CA Healthcare Worker Retention Payments 2022

Post by MoleMan1349 »

Hi all,

I work for a large academic medical center and we were all recently informed about this - it is California legislation signed in June 2022 but the application process is just beginning from now until next month.

It is a little complex but basically eligible CA hospital/SNF healthcare workers (and connected clinics) can receive bonuses paid from the state (through the employer) of anywhere from $750-$1500 (see details on links, full time vs part time, employer matches, etc).

The employer is responsible for applying (not the individual/worker) and then pays it out (funds are from CA) - likely by January 2023. Here are the links below - thought many CA healthcare worker bogleheads may be interested.

Actionable Questions -

1) For those aware of this already or after reviewing, does anyone see how this would be taxed? Assuming W2 income so federal/FICA but not sure about state tax
2) They mention the eligible amount of state payments but then mention matching employer payments - all the info from our employer is vague though, does this match look like it is required?
