Yes, happy birthday. But isn’t it a bit premature? This is 6/22 not 9/22 :confused

Her subject line is wrong. Quite certain Mel’s birthday is today.

6/22 is Summer solstice, which features the maximum day length and minimum night
9/22 is September equinox, which is 50/50

It seems that Mel is favoring a long day.

Depends how you define “day”. Is it daylight hours or midnight to midnight or sunrise to sunrise or sunset to sunset?

Actually, the summer solstice this year was on 6/20.

It can be on any day from 6/20 to 6/22 depending on the year.

If Mel’s birthday is 9/22, it is the culmination of a three month celebration of his contributions to Boglehead Nation. :D

Amen to that! Who knew 3% - 3.6% fixed would be so awesome. Mid-caps did fine for me as well.

Mel, hope you have a great BD, and many, many more! :beer

June 22 is in the middle of the year - right where one would expect to find Mel with his Unloved Mid-Caps 8-)

We wish you a very happy birthday, Mel, and many more to come. :D

You have been so important for all of us in learning how to invest. And also, thank you for moderating this most wonderful forum, for handling the local chapters work, and for putting together and running the wonderful Bogleheads Conferences for almost 20 years. It was no small effort on your part. :happy

Hi Eveyone:

It's been a really busy day and this is the first time I've had a chance to log on to the forum. What a nice surprise to see so many good wishes for my birthday (yes, it is 6/22).

It's been a real joy and a labor of love, helping to create and build up the Bogleheads Community. Starting with our first Conference with Jack Bogle in 2000 thru our latest Conference in 2019, I've had the good fortune to meet so many of our forum members in person, and each and every one of you have been so very kind to me. I cherish the time we've spent together.

During the Conference book signings, I got to chat with Bogleheads who flatter me by telling me that the work we've done over the years has allowed them to send their kids to college or retire early or comfortably. That's really heady stuff, knowing that our work has had a positive impact on so many others. Hearing those stories makes it all worthwhile.

Special thanks to all of the other Administrators and Moderators who keep this forum on track. They're really the unsung heroes of the Community. They work tirelessly behind the scenes, and while you may not see how hard they work, I can, since I'm working behind the scenes with them.

Hopefully this Community we've all built together will survive and thrive long after Taylor and I have moved on to once again be with Jack Bogle. Its mission is too important to not continue, so I beseech each and every one of you to please continue to do your part to make sure it does.

Again, thanks for all the good wishes. You've made my day!

Glad you got in on the I Bonds when the getting was good. Those oldies are certainly worth their weight in gold in this crazy low-to-no interest rate environment.

Fortunately I took my own advice and loaded up the truck back then.

Considering the source, I'm extremely proud and flattered to have been given that title by Jack at our first get-together with him in Miami in 2000.

Bogleheads:

Mel and I became acquainted in the early days of the Morningstar forums (late 90s) when we were both trying to encourage investors to follow the Wisdom of Jack Bogle (primarily indexing which had not yet been generally accepted).

On March 10, 2000, Mel and I put together our first Boglehead Conference with Mr. Bogle at my home in Miami. We invited everyone on the forum but only 21 came. Mel put together a Conference Team and we have had 18 sold-out Conference's since (none this year due to the coronavirus).

Mel and I have a running joke. I was an Army Paratrooper and he was a U.S. Marine. We argue who is braver, but we both agree that we can depend on the other to cover our back. I've never had a better friend.

Jack Bogle named me "King of the Bogleheads" and named Mel "Prince of the Bogleheads." Unfortunately, Jack got it backwards.

Best wishes.

Happy birthday, Mel.

I have been a Vanguard investor since 2000, but didn't find the Boglehead community until late 2019 when I retired. Oh yes, I do regret the early days at Morningstar and here that I missed out on but it is the next 20 years that I happily look forward to as a Boglehead member.

Thank you for all your contributions and sound thinking.

May you have many happy and healthy returns, Mr. Lindauer.

Despite all my kidding about the Marines having to rescue the paratroopers when they got in over their head, Taylor knows that I love him dearly, and I couldn't think of anyone I'd rather have covering my back in any kind of troubling situation.

I once told Taylor to let me know if my joking around about the Marines and the paratroopers was offending him in any way and I'd stop. He replied that if I stopped, he wouldn't be my friend any longer. He's a real ace, as most posters here realize.

Ever since Jack dubbed Taylor "The King of the Bogleheads" and me "The Prince of the Bogleheads", I've repeatedly told Taylor that I have no desire to be "King", so he has to stick around as long as I do.

Love you, my dear friend, despite the fact that you chose the wrong branch of the service. :D
