Re: Happy 97th Birthday, Taylor Larimore
Happy birthday to the King of the Bogleheads from The Prince of the Bogleheads. I've told you on numerous occasions that this Prince has no desire to be King, so that means you're going to have to continue to stick around for a long, long time, since I have good genes.
It's been an exciting and rewarding journey, working together over these past 23 years. For this Marine, it's been a real honor to have had you, a paratrooper, as a partner. I think we've made a difference and hopefully left the world a little better place for our efforts. IMO, that's the best one can hope others will say about then when their time is up.

Taylor, thanks so much for your service to both your country and the Boglehead community.
Your books “Guide to Investing” and “Three Fund Portfolio” are classics. I have read them and told my adult children to read them.
Happy Birthday! And may God bless you.

Re: Happy 97th Birthday, Taylor Larimore
For those unfamiliar with the Battle of the Bulge, some context for why Mr. Larimore's service is so highly regarded might be welcome. In December of 1944, it was the twilight of the war in Europe. Allied High Command largely thought that Germany was permanently on the defensive. The Ardennes forest was expected to be a quiet zone (the second time in the war this prediction proved wrong), and so the units stationed there were mostly badly battered units scheduled for refit and resupply. Then, on the 16th of December, this happened (red arrows are German army advances):
The intent of the German army was to sweep the Americans back through Holland to Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe and the source of Allied supply. The 101st Airborne was quickly brought into Bastogne, an important road nexus, to hold it. Bastogne was surrounded on December 22, and the airborne units, despite being poorly equipped to fight armored divisions, held the town. Mr. Larimore was in the middle of this:
(These beautiful maps are from Akhil Kadidal's blog)
Bastogne did not fall to the Germans; the American soldiers held the town until they were relieved by the US 4th Armored Division on December 27.
When Mr. Larimore advises people here to "Stay the Course," it's hard for me not to think that this advice means perhaps a bit more coming from him than it might from other people.
Happy birthday, Mr. Larimore. Thank you for your service, yes; thank you also for teaching others what service is.

Happy birthday, Taylor! I don't offend you addressing you with your first name, only. Every once in a while, when we want to stray off into active management, you always have a bunch of wise quotes to keep us index investors on track

And after this post, I'll have renewed conviction in suggesting to "stay the course". As Gattamelata pointed out, this likely had extra meaning from your perspective. But "stay the course" is arguably good advice for many of life's challenging situations.Gattamelata wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 1:02 pm When Mr. Larimore advises people here to "Stay the Course," it's hard for me not to think that this advice means perhaps a bit more coming from him than it might from other people.

A Very Happy Birthday, Taylor. A gentle man and a gentleman. In addition to your wide knowledge and expertise, I have always been very impressed on how you have handled the rare nasty criticism email. Your magnanimity and response style are models for all of us on the Boglehead Forum. Thank you .

Re: Happy 97th Birthday, Taylor Larimore
In 2002 I retired from MegaCorp taking a lump sum distribution of my pension and transferred my 401K funds into a Vanguard IRA. Since I had invested in Vanguards Total Stock Market fund previously and had followed the Diehards forum for a while Vanguard seemed like a reasonable choice. I did have some anxiety and analysis paralysis I wasn't sure how to allocate the funds so I posted on the Diehards forum asking for suggestions. Taylor and others responded with suggestions and I went with a consensus of thoughts for allocations. It is interesting to note that Taylors recommendations although very good were not what I would expect he would recommend at this time. Even the experts are allowed to change their minds. So here is is 18 years later and I still have the VG account (although grown somewhat), follow the Diehards (now the Bogleheads) and I still look forward to words of wisdom from Taylor.
Happy Birthday Taylor!
And thank you Kathleen for your post and writeup and opportunity recognize Taylor who has given so much to this forum.

Happy Birthday, Taylor.
Your service in WW II made a difference for all your countrymen. There is a reason they call it "the greatest generation" and you fit the bill.
In addition, your advice and the bogleheads forum have made a tremendous difference in my life and family's.
I think the only tribute that really sticks is "Pay it forward". You did, I will and I think many others here will as well.

You have indeed made your corner of the world and beyond a better place. Thank you for defending democracy as a young man. Your generation sacrificed so much so that freedom would prevail.
Your wisdom, fore thought, and knowledge have enabled my wife and I to retire and pursue our dreams on the water, thank you.
Happy Birthday sir, we wish you much happiness this coming year.
