Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
Hello All,
I have what I think is a fairly simple question.
I am trying to find the Fidelity fund that is the equivalent of Vanguard's Total Stock Market Index Admiral Fund (VTSAX, expense ratio 0.0400%; invested in 3,941 securities).
Would that be:
Fidelity Zero Total Market Index Fund (FZROX, expense ratio of 0%; invested in 2,797 securities)
or
Fidelity 500 Index Fund (FXAIX, espense ratio of 0.015%, invested in 506 securities, has a slightly better performance)
or something else? I am just looking to keep it simple by buying Fidelity's Stock Market Index Fund.
Thanks for any input. By the way, this is for a Roth IRA, not a taxable account.

Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
Consider FSKAX. If one searches the Fidelity site, choosing only index and Fidelity funds, then sort by expense ratio you can find them. Fidelity overall tends to push or publicize their managed funds first.
Salvia Clevelandii "Winifred Gilman" my favorite. YMMV; not a professional advisor.
Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
FSKAX. Be careful with the zero funds - not recommended for a taxable account because they are proprietary/non-transferable and would have to be sold if you wanted to move to a different brokerage.

Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
If that is what you are interested in have you considered buying the Vanguard's Total Stock Market Index ETF (VTI). At Fidelity it should be commission free and Fidelity supports fractional shares.investor9999 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 11:44 am Hello All,

It's FSKAX, and even cheaper than Vanguard's. See https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/mutua ... /315911693.

Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
If you want that fund, buy the ETF version. At Fidelity, you can buy fractional shares. So if you had $200 to invest you can buy $200 worth of VTI. There are no extra fees for buying this way. This is how I am buying the VXUS ETF. Each paycheck I buy $139.00 worth just as if it was a mutual fund.
Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
I invested in FSKAK and found that it generated substantially more capital gains dividends than the vanguard total stock market index fund.
Edit. I also recommend using VTI instead of FSKAK

Will Fidelity reinvest dividends on a Vanguard ETF?

Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
@CAsage, @mkc, @djshackesq, Thanks for the recommendation to look into FSKAX. We'll follow up. Seems like several votes of confidence on that one.
@mkc - this is for a Roth IRA, not a taxable account - I should have said that.
@TheTimeLord - yes, we are familiar with Vanguard's Total Stock Market Index ETF (VTI) - we just were looking for a Fidelity fund this time, rather than a Vanguard one held by Fidelity.
@Tom_T - I believe Fidelity will reinvest dividends on a Vanguard ETF.
@dual, it's FSKAX, right? (not FSKAK - I did an internet search for that and didn't come up with anything?)
Thanks, @tonyclifton, for your input.
Thanks, everyone! Much appreciated!

Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
What years would that have been? I don't think that was the case in 2019 and 2020, the two years that I owned both FSKAX and VTSAX at the same time.
Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
The last time FSKAX had a Capital Gain was 4/12/19. Here is its Capital Gains History
Date..........Per Share Amount....Reinvestment Price
4/12/19......$0.127.................$82.34
12/28/18.....$0.064.................$69.97
12/14/18....$0.258.................$73.28
4/11/18......$0.016................$75.76
Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
Yeah, I'd just get FSKAX - Fidelity Total Market index to keep it simple.investor9999 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 5:14 pm

You can see from this comparison they are virtually identical and have returns so identical it looks like there is only one stock on the graph.

Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
My experience was in the period from about 2010 to 2020. I owned both FSKAK and VTSAX and I would receive capital gains dividends from FSKAK but none from VTSAX.UpperNwGuy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 5:21 pmWhat years would that have been? Edit. This website shows “ordinary dividends” but no capital gains distributions for VTSAX throughout the 2010s. Scroll to the bottom and expand the listing

See also this website that explicitly shows no capital gains distributions during the 2010s

Edit. Typo FSKAK -> FSKAX

Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
I've read that Vanguard had a special "patent" where their index MF have much lower capital gains than their competitors when the MF also has a Vanguard ETF option.dual wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 11:43 amMy experience was in the period from about 2010 to 2020. Since this a Roth IRA, FSKAX is more than fine. Also heard that Vanguard's patent will be expiring soon or maybe it has recently expired, such that the other funds would get better at this.

FZROX has crushed VTSAX since inception. Turns out there is a way to build a better mousetrap

I checked portfolio visualizer and I see 13.28% for FZROX and 13.12% CAGR for VTSAX since Jan 2019 (FZROX started in Aug 2018).
The difference is the fees over four year almost precisely.

Your definition of crushed is not mine, then. Is there a way to calculate after tax performance (on distributions)? Just wondering if the impact of capital gains impacts the result any…. 0.1% annual alpha on something like a Total Market Index Fund is unheard of
Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
I hold FZROX in Roth. No problem with selling in the future if conditions change.

For something else most equivalent to VTSAX I suggest Fidelity® Total Market Index (FSKAX) ER 0.015%.

Re: Fidelity's Total Stock Market Index fund?
I hold exclusively FZROX and FZILX in my Roth. Because they are proprietary, there's no concern about being deemed substantially similar. And I don't do tax loss harvesting in my Roth account, so if I ever change brokerages, I can swap them in a day or two for VTI and go from there. FSKAX is good too.
Not much of a fee either way, but I also am happy to save miniscule percents. A few bucks saved each year never hurt me.

+1 We use FZROX for our IRAs. We like the concept of no fees.I hold FZROX in Roth. No problem with selling in the future if conditions change.
