Can’t say for sure until all the banks update on Monday (boo New Years on Friday) but looks like 21% for me. Wish I would have put more cash in the market instead of paying down debt.
But I didn’t know and I’d be way more upset at the opposite so thumbs up.

You can do anything you want in life. The rub is that there are consequences.
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
Finished the year, not including contributions:
Solo 401k: up 44%
Roth IRA: up 20%
Total including taxable: up 26.5%
What a year!

Taxable account and Roth IRA - about 50% of my net worth - 128%
401k which is the other 50% of my net worth - 33%
I was more conservative in my 401k.

Very nice. In 2020 we went up 7x annual expenses.
Side note: Why doesn't the Vanguard app give a projected return rate for a 1 year period (or for a period less than a year)?
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
You can see for the past year the performance of a fund, but they can't see the future to tell you the next year performance. Also they can get sued for making false affirmations about future performancemmcmonster wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 8:55 amVery nice. In 2020 we went up 7x annual expenses.

Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
2020 was my first year making withdrawals from retirement funds.
Retirement portfolio started 2020 year 50-50 VTSAX - VBTLX. Looks like at 12/31/20 close, VTSAX +20.99% YTD, VBTLX +11.62.
So, I'm up _roughly_ 16.3 overall for 2020, right? I'm not factoring in about 17,000 in withdrawals, and the tax I'm going to pay on that amount, so final return is somewhat lower, I think.
I rebalanced this morning.
EDIT: VBTLX was up 7.71%. I was reading the share price! only look once or twice a year.
So, I think I was up roughly 14.35%

For 2020 with a 55/45 3 Fund portfolio VTSAX/VTIAX/VBTLX, we're up 10.5%.
I would have bet long odds against that outcome for most of the year. Good thing I "just stood there" and followed the IPS.

Up 21.23% with a 70/30 portfolio. We are renters and all is invested except emergency fund. Staying the course and some rebalancing during the downturn helped. The numbers do still include savings as well but the bulk is return.

Up 28.7% in 2020. This is a Beardstown number, but I’m retired. I’m 98/2 including EF. I haven’t touched my retirement savings after 4-1/2 years, living solely on my pension.

given i still research all day and night (just googling, youtube, reddit, twitter, etc any source possible) , i can clearly see tesla has a long way to go up still given all the s curve projects that are coming up in 2021 like cyber truck, semi truck, fsd software sales, building a $25k car which will continue to go down in price to $15k which will then take over the market fro those prices ranges since it wont make sense to buy a gasione car at those prices in comparison by any means.
they also are in energy business, which is just getting started (study there charts on hyperchart.co) in energy sector, its clearly about to explode and energy and transportation are the 2 largest industries and tesla is going to dominate both
theres also model 3 and y sales really booming off, there just starting sales of it china today!! so many ordered , there website crashed... rumor is over 100k orders so far
then theres robotaxis, ride hailing service (uber competition using tesla network) , and ton other projects like HVAC, VTOL, super charger networks...
they will be selling there own INSURANCE!!
i coudl go on
given this... i expect price to rise significantly. i see tesla as jsut starting the s curve wave up imo
i did sell 100k to take some profits and live off of it while i dedicate my life to research and content creation on yt

A bit too risky for me. Though I do have about 24% of my wealth tied up in AAPL (which performed marvelously last year) that I bought 11 years ago. But it’s in taxable so I don’t want to sell and pay the tax.

My HSA is up ထ% this year. It started at $0 on January 1st and is much higher now.

Vanguard Accounts (TIRAS and Roths):
01/01/2020 - 12/31/2020
+$231,852.39 INCREASE.
The figure gives the difference in the starting and ending dates account totals.
There were no contributions from outside to any Vanguard accounts, and distributions "outside" thru year end totaled $58,130. My Roth conversion stayed "inside" my Vanguard account, save a wad for taxes, accounted for in the $58,130 figure! .
Savings Bonds Series I:
Total Interest for 2020 = +$8,107.48
Total Interest for 2021 = +$634.26
Vanguard Variable Annuity:

Many of brokerages (especially 401k side) won’t be posting their YTD or Annual performance until a day or two into the New year — guess many folks suffer thru YTD Vs. Annual performance quandary for next a few days ..

24% in aapl is pretty descent size!
i feel ya... coming from a die hard boglehead index fund only holder, this was extreme difficult for me to do
but warren buffet teaches with research it allerviates the need to diversify and with enough researhc, you can remove the feeling of it being risky. all i can say is u have to do it to understand it. i believe i totally understand what warren has been sharing all along and what he does as well. im no warren, but if you figure this out (and it isnt hard), you can easily see why warren gave up everything else cuase the income from this is higher then any paid job possible!
anyways, wishing ya and all greatness and prosperity to 2021!

Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
My extremely conservative portfolio was up 3.61% after paying all my expenses and a bunch of taxes. This keeps me ahead of inflation and preserves my assets for my heirs while letting me sleep like a baby no matter what drugs Mr Market is experimenting with. I am fortunate to have more than I need for the rest of my life so I resist the temptation to gamble it hoping for more.
Next year gets more interesting as quite a lot of my CDs paying 3.something percent are coming due. They are slightly more than 25% of my assets. Over the past 7 years I have not had to dip into my principal at all and have actually increased it, partly because my business did far better than I expected and also because of those 3% CDs. But this coming year might be the first year where I spend some of it.

Interesting thread, thanks everyone for sharing. We've been blessed by good health and excellent market performances in our investments: 39% NW increase with contributions in 2020, or roughly 36.5% subtracting contributions and contribution growth.
My 100/0 portfolio hasn't changed in the past 5 years or so, now at ~40%++ in my employer's stock (mega-cap tech, the % has been increasing over the years), rest in growth funds (mostly FDGRX, TRBCX, and PRGFX). No YOLOs in TSLA, ZM or any other individual stocks. I know this is non-Boglehead-approved but it has been working for us and I'm sticking with it. We know we're fortunate so we've been making 5-digit charitable contributions every year.

Last year through my AA somewhat out of whack somewhat (should be 88/12). Fixing some with IRAs and 401k changes (moving provider so will move existing funds and contributions to bonds).
2019 529 Return: 24% (excluding contributions). Was 65/35, moving to 60/40 but also a little out of whack after a good year (currently 69/31). All new contributions going to bonds.
Really good year. Best since 2013. But dollar amounts are higher because balances are higher, looking at increase that is 1.25 times gross salary in retirement accounts and 10% for 529. I told my wife that if we have 3 more years like this we can retire
2020 529 Return: 13.53% (excluding contributions). Roughly 66/34 allocation, target is 55/45 so actually moved opposite desired direction (mostly due to returns). Working on correcting this.
Overall another good year. Crossed $2 million in retirement accounts. Did not expect that after the run up last year (and what happened earlier this year). But it's an advantage to staying the course.

on monday there going to announce how many cars they could build in q4, they just released in china extra low prices for model y by 30% then everyone initailly thought they would release and it got over 100k orders is the rumor.
why is the 30% drop in price so important? its the fruits of all of their labors in MANUFACTURING ADVANTAGE, they have manufacturing tech that nobody else has. like the GIGA PRESS (one press creating the whole bottom body of a car vs previously over 70 parts!!), they are manufactuing there own batteries and battery prices continue to decline and more...
the manufacturing advantage that tesla has is being truly seen its full effect now.
i own nearly 100% in tesla and just opened a position on ARKG cause they are going to CURE DISEASE.

Also they can get sued for making false affirmations about future performancemmcmonster wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 8:55 amVery nice. In 2020 we went up 7x annual expenses.
Side note: Why doesn't the Vanguard app give a projected return rate for a 1 year period (or for a period less than a year)?
For instance, if I use the Vanguard app and put a custom range of 1/2020-12/2020, the app will tell me the market gains and income return for the range but won't give me a rate of return.
1. Shouldn't it give a rate of return for any time period, no matter how short?
2. In the case of my example, it's a 1 year period. Shouldn't it give the rate of return for the year?
3. If you set the range for YTD (year to date), shouldn't it give a rate of return for the year to date?
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
Vanguard and others measure personal performance using Internal Rate of Return, but I think the numbers are annualized - meaning that the numbers are based on 1 year of performance.
Annualizing the numbers is like calculating ERA (Earned Run Average) in baseball. For example, if the starting pitcher has 1 earned run against him and only pitches for 1 inning, his ERA is 9.0 (in a 9 inning game).
Update: It's winter. Annualizing the numbers is like GAA (Goals Against Average) in hockey. One goal against in one period of play is a GAA of 3.0 (in a 60 minute game).

Bah Humbug! I'm up exactly 0.00% YTD....
But then again, the markets haven't opened yet in 2021!
In 2020, total return was a little under 17% on an allocation of 75/25.
