skip22 wrote: Mon Apr 11, 2022 10:27 pm Have appreciated everyone's input on this thread, especially as my situation has dragged on some. In case it happens to anyone else, wanted to mention the delay that has come up for me that I haven't seen noted in this thread yet.
(As with many others here, I upped my withholding, and made an estimated payment, so that I could receive the maximum $5K in I Bonds as the main part of the refund after never having bothered with this I bond refund before.)

My timeline (I e-filed via H&R Block software download):

1) Federal return submitted and accepted on 2/16.

Since then, on the IRS Refund Status page:
For the 1st ~3 weeks after that, I had What I assume is the normal screen with the 3 part bar near the top, that in my case showed the return at the 1st (received) stage.
After 3 weeks or so, the bar part went away and, as others here noted, the "We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe...." message appeared.
Now, for the last week or two, the message changed a little bit to "Your tax return is still being processed..."

2) Then, last Thursday (4/7), I received a snail mail notification from the IRS that they were worried the return I submitted might be a result of identity theft, and that I needed to either go online or call to answer some questions "to verify your identity before we process the income tax return...". (The generic letter code of the IRS letter is 5071C (https://www.irs.gov/individuals/underst ... c-or-6331c).)

I already had an ID.me account, so I went online that evening and hopefully resolved the issue. (If I remember correctly, they just ask a few questions, including AGI and refund on the return, control # on the IRS letter, etc..)

I thought I read somewhere it said that the normal expected 3 weeks wait for refund after receipt is when I should anticipate the refund after having resolved the 5071C issue. However, per the IRS page I linked to above about letter #5071C, it says "It will take up to 9 weeks to receive your refund or credit any overpayment to your account.". (I hope they're being conservative, and it doesn't take that long.)

A little frustrating that after having submitted 35-40 federal returns in my lifetime, it's the only one with a large anticipated refund that becomes the 1st one I can remember that will have had any noticeable delay.
Just to update my situation, I hadn't queried my federal return's status on the IRS's "Refund Status" webpage since this past Wednesday or Thursday. However, when I looked this evening, my return is finally showing as approved, and the webpage says the cash (direct deposit to my bank) portion of my refund should be expected by May 11th. (It says the I bonds could take 3 weeks after the refund was sent to be received.)

So, to summarize the main dates for me, they're:

1) Return e-filed (submitted and accepted) with H & R Block software on 2/16.

2) Received letter from the IRS around 4/5 that I needed to verify my identity (IRS code 5071C), which I did online that day.

3) Return approved sometime between 5/4-7.
All my federal refunds are finally in, so just to put dates on them to close out my 2021 tax refund saga:

1) Received cash portion of refund via direct deposit on 5/11.

2) Received paper I bond 5/16. (So, it took almost exactly 3 months from return submittal to full refund. Thankfully received just 1 $5K bond, so it will be easier to convert to electronic.)

I had to do a paper filing this year because of ITIN requirements for my spouse. Filed our returns directly with a local IRS office on Mar 14th. No update on the refunds status. Called IRS representative and enquired about the delay. I was told to wait for 16 weeks from submission date.

Around Feb 7 I paper filed for my two younger children with the I Bond overpayment technique, mailed to the Kansas City IRS location. 1 of them showed up on the IRS Where's My Refund page today, earlier than expected! Hoping the other shows up next week.

3/13 - e-filed federal and state using TurboTax

...
5/16 - IRS "Where's my refund" says, "Your tax return is still being processed"
Update:

Received a letter from the IRS today saying they need to verify my identity before processing my return -- to protect me from possible identity theft.

Seems ridiculous that they're concerned the return might involve identity theft. Names, filing status, address, sources of income, schedules, investment return sources, bank account where I asked refund to be deposited, all match previous half-decade of returns.

Regardless, logged into their site using my ID.me credentials, answered a half-dozen questions, and now my return will start being processed. They said that processing usually takes 9 weeks.

Most likely a typo on my end, where I put my older child's info. The two younger ones are still not in the system, so the waiting continues.

Just wondering if anyone else still waiting on their 2021 income tax refund from the state of CA.

E-filed: 4/11/2022 both Fed and State.
I owed and paid Federal on 4/17/2022 $6,500.

It’s 5/30/2022 now and I am still waiting for CA 2021 income tax refund of $958.

What do I do?

Thank you!

So I registered to myftb on the ftb.ca.gov.

The status of my 2021 tax return is "not received" How can this be? I e-filed on 4/15/2022.

Yikes! So am on a queue of chatting now. Also, will call my tax prep who will come in an hour or so. No wonder I didn't receive the refund yet.

I mailed out my return in mid-February, so the IRS should have received 16 weeks ago. Does this mean I might expect something other than, "we have no information....." like I have been seeing for the last 4 months?

2/22/22: Filed paper returns via USPS
4/1/22: Received CA state refund via direct deposit
7/27/22: Received federal refund (less requested Series I Savings Bond amount; also appears to include a bit of interest) via direct deposit

So about five weeks for state refund and about five months for federal refund. I Bonds still pending.

No idea! I have never done that (rolling a refund, that is). I definitely don't plan on rolling it to 2022 - I will stand to lose two years of interest, wouldn't I?

Looking back I am not sure it took that much longer than before. I never kept track of it and it just popped up in my bank. But with all the complaints this year and bad press for IRS it seemed panic time. I see electronic filers did not always get them earlier. We probably will file electronic this year. And I will slice my tax withholding on the RMW extremely fine.

Let me take a crack at this - RMW = required minimum withholding?

Looks like PinotGris will try to adjust his/her withholding to make sure that he/she owes a small amount in taxes come tax time 04/2023.

Well< I am not sure how to do that I wish I did! We were very conservative about withholding taxes from our required minimum withholding, meaning err on the more side and get a refund back than on the less side and get a penalty. This time I will not do that, and calculate more carefully and withhold just right, may be owe some if necessary.

Ohhhh I see....

This will likely be a trend if the IRS continues with their backlog.

Now I'm curious, how do one determine their required minimum withholding on both Fed and State.

Should I take the amount owed per last year's tax return and add 5% to it? What do you think?

For Federal, the minimum is the lower of the two safe-harbor amounts - 100% (110% if previous year's AGI was over $150K) of the previous year's tax and 90% of the current year's tax. State rules vary.

My wife and I make estimated payments and make them so that for the first three quarters, withholding plus YTD estimated payments are at least the appropriate percentage (25%, 50%, and 75%) of the minimum based on the 100% (110%) of the previous year's tax. By the time 1/15 rolls around, our tax picture is 99% complete and the payment made brings us up to a little over 90% of where we expect the final number will be and then pay the balance on 4/15.

Did the money just arrived in your account or did you also receive info via mail?

So I thank you since this gives me hope. I filed in April via mail so mine should arrive in October.

PS.
I used HRB (electronically) last year and at the end of my federal tax return, I had to enter my previous year's AGI value. Even though I entered the proper value, it was not accepted for electronic filing (yes, I tried it a number of times). And I verified the amount with the IRS website and my previous year's documents. (I had been filing with HRB for a number of years.) So was disappointed that I had to mail in my return.

This happened to me and I found out that H&R Block didn't send it in. I was e-filing too. Luckily, I found out that a month after e-filing. H&R block rectify the issue and I got my refund almost immediately.

So, you may want to check with H&R Block.

This happened to me and I found out that H&R Block didn't send it in. I was e-filing too. Luckily, I found out that a month after e-filing. H&R block rectify the issue and I got my refund almost immediately.

So, you may want to check with H&R Block.

How did you check with H&R Block?

Ask the tax preparer (the one who handle your tax return) for proof of sending.

Finally got my refund. We had to mail it in because of one form. Sent in back in later March and the refund was in my account on 9/21 so about 6 months.

Next up is my late father's refund. We just mailed that one in a few months ago so I'm guessing we might see it before spring 2023.

SO I sent my mom's deceased tax return in via paper (H&R Block didn't allow me to e-file) via certified mail which was received 22 Feb 22. I subsequently sent in a 1310 form (claiming for a deceased taxpayer with appropriate attachments) which was received on 2 May. Yesterday, I received a letter from them asking for the forms they received on 2 May. Had also sent in an 8822 (change of address for the Estate) on 2 Aug. But the letter asking for the forms I sent in in May was sent to the Estate at my old address. Something really needs to be fixed. :?

Hallelujah! I got my 2021 refund via USPS today! After a 7-month wait!

I paper-filed a 1041 trust return in Mar 2022. [E-filing via TurboTax Business kept rejecting my Name Control field, even though I used the same Name Control field and EIN to buy I-bonds at the Treasury Direct web site. Finally I gave up and filed a paper return.]

Due to a conservative miscalculation, my refund was $6k. I will try to owe the IRS next year!

O Fraptious Day! Calloo! Callay!!@
Today I finally got my $5000 I-bond refund from my 2021 return , filed in March.
And it came as one $5000 I-bond. In the past they sent a combination of smaller bonds.

I missed out on almost all of the 9.62%....the bond was issued 10/22 and I received no interest (unless the interest will miraculously appear in my bank account this month). But I'm not going to waste my time complaining.

Next year if I get a refund I will take it in cash and buy TIPS instead.

I try to make sure I only get under $50 back on my state and federal returns and I take them to the post-office and watch them hand cancel the returns (taking a photo of the stamped return). This year my state return was electronically deposited 22 days later and my federal return 183 days later (the longest it's ever taken). Seems like they don't like processing paper returns.

You haven't missed out on almost all of the 9.62%, but you will be receiving it much later than you might have preferred. Your I Bond will receive the 9.62% annual rate for the first 6 months you own it (Oct 1, 2022 - Mar 31, 2023). On Apr 1, 2023 the rate will adjust to the new rate coming into effect on Nov 1, 2022 and you will receive that for the next 6 months. The rate for your I Bond will change again on Oct 1, 2023 to the rate announced on May 1, 2023, and so on for the time you own the I Bond. The interest is credited to your I Bond semi-annually, it is not sent to your bank account.

Another Hallelujah. Received notice from my bank that I received my deposit from IRS.

Addition: I was owed $370 but received $379.06. I guess it was because their payment was late.

Thanks, but the point was not the interest rate.

The Fed. has been holding my overpayment of $5K since March, 2022. I have, so far, received no interest on that payment. The I-bond that I received was dated October, 2022 , so unless I am surprised by a future deposit into my savings account, I will receive only one month of interest (October) for the 7+ months that the Fed has had my $5000.

I filed a 2020 paper amendment in mid-March for a FTC carryback and just received a paper check today nearly 37 weeks later. The strange thing is per the IRS website, it still shows that my amendment hasn't been processed yet  They did include a little interest.

Got our 2021 Federal refund today! We filed by paper in October 2022, so refund took about 8 weeks.

We also seemed to have gotten a little interest. If anyone has a link or idea to how interest would be calculated can they let me know please? (I probably knew at one time, but I'm getting old and forgetful.) Thanks!

3/13 - e-filed federal and state using TurboTax
3/13 - Federal and state returns accepted
3/20 - State refund direct deposit received
5/23 - Received letter from IRS - they need to verify my identity before processing my return
5/23 - Verified identity with IRS, online
6/15 - Federal refund direct deposit received
Congratulations. Even with e-filing it took 3 months. There is hope for me. :confused
So, have you got your refund yet?

My update:
- paper filed 4/1/2022 for tax year 2021; received refund late last week.
- eFiled 4/10/2021 for tax year 2020; still waiting for refund
An update:

Our refund on year 2020 taxes should be here in six weeks. YAYAYAYAYAYAYAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!

Today, after waiting patiently for two years - having dialled, in vain, the 1-800-429-1040 number umpteen times over that time frame - I decided to get me an appointment at the local IRS office.

When I called, I quickly got through to an IRS officer who said maybe she could help me. So what did I want - talk with her right now or still make an appointment (it was either/or not both)? I said (to myself) "why not give it a shot?" and informed her that our refund from 2020 was not here yet. After getting all my information, she kept me on the phone for nearly an hour while she went back and forth researching the issue.

Finally, she said that the refund had been placed on hold and now that I had answered all her (their) questions, she would be able to release the hold on the refund.

So, here's where it gets really funny. I asked her why the hold had been placed. I had made several credit card payments (no mistakes from my side), but the last couple of them were made in 2021. And apparently, the last one was made with the account already in a credit state (in other words, we had already made the outstanding taxes, but I went ahead and made an extra credit card payment. That triggers some alarm switch in the IRS computing system, which places the refund on hold.

That's ok, but apparently a) no notification would ever be sent back to the taxpayer and b) the hold would ever be released if the taxpayer contacted the IRS. Do you get the conundrum??

Here I am being told (popular bogleheads wisdom) - just wait for some more time and IRS will figure it out. And even when I bucked the advice and tried calling, it was not like I was getting through past the IRS phonelines. And over there IRS is waiting with bated breath (NOT!) for me to call back and confirm that I really did make the payments that I did, and which have already gotten deposited in their coffers. :moneybag

TLDR: if you haven't received your refund from 2020 or 2021, you might want to call the number to set up an appointment with the local IRS office. And the call might directly connect to an IRS officer who might be able to research your return and tell you immediately what the issue is - or release any hold on your refund. Your local number might be different. The one I called was 844-545-5640.

FINALY received my deceased mother's 2021 tax refund today. IRS received it certified mail on Filed Feb 21, 2022. Paper option was the only available option using H&R Bock. Gave account info for direct deposit. After all this time, received a whopping $36.22 in interest on a $2204 refund. And of course we moved in Aug of last year so sent IRS Fm 8822 in August. Asked Senator Lankford's office to intervene on April 3. Had to provide all the documents again, letters of administration, 2 forms of ID, etc. And of course they mailed a physical check to my old address. Thank goodness the PO continued to forward the mail.

Amended 2021 taxes- Still awaiting refund.

Post by Ceecee619 »

[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek]

Hello, I wanted to see if anyone who filed an Amended Return for 2021, still awaiting refund. Date Amended Return was accepted on my transcript 9/2022. I applied for Tax Advocate assists a year ago and they notified me in December of 2023 stating that the IRS would be issuing a refund to me (which he gave me the dollar amount) between Jan. 24 -March 7th. I still have not received the refund. I do have tax codes on transcript reading 971,810,766,767,291?
