Updating for 2020&2021. Single, age 48. I've really felt the power of compounding these last couple of years. I'm getting close to the 2-comma club, but I'll see how the market treats me this year.

I'll probably need to get to somewhere between $1.5-2.0MM before I call it quits if I want to be able to fund all my needs AND wants in retirement. I'm hoping I can get there by age 55!
12/31/2022 $903k I invested about $92k in 2022 and the NW fell almost $30k.
04/01/2023 $1005k

That last number was calculated just I turned 50, so I thought it was cool to hit two milestones at once!

Impressive networth growth in the last 10 years of working years. Is it from old school diversified index funds or concentrated holding in Tesla or similar?

Investing 40% of 380K per year(150K) and starting with 900k, it takes 10% per year return to make it. This is inline with index returns of 2010's decade.

It was from old school mutual fund investing—- partly diversified index funds at Vanguard and part actively managed mutual funds at Vanguard, Fidelity, and T.Rowe Price. No individual stocks. Automatic investing each month, going from my bank account to several mutual funds. And a self-directed retirement plan at T.Rowe Price. Asset allocation started at 80% equity funds and 20% bond funds to my current asset allocation of 60/40.

Your assessment is good. I didn’t have the time, interest, or energy to invest in individual stocks, and I didn’t want to pay an investment advisor to do it for me. Thanks to a favorable stock market, a high income, and a high rate of savings in the mature part of my career, I was able to watch my nest egg grow by seemingly doing nothing.

Retirement assets:
2014 - $60k
2015 - $50k
2016 - $110k
2017 - $140k
2018 - $190k
2019 - $205k YTD

NW including home equity is north of $300k. It's a grind, but I am so thankful for you all here at bogleheads. I am confident in my new trajectory.
Funny that I just thought of this thread, and it has been almost exactly a year since I posted. 2020 update:

2020 - $260k YTD

The housing market in my area shows no signs of slowing down, so that in combination with double mortgage payments has our total NW north of $450k. We are also on track to max out both our 401k contributions for the first time ever, assuming we maintain employment through this COVID-19. Gross income is right around $165k for the year.
2021 - $375k YTD

Luckily we both maintained employment through last year and maxed out our 401ks for the first time ever! Housing market is still on fire and continuing double mortgage payments, so total NW is well north of $650k. Gross income is right around $170k for the year.
2022 - $410k YTD

Let's hope that next year's update looks a little happier. We maxed out our 401ks for the second year in a row, and are on track to do it again in 2022. Housing market continues to grow, double mortgage payments continue, so total NW is well north of 800k. I changed jobs, wife continues to progress in her career, and gross income is now up around 230k.
2023 - $450k YTD

Lost out a bit on some 401k savings due to job changes on my part, and the market continues to be very flat. Additionally, the interest rates have significantly reduced our home value, so total NW is still close to 800k despite double mortgage payments. Started a new job in March of this year that I don't hate and it even came with a pay bump. Gross income is up to around 250k. The grind continues!

Progress since I left EJ and moved to Fidelity and became a Boglehead. This is only the investments/cash at Fidelity which is bulk of them.

6/19 $577k (left EJ)
6/20 $702, saved 83.5
6/21 $973, saved 98.5
6/22 $917, saved 86
Now $1,251, saved $114, plus $150 of excess cash that built up in business account that I transferred (s-corp draw).

We didn't start aggressively saving till about 7/17. Last of 3 kids graduated college 5/15 and then started paying down house which got paid off 7/17.

31/12/2020 - $715k - 46 yo. Bought a car with a loan

All in all a very good year, from a NW point of view. My goal is to retire a 55-56 if I'm lucky, before 60 max.
I wasn't supposed to update this thread until January, but I want to mark the milestone, as I hit the $1M mark yesterday. It's on very shaky legs, but it's there :)
Oh I forgot this thread even existed, thanks to whoever brought it back up. Weird how we don't want to share when the market is down :)

So here's my updates for 2021 and 2022:

31/12/2021 - $994k - Frustrating, much? The Million lasted all of one week, and was back a few times until 01/22, when it went away for good.
31/12/2022 - $856k - includes about $92k of new contributions (!)

And as of yesterday, The Million is back (barely) :sharebeer. Won't last long even if the market doesn't go down, as I will loan $25k to a family member on June 1st. Still, made me smile to see it (includes another $65k of new contributions YTD, so I'm still way down from 2021 (obviously)).

Happy to have hit the $3M Net worth of savings/investments today, without counting 0.5M of home equity.

Don't know how to celebrate.. It feels so surreal.

Just 6 years ago, at age 37, it was $1.1M and felt like I was struggling, but happy to see $3M now!

I guess aggressive savings $150K+/year, along with good market returns, pushed it over.

2006 - got divorced at age 36. Net worth - under 200k.

2010 - age 40 - making 180k. House under water. Net worth - 250k.

2015 - age 45 - making 250k. Net worth with home equity - 600k

2018 - age 48 - making 350k. Net worth with house - 1.2m

2020 - age 50 - making 380k. Inherited 300k. Net worth - 2m

2023 - age 53 - making 400k. Net worth - 2.8m. (Spouse has an additional 1.5m in retirement in her name).

A lot of good fortune including making a high salary and an unexpected 300k inheritance. But also maybe a hopeful lesson if you - like me - didn’t get the chance to build wealth until you were over 40, it can still grow fast.

Bill Perkins book is excellent, and I’d recommend it to anybody.

As to your question, I expect my net worth will rise basically until I die. So it probably will be highest at my demise.

Of course there are no guarantees, but if your portfolio withdrawl rate is low, this is what I’d expect……

Thanks for the post.
The point about an ever increasing net worth, is the question: is this the best utility of your money? If it’s not going to be spent by you, why not start giving it to heirs or charities that will get the money anyway. It will likely have more utility earlier, rather than later.

Btw, I am getting my head around this above. But it makes sense to me in general.

Finally started getting interested in finances in 2019 at the age of 33. Really started to buckle down in 2021. Late start.
Maxing 401k, Roth IRA, HSA, and putting excess into brokerage and HYSA (saving for new HVAC in near future). Goal is to save about 70k this year.
Have a 150k student loan at 0.75% and 210k mortgage at 3% dragging me down a bit. But in no rush to prepay.

9/2021 - 90k
12/2021 - 117k
6/2022 - 150k
12/2022 - 182k
6/2023. - 275k

43 years old and generally hovering around 80/20 with our investments.

Dec 2019: $1.46 mn
Dec 2020: $1.58 mn (Could’ve been more but took career break from June 2019-Nov 2020. Even with no income was still up year-over-year)

Dec 2022: $1.76 mn

So close, yet so far away from the $2mn mark …Something to aim for in 2023 ☺️

Happy new year all!

Hello all!

We crossed over $2mn at some point this week. I cannot shout this from the rooftops anyplace, so will just note it here anonymously. :-)

A huge contributor was the boglehead focus for the last 10 years or so, and some good advice pulled from this board.

Took 16 years to hit $1mn, and then another 6 to reach $2mn. Hopefully will get to $3mn even faster!

All the best.

This matches my experience as well, despite having half your income. I had a NW of ~$80k at age 40, with over half of that in home equity. I had ~$7,500 in my IRA and I had just started contributing to my 401k at the time. I got serious at around age 42 and saved at least 1/3 of my income that year and every year since. Now at age 50, NW has climbed to about $1MM (~10% of that from an inheritance).

Over that 40-50 decade, my expected retirement has gone from maybe someday --> I might be able to retire at 65 --> Pretty sure I can retire by 62 -- > Looking good for 55-58. I'm probably not far from a lean FIRE number right now if I really had to, so my continued investments are just adding to my discretionary expenses in retirement.

Mostly a long time lurker. Recently became a half-a-millionare for the second time, single at age 34, largely using what I have learned at Bogleheads to get me here.

Pretty happy with my progress as a dumb ex-Army grunt, who only finished community college, and spent most of my career afterwards busting my knuckles and working with my hands.

28 - 6/2018 - 130k
29 - 6/2019 - 210k
30 - 6/2020 - 290k
31 - 6/2021 - 425k
32 - 4/2022 - 558k (peak)
33 - 6/2022 - 495k
34 - 6/2023 - 553k (today)

361k - investment accounts
185k - home equity if I'm to believe zillow
7k - checking

I spent $150k on vehicles over the last 14 months, not very Boglehead-ish of me, I know. If I count them, I would be pushing $700k net, and technically I never dropped below $500k.

Literally nobody know any of this, feels strange telling people, even if it only here on the BH forum.

Been tracking in earnest since 2018. Would never share this with a friend or family but the world wide web ... :)

Below are only investments + cash. Salaries do not include bonuses as they are variable.

Aug 2018: $509K (His/Her Salary: $250K ages: 37/30)
Apr 2019: $616K (His/Her Salary: $255K ages: 38/31)
Feb 2020: $807K (His/Her Salary: $260K ages: 39/32)
Mar 2021: $1,219K (His/Her Salary: $267K ages: 40/33)
June 2022: $1,695K (His/Her Salary: $287K ages: 41/34)*
June 2023: $1,599K (His/Her Salary: $301K ages: 42/35)**

*New Job + Sold Home (Influx of cash)
**Equity in home ~$200K, 529K ~ $50K
** Rough Split: $100K Cash, $370K Investments, Remainder in 401k, IRA, Roth, HSA.

Reflecting a bit on the above, we have been MORE than fortunate and we are thankful for everything that we have - our health, our family and our resources/jobs.

Don't know how to celebrate.. It feels so surreal.

Just 6 years ago, at age 37, it was $1.1M and felt like I was struggling, but happy to see $3M now!

I guess aggressive savings $150K+/year, along with good market returns, pushed it over.

Net worth (M) Age
1.1 M 37
1.3 M 38
1.7 M 39
2.1 M 40
2.6 M 41
2.7 M 42
3.0 M 43
What a phenomenal progress!! Congrats 👏. Market was down in 2022. How did you manage to increase your NW? Real Estate?
In 2022, 2023, although the market went down, we kept saving and investing that helped. It was simply annual savings, and simple index funds, that delivered the growth. No real estate.

Just crossed 2 million in combined net worth. 1.85 of that is invested. Rest is equity in the home.

Being the higher earner, I brought in 1.45 of the net worth, spouse brought in 0.55.

Very modest income in 12% marginal rate - maxing out all tax advantaged accounts, both working. Spending about 50K now, 35K w/o mortgage.

Spouse planning on retiring in 3 years.

I haven't set my sight on a date yet. Long road ahead of us. One step at a time.

Grateful for where we are now.
Minor update. Me 42, DH 61 and retired.

Invested assets now $2.1 million. (The number starting with two for the invested assets feels special)

Networth $2.3 million.

Very modest income in 12% marginal rate - maxing out all tax advantaged accounts, only me working. Spending about 67K now, 51K w/o mortgage. I guess revenge spending post COVID is real.

2012 (Age 27) - $162k
2013 (Age 28) - $208k
2014 (Age 29) - $288k
2015 (Age 30) - $361k

Went from $1 million to $2 million in almost exactly three years of time. If this keeps up, we should easily be able to hit our target retirement number in the next 10 years!

We saved around $585k in taxable, 401(k)s, HSAs over those three years, with the vast majority of that coming in the past 18 months, due to moving cash out of our checking accounts, selling our starter house, and some land royalty income.

Investing the BH way since 2000.

Context
Spouse + 2 children (1 with special needs).
Pacific NW resident, so in a relatively HCOLA part of the U.S.
Single income household.
High income household (in the top 10% for my region & age consistently).

Progression
Y2000
- Net home equity = 0 (renting)
- Net worth excluding home equity = 1Y of family expenses.

Y2023
- Net home equity = 8 years of family expenses.
- Net worth excluding home equity = 25Y of family expenses.

December 2005 $604,000
Nov 2006 $760,000
May 2009 $873,000
December 2010 $1,150,000
Currently $4,700,000

I started work in the early 1990s but I don't have the numbers for our our early years of employment unfortunately. In addition to the above, we also have pensions and our house is paid off.

My wife and I have been working for almost thirty years in well-paid jobs, me in tech and wife in healthcare. However, we have also been low spenders. We have one modest house and two fully paid-for cars.
Currently $7,000,000

This is mainly due to the power of compounding, we are now benefiting from the investments we made thirty years ago. Still feels a bit unreal.

Awesome job. You’re crushing it.

At those numbers, further compounding will be amazing numbers. A 1% jump will get you 70K!

All the best!

You’re doing great. Getting to that level of networth takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and good fortune.

It’s a great accomplishment!

I've been semi retired for a bit over a year, but we just hit another high water mark in our net worth. In January 2022 we were at $4.31M, now we are at $4.35M, after some down times to be sure! We were down to $3.69M in October 2022. (Our net worth was still higher in January 2022 after I adjust for inflation, ah well.)
67/12/21 US stock/international stock/bonds. Bonds capped at 10x annual spending. Semi-retired as of 2022.

Although I joined this forum only a few years ago, our index fund investing was originally inspired by an interview with Jack Bogle on TV in the early 1990s. So that makes me an OG Boglehead I suppose :happy

This is household, Wife & I.

I started tracking numbers in 2017, before that I think I was just using Personal Capital.

I can tell you I graduated from a state school in 2013 and made 40K my first year. Wife got a better first job out of college and graduated a year before me at I believe 60K.

Total Household Income changes each year with bonus' and side business but averaging $300K+ at this point.

We have a young family now so that added pressure IMO to keep my foot on the gas.
