Just a quickie reminder about our local chapter meeting tomorrow from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM, at the West Tampa Branch Library. The Tony Garcia Community Room is fairly large, so we can spread out a bit. Masks optional. We'll have open Q&A covering whatever is on participants minds, and those interested can join us afterwards for lunch at a nearby restaurant.

FYI, our next quarterly meeting will be in-person (masks optional), on Sat, Jan 21, from 2 - 4 PM, at the Seminole Heights Branch Library (our usual West Tampa Library meeting space is being renovated, so not available). The Seminole Heights location is still centrally located for those taking I-275 or I-4.

Those interested can still meet for lunch before the meeting (Taco Dirty, or elsewhere). Please note, only covered beverages and dry snacks are allowed in the meeting room (but there is a refrigerator available to stash any lunch leftovers).

We'll have the usual open Q&A discussion covering whatever is on your minds. If anybody wishes to give a short presentation, the room has full A/V capability, with HDMI connections.

As always, we invite Bogleheads of all ages, and life stages, from the Tampa Bay region to join us. You can sign up for our chapter email list/website and also RSVP for the meeting here... https://groups.io/g/tampabaybogleheads.

Looking forward to a lively discussion, and meeting some newbies along with our regulars, as we kick off the new year!

Thanks to all who attended! We had a great meeting, including a handful of first-time attendees who heard about us from Reddit and Early-Retirement.org sites! As always, our open Q&A discussion covered lots of ground. One member gave a nice presentation (with handout) summarizing what happened in 2022, and highlighting how poorly some "sector" and other "focused" funds performed, vs. the total market.

We'll likely use the Seminole Heights Library again for our next quarterly meeting (~ April) as the room is large enough to accommodate our continued growth, and still easily accessible via I-275 and I-4.

Final reminder for our next in-person meeting on Sat, May 6, from 3-5 PM at the Seminole Heights Branch Library.

We'll start with a brief summary of last weeks "Retired" Life Stage Zoom meeting with Mel Lindauer (relevant for all "Life Stages"), and follow with open Q&A discussion covering whatever is on attendees minds.

Some of us are meeting afterwards for dinner at True Food Kitchen in Midtown (covered outdoor patio).

As always, we invite Bogleheads of all ages, and life stages, from the Tampa Bay region to join us. You can sign up for our chapter email list/website (and also RSVP) here... https://groups.io/g/tampabaybogleheads.

Our next local chapter meeting will be this Sat, Aug 12, from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM at the C. Blythe Andrews library. It's located in East Tampa, but still easily accessible via I-275 and I-4. They have ample free parking, and A/V capability. This new location was our best option, because our previous meeting venues (West Tampa and Seminole Heights Libraries) are both being renovated.

Due to extenuating circumstances, I can't conduct this as a hybrid Zoom meeting, so it will be in-person only. We'll have the usual open Q&A discussion covering whatever is on participants minds. After the meeting, those interested can pick a local restaurant for continued conversation.

Thanks to all who attended yesterday's meeting. We had a wide ranging discussion, including a review of the fundamentals of DIY passive index investing for newbies, and detailed discussions about the roles of tax-deferred, tax free (Roth, Roth 401k, HSA), and taxable accounts. We also discussed S&P 500 vs.Total Stock Market, and members thoughts about International investing, and much more. One of our members reviewed William Bernstein's new edition of The Four Pillars of Investing, and a number of other classics.

Those in attendance liked the C. Blythe Andrews meeting room, location, and ample parking, so we'll aim to book our next quarterly meeting there (~early/mid Nov).

Looking forward to learning from one another as our chapter continues to grow!

FYI, our next quarterly meeting will be in-person, at the C. Blythe Andrews Jr. Library (Community Rm A) this coming Sat, Nov 4th, from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM. There is ample parking, and it's not too far from I-275 or I-4.

We'll review some takeaways following the Bogleheads Annual Conference (Oct 13-15 in Rockville, MD), along with our usual open discussion covering whatever topics are on your minds. For those interested, we can meet for lunch afterwards at a local restaurant (TBD).

Our Tampa Bay Chaper, in conjunction with the "Retired" Life Stage, are jointly hosting a very special Zoom meeting on Wed, Mar 13, from 8 - 10 PM (Eastern) that should be of interest for ALL Bogleheads.

5 PM Pacific | 6 PM Mountain | 7 PM Central | 8 PM Eastern

Format: Special guest Betsy Pecor, CFA, recently retired following a successful career as an ACTIVE Small/Mid Cap Portfolio Manager. She'll share investing perspectives as a former "Wall Street Insider" with takeaways for Bogleheads at ALL Life Stages, followed by open Q&A. The meeting will be recorded, and participants (anonymously, if desired) will be able to submit questions following her presentation.

Topic: Some areas she'll cover include:
  • An "Insiders" perspective of the world of Small Caps
  • Transitioning, as a new retiree, from being an ACTIVE portfolio manager to a PASSIVE investor
  • Why an Investment Process is KEY, for DIY'ers and Active Managers alike
Targeted audience: Bogleheads at ALL life stages
