I like Meryl Streep. I’m hard pressed, however, to think of a Nicholas Cage film that I liked viewing once, much less twice.

Good point, I agree. I think casting Nicholas Cage as a serious actor simply doesn't work and it ruined the movie for me.

Is that based on a book that is a sequel to "The Killer Angels", and which I think formed the basis for Gettysburg movie?

This is based on the Vietnam war and the actions of a para rescue
Airman and subsequently the people he saved, to award him the Medal of Honor.

The Hustler (1961) on Hulu

(for those who may not know...)
A pool shark's travels from one seedy playing room to another, lead him to a potentially life-changing showdown with the legendary Minnesota Fats.

Paul Newman, Piper Laurie, George C. Scott, Jackie Gleason
______

Excellent movie that somehow got better in the years since I’ve last seen it.

A Bullet for Joey (1955) Edward G. Robinson, Geo. Raft, Audrey Totter

In Montreal (Canada), a police inspector slowly discovers a plot to kidnap a nuclear physicist, American mobsters, foreign spies, and a blonde seductress, are all involved.

Unless you really like Edward G. Robinson and/or George Raft (I do), don’t waste your time. Wooden acting, low energy, and unbelievable plot.

I streamed it on Roku.

The Hummingbird Project - Netflix
The Hummingbird Project is a 2018 Canadian-Belgian drama thriller film about high-frequency trading and ultra-low latency direct market access, written and directed by Kim Nguyen produced by Pierre Even at Item 7. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård, Salma Hayek, and Michael Mando.

National Treasure. I had never seen it, but I had previously recorded it, and given recent comments in this topic I decided to move it up in priority.
My inner-8-year-old loved it. It has a fast paced and intriguing storyline. Quite the adventure. It held my attention.
But overall it's too glossy and neat. So much suspension of disbelief is required. Too pat. The ending goes into nilspace.
I will remain fond of what it conveyed, but not of what it over-conveyed.

SuperIntelligence with Melissa McCarthy on HBO Max. Hyped in NYT and WSJ yesterday.

I don't recommend it. Didn't watch all the way.

Coincidently she's named in https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/202 ... esses.html as one of the "25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century (So Far)." That list is probably worth a thread of its own, so I won't comment.

I was a bit disappointed about this movie. Ron Howard is an excellent film maker and his direction here is too timid. I think that, considering the subject matter, he wanted to be very non-controversial.

Oh, God!

I've watched it a few times before, the last perhaps 15 years ago. Always fun. Several big name actors plus John Denver, just about perfectly cast.

Lots of good 1977 home decor, grocery store, and car visuals going on.

This would be a good triple feature in between Miracle on 34th Street and My Cousin Vinny.
We need a really good 21st century courtroom comedy.

I watched Creep last night. According to IMDB:

A young videographer answers an online ad for a one-day job in a remote town to record the last messages of a dying man. When he notices the man's odd behavior, he starts to question his intentions

It was a very good, low-budget thriller/suspense. Can't wait to watch Creep 2!

Christmas Angel 2009. Somewhat typical sad but feel good Christmas movie. It is about a man who has health issues and lives in a minimal apt building but has a bunch of money from his financial days and hires a lady to help him brighten people's Christmas times. Somewhat of a teary movie if you are one of those people.

Jailhouse Rock (1957) Elvis Presley, Judy Tyler, Mickey Shaughnessy

After serving time for manslaughter, young Vince Everett becomes a teenage rock star.

It’s a pretty bad film, only a showcase for Elvis, though it’s supposed to be one of his better films. It didn’t need to be good, his fans would’ve bought tickets anyway. I was surprised to see it was filmed in CinemaScope, it’s a B&W film. The dance number for the song “Jailhouse Rock” was pretty good.

Elvis’s co-star was killed in a traffic accident three days after it wrapped. For this reason Elvis refused to see the film.

Of interest only as an historical artifact.

I watched it on broadcast TV.

I recently watched Creep 2, which was a very good and creepy followup to Creep.

Witness for the Prosecution (2017), watched on Acorn streaming. Agatha Christie in a more serious mood, no tongue in cheek lightheartedness.

It stars Toby Jones, who really was the star of this show. He was magnificent.

Agatha Christie certainly is the queen of mystery and plot twisting.

Originally shown as a TV miniseries but shown here in total as a movie. It works well this way.
