Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Makes sense that we'd soar today with today being payday. I'm sure my 401k buys will go into effect after close and we'll drop 4% on Monday
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
I am so tempted to pickup some SQQQ and FNGD but they are still quite pricey need closer to their 52 week low.
This is definitely a fake pump, just wait for QT to begin

Market wants to hear serious and realistic from The Fed right now, not hopeful. It likes The Fed taking inflation seriously.elderwise wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 9:33 amIt's ironic J Pow says no guarantee of soft landing yesteday and stocks jumpfirebirdparts wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 9:29 am The Fed will be happy to gain a little altitude for the next bombing run.

Stop trying to understand the market. The market is a joke - an even if I gave you the next inflation number - you would not know its direction. The market is bipolar. It's a lot of behavioral finance involved and a lot of herding of ppl buying buying buying - and selling selling selling....TheTimeLord wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 9:41 amMarket wants to hear serious and realistic from The Fed right now, not hopeful. Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
So we were in "extreme fear" of 6 which perhaps indicates being oversold, but RSI wasn't below 30, and VIX wasn't 40, so the analysts who believe in these things weren't calling a capitulation/bottom.
This rally has me pretty skeptical, although so much green in one day does feel nice (hey it's possible that stock can go up!). But since there's no actual news that triggered this rally, it's doubtless going to dump again soon. The particularly odd thing about it for me is that for the entire last month, every Friday has been horrible ("risk-off" as the analysts like to rationalize).

Any news today? I know Kashkari is talking today, is he saying something dovish? He is the most dovish Fed president but not a voting member this year.

(Reuters) - The Federal Reserve will do what it needs to do to bring down inflation, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said on Friday, though how much it will need to do depends in part on how quickly energy supply constraints can be eased.
"I'll be honest, I hope it's less," Kashkari said at the start of a Dallas Fed conference on energy and inflation.
Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
Did not realize he is Fed president now! I used to watch a lot of CNBC back in 2009. Anyone from that era could remember those senate/house hearings where they pounded him question after question. After reading Tim Geithner's book I am just glad he was there!Marseille07 wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 11:00 am Any news today? I know Kashkari is talking today, is he saying something dovish? Paulson definitely used his help for taking punches from congress; while they quietly worked on using TARP funds in the background. (coincidentally tea party rose in prominence and politicians fueled it with frustration on TARP spending. History is brutal and often forgotten!)

Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
This jump today is a joke but I guess we should expect it during the volatility of a bear market- pain still ahead for the economy. Powell admitted yesterday in his interview with Marketplace that they are not in control of all factors for inflation and it is obvious supply chain issues, which are contributing to inflation if not the primary driver, will persist as China and others continue disruptions due to covid outbreaks. The Fed is focused on the relationship between employment/inflation, meaning they intend to engineer a recession for employment demand to decrease. Powell noted we have roughly 2 job openings for every unemployed person right now.
True, no one can predict the market, but we can make probable projections for the economy. The market is pricing in future rate cuts due to a recession. Not sure why since the Fed can't cut rates until inflation is under control and we have a way to go for that, especially if covid disruptions continue to disrupt the supply chain.

Yeah, for this to make sense you'd have to assume the market is pricing in 2 years of events - the Fed bringing inflation under control, then recession, and then rate cuts.ActiveIndexer wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 11:21 am True, no one can predict the market, but we can make probable projections for the economy. As mentioned earlier, Kashkari's comments weren't dovish to begin with. I don't know what people were buying. He's not even a voting member this year.

I purchased my first ever individual stock two days ago: Coinbase (COIN)
I am not interested in owning any particular crypto currency, but I'm quite interested in owning a real company that runs a platform for trading/storing them and has real business fundamentals. Especially when said company has $7 billion in cash reserves with (at the time) a $12 billion market cap and a P/E ratio of 4. I stuck some "entertainment" money in there on a Fidelity brokerage account I opened just to buy it. Good start so far!

Just curious. With all the predictions about the market and proclamations about moves why doesn't this forum have a thread for that?
