How do these meetings handle the desire of participants to stay anonymous? I assume if I’m interested in remaining anonymous I should skip this kind of meeting.

Leave your video turned off, and make sure your name in Zoom is set to your Bogleheads username, not your real name. Or you could use a cat filter.

... make sure your name in Zoom is set to your Bogleheads username, not your real name.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE AN ACCOUNT TO PARTICIPATE IN LOCAL MEETINGS OR ANY OF THE LIFE STAGE MEETINGS. Some chapter leaders have even met people for years at the in-person meeting and do not know their real name nor their Boglehead name (if they even have one)

You don't have to use your Bogleheads name nor your real name for Zoom as many participants never sign up for a Bogleheads account but participate in the virtual meetings. If you use zoom a lot for other things you may have your profile set to your real name, you can change this - here's how.

You can blur your background too if you want

It's best to make sure your zoom client is current. https://zoom.us/download

I can't attend because we are test driving early retirement with an extra long vacation and on Wednesday evening I will be in an RV in the blue ridge mountains. This sounds like a good group as we transition over the next year, though, so I will try to keep my eyes out for the next meeting.

No worries - it's easy to subscribe to a topic. When you are logged in, you should see a wrench icon to the right of the "post reply" button on the top or bottom of the page. Click that "wrench" icon, and select the "subscribe" option at the next menu that pops up - it should be at the very top of the list of options.

Once you do that, you'll be "subscribed" and will get notifications whenever new posts to the topic get made.

Good luck!

No longer my cohort, but in Early Retirement (age 55) I did follow the advice to do the annual Roth IRA conversions from my big-to-me tIRA/401k rollover. Now at 71, my RMDs will be only five digits and the tIRA is small enough for my low growth bond funds, while the Roth IRA with its stock funds has grown large, relative to my employed income. Thank you Bogleheads, especially Celia, for the good advice.

Morningstar's Christine Benz will outline how to safeguard your portfolio and your plan against these risk factors. She will also share her favorite in-retirement mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and discuss her model bucket portfolios geared toward retirees.

Suggestions for questions to be addressed during the Q&A are welcome and can be submitted with the RSVP below, or typed into the chat window during the meeting.

Hi. Suggestion/Question.

The "Pre Retirement/Early Retirement" label is ungainly because of the awkward and unnecessary repetition of the word "retirement."

Could it be cleaned up a bit by calling it the "Pre and Early Retirement" or the "Pre/Early Retirement" Life Stage Chapter? Reads clearer that way I think.

I know it's not particularly important but thought I would put it out there. Thanks.

Slides and the meeting chat from last night's meeting are now posted in the blog. See: Virtual online chapter presentations

All personally identifiable information has been removed from the chat.

The YouTube channel will be updated when the video is ready.

Fixed: Mentioned last night, there was a problem viewing the chat files on a mobile device. The chat files were in a Microsoft Word file format, so perhaps there's a compatibility issue. I changed all of the chat files to PDF format, which is guaranteed to work everywhere (two files).

The chat file links were changed on the blog and where they appeared in the YouTube show notes (description).

Just a quick thank you to everyone who made the presentation possible! Well done and very informative.

The one area that really surprised me was Christine being unfamiliar with VPW or TPAW approaches for Retirement decumulation. Especially so since she is in an active research project on Retirement Decumulation strategies.

Did this puzzle anyone else?

No, that didn't surprise me, probably because I had never heard of them either (not that I'm an expert). I will have to look into that.

That's because the terminology is used by Bogleheads forum members. The concept has been around for a while, but not the terminology. It's gotten traction in the finance industry, but is not generally known. The method, yes. "VPW" as an acronym, no.

See: Variable percentage withdrawal, which was developed by longinvest. Actually, he's Canadian and started at our sister Canadian site. He then brought the concept here. See: Variable percentage withdrawal - finiki, the Canadian financial wiki

The support thread: Variable Percentage Withdrawal (VPW)

Also see: Amortization based withdrawal

This might be a reasonable explanation. Guess I am a bit frustrated to not see much analysis outside of BH on this approach. I was hoping Morningstar would have taken a good look at an Amortization based approach as part of their research project.

Does Christine have a BH user? Perhaps I could query her directly on her thinking?

I just watched Christine Benz's video. I too was surprised and dismayed at her lack of awareness of the VPW and ABW methods.

She mentioned her passion for Bogleheads and considers herself an expert in retirement portfolio withdrawals... is a part of a team at Morningstar researching retirement financial planning strategies. Yet, she had never heard of VPW or ABW methods.

I hope this doesn't sound too harsh since the intent is not to criticize her personally; however, it makes me question her curiosity, research, and (therefore) expertise regarding portfolio withdrawal strategies.

The Pre/Early Retirement Life Stage chapter will be hosting a meeting on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, on Zoom, starting 7 PM (Central).

5 pm Pacific
6 pm Mountain
7 pm Central
8 pm Eastern

The presentation will be on "Pre/Early retirement health care planning with a 2021 update". This information was originally presented by the Chicago Virtual Bogleheads group in February, 2021. This meeting will present the same information, but with the changes to the ACA subsidy rules in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 which was passed in March, 2021.

The presentation should appeal to people nearing retirement and before Medicare (age 65) - would also appeal to people contemplating leaving their corporate jobs to become self employed.

If you are wondering about your health care options and missed the February meeting, and/or want to learn about how the recent law change affects things, this meeting is for you.

You can RSVP for the meeting and submit questions here...

All responses are anonymous.

The Zoom link will be posted a week before the meeting.

The Pre/Early Retirement and Retirement Life Stage chapters will be hosting a meeting on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, on Zoom, starting 7 PM (Central).

5 pm Pacific
6 pm Mountain
7 pm Central
8 pm Eastern

Guest speaker Jill Steinberg - "Successful Retirement: From Retiring to Rewiring"

Zoom presentation/meeting

The Topic is: Making the retirement experience successful and purposeful. Note: this is not a financial discussion, but rather a discussion of how to prepare yourself for a happy and fulfilling retirement.

The format of the meeting is as follows: First, a question and answer interview/discussion with Jill Steinberg and a host. The approximately 20 questions will include a sampling of those pre-submitted on the RSVP form before November 3, along with some questions by the hosts. The interview portion will be followed by a Q&A session of approximately one hour. The questions for the Q&A will be a combination of those pre-submitted questions not chosen for the interview, questions pre-submitted after November 3, questions entered into the chat window during the presentation, and questions asked directly by participants during the Q&A portion.

Targeted audience: Pre/Early Retirement and Retirement Life Stages (but others always welcome)

You can RSVP for the meeting and submit questions here...

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link

All responses are anonymous.

The Zoom link will be posted on the Bogleheads Calendar of Events a week before the meeting.
