Any thoughts on why mid-caps have fared relatively so well?

I always understood mid-caps shone brightest during cyclical upswings, but it appears they are doing very well in this down-market. Any ideas?

VIMAX (VOO) is down over 25% this year. S&P400 is down 21%.

Don't think your stats are right.

Data for 2022 stripped from my Vanguard portfolio summary today. Not year over year.

I have IJJ (Mid-Cap Value fund in my portfolio). It is -16.95% YTD vs. -23.86 for ITOT (My main holding).
To be honest, I don't know why it has fared better. Value in general has fared better than growth. The valuations are lower (not that I think too much about it).

IJK (Mid Cap Growth) is down worse than ITOT (-25 and some change).

Not that past performance is an indication of the future; however, if you look at Mid-cap value over 1972-1982 or 72-92; you'll see it did quite well during the higher inflation period compared to Large Caps.

That's because it is value, not because it is mid. VTV (Vanguard LC Value) is down -12.3%, VBR (Vanguard SC Value is down 15.9%. Value in general went down less, probably because it never went so high in the previous run up.

Ok I have VIGAX but am trying hard not to peek at this mess, and OP is saying that being down 33% is GOOD?

:confused

That’s what I said. I even compared it to a growth etf.
