Approach to fixing a smart toilet issue

Post by vveat »

We have an Ove Saga smart (bidet) toilet that we bought from Costco end of 2019 (i.e. now is out of warranty). Full unit, not just a seat, self-flushing. It's worked great for close to 3 years, we couldn't be happier. Until now that is, when it started dripping a bit of water into the bowl on regular basis (not always but often). The problem is even not so much the drip itself, but the fact that the unit tops up the tank every 7-8 minutes (probably some sensor monitors the water level), and the noise is highly annoying especially at night.

My husband is handy and has installed and/or fixed variety of regular toilets and plumbing issues, but this one gives him pause. We are worried that trying to detach and lift the top may interfere with all the electronics embedded in it. The manual is basic and not helpful, and internet searching doesn't indicate this is a common issue (most leaks seem to happen upon or shortly after installation).

We are wondering whether to (1) try calling Ove's customer service despite the out of warranty situation; (2) call in a regular plumber; (3) see if Costco offers any support. Has anybody been in a similar situation (needing a smart toilet repair - are plumbers generally familiar with them?

Thanks!

Sounds like a valve/flapper/rubber part of some sort is not sealing correctly, either because it's aged or shifted out of position or something over time.

But I'm unfamiliar with smart toilets/bidets, so can't really say more.

Call the manufacturer, definitely. There's nothing to lose They might tell you a way to diagnose the problem and/or bring up trouble codes.

I wouldn't bring up that the thing is out of warranty, but if they ask the purchase date, of course you need to tell them. Still you can politely ask to talk to a service person who might help.

Often a manufacturer will make it right if there's a problem. You never know. Just be polite and ask if they can help, etc.

Or you can return to Costco.

Good suggestion. That kind of custom item, not going to find many YouTube repairs videos.

Hard water deposit on the flapper causing a minimal leak into bowl. Only fix is a new flapper (don't try scrubbing the old flapper or putting it in vinegar, just get a new flapper specific to that toilet).

Sounds like it's worth a try. Yes, buy the one made by this manufacturer for this toilet.
