What YouTube channels do you watch?

Post by batpot »

I have greatly reduced my TV watching, but have ramped up watching various YouTube channels, and have found surprisingly high quality content.
Channels I subscribe to:
Kurzgesagt - In A Nutshell (conceptual science, and psychology videos)
ElectroBoom (informative and funny experiments with electricity)
Tom Scott (technology, history, and linguistics)
CGP Grey (history)
Adam Ragusea (food and food history)

edited to add descriptions

quite a few others based on specific interests

Are there good channels out there? What about other good streaming services?

If you're in to cooking and history, I'd recommend TastingHistory, which is a hobbyist's channel (he's neither a chef nor a historian) with a pretty good way of making food history fun.

If you're into antiques and hobbyist car remodels, then I'd recommend Curiosity Incorporated, which is a Canadian antique shop owner who likes to restore cars and motorcycles in his garage. He shoots a lot of videos on his estate sale and barn yard finds, plus remodels at his store and even a series on restoring the house of a Canadian pottery artist.

"What YouTube channels do you watch?"

I do not subscribe to any Youtube channels. Zero.

I occasionally look at random Youtube posts.

I don’t subscribe to any channels, but I often watch “ralfydotcom” for scotch (and other liquor) reviews. He is my go-to guy for that. 8-)

Kurzgesagt - Top notch quality science.
Epic History TV - The best in its class for European/Western history.
Historia Civilis - No better channel on the late Roman Republic.
Caspian Report - A nuanced, objective view of modern geopolitics covering a wide range of countries.
PBS Eons / PBS Spacetime - more top notch quality science, often covering current, evolving discoveries.
Ben Felix - Modern Finance.

As you can see, I mostly use Youtube as an escape from reality...nothing too serious going on with the channels I'm subscribed to. Like others, I hardly watch TV anymore and find Youtube videos easy to consume in bite sized pieces. Lots of great suggestions so far from others, so looks like the number of channels I subscribe to will be going up!

Omeleto.

Seemingly limitless quantity of outstanding short films, focused on superb storytelling. Curated collection: films must have played at an Oscar-qualifying, BAFTA-qualifying, or similar top-tier festival. A new one posts everyday; the archives are vast. Lengths from 5 to 30 minutes; most are 15-20. All are very high quality; this is not where anyone can post homemade movies.

Award winners, emergent filmmakers: many American, but from all over the world (including subtitles). Well acted, beautiful cinematography. Every genre: drama, comedy, documentaries, sci-fi, romance, animation, even horror. Full gamut of human experiences: entertaining, thought-provoking, funny, heart-warming, sexy, creepy, weird.

Anything to do with food, guns, or Norm Macdonald. I have yet to find a channel that features all three.

My favorite for each:

1) Food: Food Wishes with Chef John
2) Guns: Hickok45
3) Norm MacDonald: I'm Not Norm

I have 150+ subscriptions so I'll just mention one.

Sailing SV Delos

Sailing With SV Delos! This is our story, a story of four souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing and travel and adventure. But it's also a story about meeting amazing people and making life long friends. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love.

Medlife Crisis - Smart, funny science and medical topics

Adam Savage’s Tested - Adam Savage, doing stuff.

Seth’s Bike Hacks - I don’t even own a mountain bike. The content is that good.

Athlean-X - watching this is killing your gains.

Alton Brown - Quarantine Quitchen is profane and hilarious. AB and his wife Elizabeth get drunk and cook dinner at home.

Jordan Harrod - Topics in artificial intelligence explained in 10 minute increments. She should have a bigger following than she does.

Dr. John Campbell - A British nursing professor with too much time on his hands right now. Extensive coverage of pretty much everything he can think of related to COVID, sometimes twice a day. I don’t always agree with his opinions, but he backs them up with real science, which is refreshing.

In the evenings I usually plop down in front of the TV and check out what YouTube is recommending for me. Sometimes I change up the recommendations with a search. And if there is a channel that I want to keep my eye on, I may subscribe.

My subscriptions generally cover travel/cruising (Tips for Travellers) and language study. The general recommendations are often news/politics and talking heads.

Primitive Technology. By far my favorite YouTube channel. Run by a guy in Australia who bought some land in the woods. From the description:

"Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc."

One of the great things about the channel is there is absolutely no dialog, nothing spoken. Turn captions on for descriptions about what's happening, that's it.

I was never much into YouTube until it was easily accessible on my Firesticks. It is so much more pleasurable to watch on a tv compared to on my phone or computer. I am not going to list specific channels, but most correspond directly with my interests. Sometimes videos are recommended that I had no idea I would be interested in but am. Most of the channels I watch have to do with construction, design, architecture, cooking, bbq, comedy, technology, etc. I find new channels through recommendations in YouTube which tend to be pretty good.
