Cape Cod trip in two weeks - anything to see?
Driving from Syracuse to visit some friends in Plymouth MA and then spend a couple nights in Cape Cod. What should we go see and do? DW and I are age 61, like to hike a couple miles not much more, we like seafood, budget normally tops at $25-$35 max per person per meal unless it’s really special, any activities near the water would be great, quaint shopping areas, antique stores, acoustic music, short boat tour would be neat, any off the path places my BH brothers and sisters would recommend? Thanks

There's plenty of beach, shopping, boat tours, and seafood. You might be stretching that budget, though.Parkinglotracer wrote: ↑Mon Jun 13, 2022 6:36 pm Driving from Syracuse to visit some friends in Plymouth MA and then spend a couple nights in Cape Cod. I used to travel to the Cape and South shore for work. I recall Hyannis area having a great selection of restaurants. Maybe take the ferry to Martha's vineyard. It'll be packed I'm sure. I visited MV in the fall, much less crowded.
Re: Cape Cod trip in two weeks - anything to see?
So many things to do in both the Plymouth area and the Cape. The cape is quite large, are you targeting a specific town/area ?(i.e. Provincetown at the tip or Falmouth at the south).
If you like to ride bikes, the Cape Cod Rail trail can't be beat - bikes are inexpensive to rent. Here is great info (we have been on most of the trails, spectacular scenery):
https://www.capecodchamber.org/things-t ... ike-paths/
Try Groupon for daily special discounts. And if you have never been on a whale watch, it is one of the best things you can do anywhere on the MA coast and there are lots of places on the Cape!
Trip Advisor has some great recommendations:
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions ... setts.html
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions ... setts.html
There are 2 museums not to miss:
John F. Kennedy Museum Hyannis https://jfkhyannismuseum.org/
Heritage Museum & Gardens Sandwich https://heritagemuseumsandgardens.org/ - VERY UNIQUE! Exquisite gardens and an automobile museum unlike any you have seen
Falmouth is very beautiful and you can catch a ferry over to Martha's Vineyard for the day.
Highfield Hall & Gardens is excellent https://highfieldhallandgardens.org/
If you like to hike you can try MA Audubon https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoor ... n/cape-cod
and there are many, many wildlife sanctuaries all over the cape - some state, some federal
Trustees of Reservations https://thetrustees.org/places-to-go/?_ ... cape%20cod
As far as eating, it can be quite expensive these days. Try local seafood shacks/delis/cafes for great food and even local grocery stores have excellent takeout (Market Basket in Bourne has super lobster rolls for 1/4 of the price of just about anywhere else!
Enjoy - feel free to PM me if you have specific questions (we live in MA and have many relatives and friends on the Cape so go there often and my husband grew up on the ocean near Plymouth). Have a fantastic trip!

Re: Cape Cod trip in two weeks - anything to see?
When we visited as a family, we went on a whale watch. We definitely got our money’s worth, as at least 3 times whales surfaced within 25 feet of the vessel & many more were sighted at varying distances.

+1
And make sure you go straight to Edgartown. Don’t get stuck in Oak Bluffs.

For something really neat, try Skaket Beach, near Orleans. When the tide is out you can walk really far on the mud flats.

You don't say when you're going and that can make a world of difference. June (with the new Juneteenth holiday), July & August, expect to see crowds and lines and traffic and - from what I heard on local radio the other day - $55 lobster rolls ... !!!
The Cape was always super-popular in the summer and has become much more so with Covid. If you're in Plymouth anyway, why not explore Plymouth and the South Shore towns to the north. Tons of great food and great beaches, activities, museums. (I was recently back at Nantasket after many years. What a gorgeous beach! And the Lifesaving Museum in Hull is a national treasure!)
Plus you might find a $40 lobster roll along the way on the South Shore . The local 99 restaurant chain is apparently charging $30-ish. Some people love the 99's lobster rolls but they're not vacation-special.

If by "small" you mean less expensive, it often seems to be quite the opposite around here ... !
P.S. Just saw your thread subject line - you're going in two weeks. The run-up to the 4th of July. Hope you really love crowds & traffic ... ! (Mid-week might possibly be a little better but Metro Boston area traffic is getting brutal again!)

If you will be in Boston, there is a high speed ferry to Provincetown (the northern tip of Cape Cod). It sure beats driving there.

For lobster rolls if in Boston, Either James Hook, or Yankee Lobster both in the Seaport section of Boston.

I have not been to the cape in many years, but OP might also check out the Cape Flyer train as a way to avoid terrific jams at the bridges.

Re: Cape Cod trip in two weeks - anything to see?
Been going to the Cape my entire life and we have a house there. Many good replies above.
It's 60+ miles from the canal to Provincetown. So two days isn't enough to "see the Cape."
Pick a few things or areas to go:
- whale watching (many options)
- CC National Seashore - great beaches, views and many walking/biking/hiking trails. Also many towns have their own beaches.
- CC Rail Trail for biking; also a nice spur from Harwich into Chatham
- many lighthouses around
- lots of art and funk in P'town
- harbor cruise around Hyannis harbor
- several cool nature preserves with trails
- many places to rent kayaks and you can stay in sheltered areas, not the open ocean
- Route 6A is a much prettier drive (some antiques) than Route 28, which is highly developed/crowded in parts of the Upper Cape.
Lobster rolls have hit $30+ in many areas, and this is just for lunch.

Thank you - this will help. I think we would enjoy a harbor cruise. We will try to drive 6A. Two days will not be enough we know but we hope we can get a feel for the Cape in that short period of time. Thank you.Quahog Guy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 14, 2022 2:36 pm Been going to the Cape my entire life and we have a house there. Many good replies above.

Hope you have a nice time, hope you'll report back and hope you find a vacation-worthy lobster roll!

Thankfully no where near Boston driving. Drove from Plymouth to P-town then back to Orleans on Cape today (Monday) - traffic was pretty light the entire day - the weather wasn’t great so maybe all the other tourists stayed in.PeninsulaPerson wrote: ↑Tue Jun 14, 2022 8:34 amParkinglotracer wrote: ↑Tue Jun 14, 2022 12:11 am

Walked a bit on Nauset beach. Beautiful.
Great clam chowder and lobster bisque ($9each) / salad $13) at the lobster roll in P-town. Ice cream cones for dessert down the street. Great art shops and all. Great flounder ($22) and shrimp ($21) with mashed potatoes and cole slaw / fries in Orleans at Land Ho! Highly recommend it. Coors light / gin and tonic were only 5-6 dollars each. Not Upstate NY cheap drink prices but close.

I just spent most of my weekend in Oak Bluffs, and it was very nice. Went to Edgartown by bike and had lunch there. Was nice too. Matter of preference. Both pretty nice. We had some great meals in Oak Bluffs, walked to beach and had a really nice hotel with great service.Picasso wrote: ↑Tue Jun 14, 2022 12:17 amHa! MV is a great place to bike, as is the cape cod rail trail and Provincetown trail. Lots of places to rent kayaks on MV. Can take a sail.

If this hasn’t been mentioned, this is a nice way to see the Cape Cod Canal, and learn its history: https://hylinecruises.com/schedules-rat ... l-cruises/ . Not too far from Plymouth either. We live on the Cape and do a cruise every other summer or so.

Re: Cape Cod trip in two weeks - anything to see?
It has been awhile since I took the ferry from Hyannis to Martha's vineyard, but I was pretty annoyed with the parking situation the last time I did it. As we got close to the area where the ferry departs, a couple people in uniform, standing on the road, directed us into a smallish parking lot. I got the impression that they might be municipal employees, and that we didn't have a choice if we wanted to park and take the ferry. Anyway, the amount we paid to park there was outrageous. I subsequently found out that there was parking available closer to the ferry for about a quarter of the price we paid. We paid upon arrival at the lot, and were given a receipt or ticket of some sort. When we were leaving the lot, they basically wouldn't let us leave until we gave them the receipt back, so I rolled the car window down and threw it on the ground. Then they let us leave. I complained in writing to the local government, but never got a response.

Again, I haven't been there for a while, and others should correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you will get into some traffic jams this time of year on Cape Cod. There isn't room on the narrow peninsula for a wide, several-lane highway.

Been on cape two days this week and no traffic jams. We went to eastham today, rented bikes and rode them about 5 miles with DW to Nauset light house which is on front of cape cod potato chip bag. Then drove 6A as was recommended here … to chatem - nice trio thanks for suggestion. Power was out in chatem due to car accident - nice place though.OpenMinded1 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 5:03 am Again, I haven't been there for a while, and others should correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you will get into some traffic jams this time of year on Cape Cod. We didn’t have any lobster rolls for us and I can’t remember the price - some places had market price for lobster so tough to know … We did have oysters on half shell ($3 each) at a waterfront bar in Plymouth, clam chowder and lobster bisque at the lobster roll in providence ($9), baked flounder dinner at Land Ho! ($25?) in Orleans. Prices were touristy as expected but not the worse we have ever seen.Shallowpockets wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 5:05 pm How much is a lobster roll? Shallow pockets… etal.
We happen to be in Orleans this week …
Lobster rolls range from $23-$25, but I’ve also seen one priced at $32.
Clam strip rolls around $13, scallop rolls around $17, fish sandwich (cod) around $13.
Most entrees for dinners run in the $21-$30 ranges, although selected dishes have been in the $30’s.
From Memorial Day to Labor Day the traffic up here is nuts… and IMO the locals cause most of this… just MO.
Heard on the radio at 11 am this morning about a half hour backup to just get on the 2 bridges over the canal to
get onto the cape. July 4 long weekend beckons …..

If you're in to baseball, try and catch a Cape Cod League game.

A doctor upon return.
I would try to do some whale watching if you get a chance.

Check out Cape Cod Chip factory in Hyannis. Free tours and I think you get a free bag of their awesome chips on each visit.

$25 for a lobster roll I would never do. That is one insane food markup.Ace1 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 1:09 pm Shallow pockets… etal.
