I haven’t bought bedsheets for at least 5 years. I want to buy the top sheet separate from bottom sheet and pillow cases. What I really want is the bottom sheets.

Amazon has a huge selection to choose from. J C Penney has some online deals that are good. Costco has a variety of sheet sets, but I’m unsure of the material.

Target has options where you can buy fitted sheets, flat sheets, and pillow cases separately. I personally prefer their Ultra Soft 100% cotton line, which is 300 thread-count percale with peached finish according to their webpage. They do wear out over time though, so I'm not sure how long of a lifespan you're looking for. In my experience, the fitted sheet wears out faster than the flat sheet, while the pillow cases last a long while.

Macy's on sale. Damask brand I believe. I tried all the fancy sheets rated #1 via the bloggers... came back to the old standby at Macy's. when they are on sale, they are quite the deal.

I used to prefer high thread count like 1200 thread and would look all over for them. But now I realize they're too warm-feeling on my skin.

Now everything is ultra soft high thread count and I can't find cool-feeling 400 count as anymore

This isn't what OP wants, but try percale.
The sateen is "softer and drapes more closely". Percale is more "crisp" and there is more airspace, it that makes sense.
It took us a while to figure out what the key was.

If you don't need "least expensive", you might try a large department store linen section and describe to linen manager what you want. (A new sales clerk may not understand.)
Even with percale, there are differences. And it doesn't need to be ultra expensive; it just might not be the least expensive (I don't know).

Note: some percale can be a bit "crinkly". That's the type we prefer, for the coolness, but not everyone wants that.

Idid inherit some sheets from my parents. They are lovely thicker material than anything Ihave seen in this century.

I may try bambu. If bambu doesn’t work, I will try linen.linen is a stronger material than cotton.

Thread counts in bedding is really not an indication of quality. When yarns are created, the fiber is twisted and it creates a yarn. Then these yarns are plied together because they are stronger when twisted together. Sheet manufacturers are counting the plies in an inch, not the yarn that is actually woven. A 300 thread count sheet may be made up of 150 threads per inch with each thread containing 2 plies. Or 75 threads containing containing 4 plies. Or even 50 threads mad up of 6 plies. The 150 thread with 2 plies will besofter and smother bur less strong than 50 threads with 6 plies.

Bamboo is cooler feeling, softer, but also significantly less durable than cotton. The dryer can kill a bamboo bottom sheet after about 8-10 dry cycles. Best to air dry

"Bamboo" is another marketing scam. It is not the bast fiber from bamboo stalks that everyone naturally thinks it is. Instead, it is simply viscose rayon made with the same polluting solvents and processes as used for decades, but now using ground up bamboo as the source of dissolving wood pulp from which cellulose is derived. The only redeeming thing you might be able to say is it is better to make viscose rayon from bamboo than from old growth rainforest trees. However, it's not good to make viscose rayon from anything.

I recently bought a 100% cotton, "sateen" fitted bottom sheet from Cuddledown, based on Wirecutter's "best cotton sheets" recommendation:

"The Cuddledown sheets are as luxe as others we’ve tried that cost five times the price. They’re one of the softest sets we’ve ever tested, and they’re airier than most other sateens we’ve slept on."

To be clear, I don't follow Wirecutter recommendations blindly, but I was in need of some new sheets and decided to try out Cuddledown's sateen bottom sheet. So far, I have only washed the sheet and have yet to actually use it, but it felt nice out of the package, and dryer.

Wirecutter indicated customer service issues with Cuddledown, which I can attest to. The ordering process was kind of a pain, but I was able to eventually submit the order (I think there were credit card validation issues. I think Wirecutter reported slow customer response time or something, though I don't recall offhand, for sure). On the positive side, Cuddledown apparently offers an "unconditional guarantee" on their products.

Consider that conventionally grown cotton absorbs and retains a lot of pesticides. You may wish to consider organic cotton sheets like those at Boll and Branch.
