least a year off (really this is a full retirement test) while he works. His pay doesn't cover our living expenses so we'd supplement with a portfolio withdrawal rate under 1%.
67/12/21 US stock/international stock/bonds. Bonds capped at 10x annual spending. Semi-retired as of 2022.

Ive lurked this thread over the past few years and have noticed the net worth's have skyrocketed!
A few years ago, the 3M cohort seemed rare, and now there appear to be more of these than ever.
Congrats to all!

Me - 40 - Her 38 - Very happy with our 3 year run (2019-2021) and very curious what the future market returns will be. Our combined income is rather modest for this board (235k).

Spectacular growth, especially considering the fact that you excluded another $1m from your NW number. Congrats!!!

Curious about 2008 financial crisis. Did you stay the course? What was your thought process? I started earning money in 2013 and I have yet to experience a huge (multiple year) drop in the stock market. I know it is better to stay the course ... but it is one thing to know and another to actually stay the course. Thanks!

Updating for 2020&2021. Single, age 48. I've really felt the power of compounding these last couple of years. I'm getting close to the 2-comma club, but I'll see how the market treats me this year.

I'll probably need to get to somewhere between $1.5-2.0MM before I call it quits if I want to be able to fund all my needs AND wants in retirement. I'm hoping I can get there by age 55!

sabresgrl06 wrote: Wed Dec 23, 2020 9:58 am This thread is inspiring but also daunting to see the wild successes. My path is more modest, hoping to be able to retire with around 800K to 1M...at least I have time to get there, am just 32 :)

2017: 6.5K
2018: 1.1K (had some major life changes, moving, had to dip into savings)
2019: 9.7K
2020: 23K (should be around this amount at years end)

I am hoping next year to hit 45K net worth.

Cheers to you all! :sharebeer
Well I didn't quite reach my goal, but managed to pay down some debts and cash flowed a car which was unplanned, so I am satisfied.

Updated for 2021:

2017: 6.5K - Age 29
2018: 1.1K (had some major life changes, moving, had to dip into savings) - Age 30
2019: 9.7K - Age 31
2020: 23K - Age 32
2021: 36K - Age 33

Goal for 2022 is 55k. Fingers crossed.

2014 - 36,000 (finished my PhD debt free, living in HCOL area, still making modest income)
2015 - 45,000
2016 - 60,000 (had some medical issues that set me back for a while, recovery impacted career performance/development)
2017 - 90,000
2018 - 115,000
2019 - 146,000 (got married, changed in jobs resulting in notable 20+% salary increase)
2020 - 270,000
2021 - 350,000
2022 - first child on the way, bought a new car, hoping to keep saving for a house purchase in 2023, tackling wife's student loans

Looking back on this and writing it down feels great, life is better when you are thoughtful and plan well :)
