weekender bag?

Post by amw123 »

My Travelpro small duffel bag ( the size of a medium gym bag/weekender bag) just broke (the zipper is destroyed.) Does anybody know of good quality weekender bags for a reasonable price?

Probably too many ways to go without some restricting requirements. Any budget limit? Duffle, backpack, sling?

I would pick a Thule Sling that was the right size for your weekender goals.

Not sure if it's reasonable in price for you or not, but I've used a Tumi bag similar to this one (https://www.tumi.com/p/framed-soft-duffel-01084504629) for about 15 years and love it.

We just bought this one. The quality is very good and the price is low.

No idea what your needs or price point are, but I’ve used this bag extensively (airline pilot) for about 9 months now and I’ve been very pleased.

If you like the bag other than the destroyed zipper, it is a relatively cheap fix for a seamstress to sew in a new heavy duty zipper. I've had that done several times over the years to various things.

I like the duffel style and it is for small overnight trips so it should be on the smaller side, also preferably under $50 but could go a bit higher

I recently picked up this Adidas Defender III Small Duffel for under $40 at Dick's Sporting goods.

https://www.amazon.com/adidas-Defender- ... th=1&psc=1

I carry my flute gear in it, but it's the perfect size for the gym or a weekend tryst.

Thats a great size, but since I usually wear more formal dress it would look a bit wierd going out with a suit and a sparkly pink adidas bag LOL( I know that I can get other colors but it doesn't seem "dressy" enough for me)

The Tom Binh Aeronaut 30 looks like a much more expensive version of the
E-Bags TLS Mother Lode Weekender Convertible. I have this bag and it is the bag that I have received compliments for on 3 separate occasions: from TSA staff, airline counter staff, and passengers standing in line with me. This bag is always on sale, so don't pay list price. I think it goes for $70 - $80.

I have a Ralph Lauren Polo bag that I found on eBay for $10. It fits clothes and such for a weekend and is stylish too.

Frank Clegg. Handmade in the USA. Not cheap, but you'll never buy another bag again. My Frank Clegg briefcase is genuinely one of the best purchases I've ever made, and I'm not someone who usually splurges on things like this.

Define "reasonable price".

I've been very happy with the quality of both Tom Bihn https://www.tombihn.com/ and Red Oxx https://www.redoxx.com/.

I would rather pay a little more up-front for a bag that will last a decade, than replace a bag every few years.

LL Bean continues to offer a wide variety of duffels. What's more. most are reasonably priced. And they're offering 20% off price for some of them right now.

I've been happy with the fabric and construction of Dakine bags. My daily backpack for the 4 years has been Dakine - used as diaper bag and carry all for whatever I need to be out and about in the city with little kids. It has taken a beating and still looks brand new. We now have Dakine luggage as well - two different size roller bags and two duffels that conveniently fold up into their own little pockets. They make a variety of shapes and sizes and have a variety of patterns to make luggage easy to spot at baggage claim.

Pre-kiddos, when we traveled lighter, we both used Kelty Redwing 2650 backpacks. When they weren't overstuffed, they would meet carry-on size restrictions. Those are still in good shape after 10 years and multiple trips abroad. I find backpacks much more convenient than duffels because I like being hands free when traveling and able to do a a hike or afternoon of sightseeing without finding a place to store my luggage.

No experience with Red Oxx but Tom Bihn is sturdy, professional appearing, and flexible. It’s often touted as the ultimate for one-bag travel. Definitely expensive but built to last and has a cult following.

Not a bag recommendation but OneBag - The Art + Science of Traveling Light is a good source for bag recommendations and packing techniques.

At $120 I thought my 50L Cotopaxi chumpi https://www.cotopaxi.com/collections/li ... 6086991562 was absurdly expensive for a duffel bag (I got it for free, from work). That bag, BTW, is built like a tank and I bet it lasts at minimum a decade. It is going on 4yrs as my daily use bag with zero signs of wear. Guess I shouldn't be too surprised that people here will pay 5-10x what I would for something as simple as a duffel.

OP, since you stated <$50, hit up your closest Ross or Burlington Coat factory, there should be a myriad of name brand sports duffels for $25 or less. They are all the same and should last several years of regular use.

I'm in the Tom Bihn cult. Well built, looks good and holds a ton of stuff.

I have the tri-star...fits in the overhead bin of any RJ and fits under the seat of a mainline aircraft. I can get 4 days of clothes and a laptop in there.

Highly recommend.

I discovered Floto Imports for nice made in Italy leather weekend bags. I've been very happy with my weekend duffle with a more retro feel. Also have a Dakine for banging about, which has been awesome.

I'm sure $300+ duffel bags are nice and all, but apparently almost everybody missed this statement from the OP.

That's because good quality at a $50 price point does not compute. :D

It's a duffel bag, what would characterize "quality" other than durability? IMO, if you can't make a $50 duffel bag last 10yrs, it isn't the bag that is the problem.

Check out some of the reviews and recommendations on this site for a very entertaining and informative take on bags

http://bagworks.co/current-bag-recommendations/

I could watch this dude review paint drying on a wall. Very funny if you aren’t offended by profanity and have seen the Big Lebowski!

I’ll throw out filson bags as well. Pricey, but it will be the last bag you ever buy.
