BOGLEHEADS on Facebook?

Post by SeeMoe »

I checked “ following” on the Facebook App for BOGLEHEADS, but when I tap menu it never appears for me. Am I doing something wrong?

Be careful. There are fake Boglehead Facebook pages. The real one has a “category” as “Interest”. A new fake one has “Investing Service”

This is the real one with 16k likes.

The Wiki contains the same link.

We have an actual Wiki page about it.

I expect that SeeMoe is looking at a new fake Bogleheads page which I have warned them about.

Try tapping Menu -> Groups -> Your Groups

The Boglehead page or any other page can’t control how Facebook presents it to you.

That’s not the official Bogleheads Facebook page. It’s just a scam page.

This is the link to the official Facebook page.

I don't (usually?) participate with Facebook, but I did just take a look for BH, using what is supposedly the "official Facebook page" (per above quoted post).

There is what appears to be a scam:

"Bogleheads
#AttentionBitcoinholders!
We are awarding 30 BTC Bonus to the community. Take this award now by sending from 0.05 - 7 BTC to the deposit address below and be rewarded with X3 of what you sent instantly to your wallet .
BTC Deposit Address⬇️
[redacted account number/BTC Deposit Address]
NOTE:This update is Valid untill we Remove it and you can send from any Exchange or wallet.
"

[emphasis added]

Or is the above link from the quoted post not accurate?

No idea why but when I go to the page I cannot see the scam posts.

Edit - I now see them in the comments under Jacks picture.

This site, bogleheads.org (the forum, wiki, and blog), is independent from Facebook and Reddit. We have no connection other than use of the Bogleheads name.*

The Facebook link is in the wiki's sidebar (desktop view): Bogleheads | Facebook

Can someone with a Facebook account post there (or report the post) regarding the spam?

I don't do Facebook or Reddit. However, I did notify the Bogle Center.

I'm not sure if all these comments were here before, but this is what I'm seeing now.

I've reported all of them. I reported "We are awarding 30 BTC Bonus to the community" three times: as "false information," as "spam," and as "unauthorized sales." I reported all the rest simply as "spam." Unlike the Bogleheads' forum, I don't expect Facebook to do much, but at least I've reported them.

Unfortunately the page isn’t set up with admins/moderators. Any report made simply goes to Facebook itself as you noted. That will likely result in nothing happening.

As I said, I reported all of the spam posts to Facebook. The main one urged people to send bitcoin to a particular wallet and promised that you would immediately get back 3X what you sent. There were eight replies, all similar, from delighted users saying that it had worked for them.

I now have my official reply from Facebook:
Your report

To keep our review process as fair as possible, we use the same set of Community Standards to review all reports.

We've taken a look and found that this content doesn't go against our Community Standards.
Just so you know.

Thank you, Jon Luskin or whomever it was who removed these posts anyway.

It's mind-blowing how the ability to filter, approve, etc., comments is disappointingly limited. Not just Facebook, but Twitter. As such, the scammers are out in force.

Be careful out there, folks.
