Bogleheads:
Mel and I became acquainted in the early days of the Morningstar forums (late 90s) when we were both trying to encourage investors to follow the Wisdom of Jack Bogle (primarily indexing which had not yet been generally accepted).
On March 10, 2000, Mel and I put together our first Boglehead Conference with Mr. Bogle at my home in Miami. We invited everyone on the forum but only 21 came. Mel put together a Conference Team and we have had 18 sold-out Conference's since (none this year due to the coronavirus).
Mel and I have a running joke. I was an Army Paratrooper and he was a U.S. Marine. We argue who is braver, but we both agree that we can depend on the other to cover our back. I've never had a better friend.
Jack Bogle named me "
King of the Bogleheads" and named Mel "
Prince of the Bogleheads." Unfortunately, Jack got it backwards.
Best wishes.
Taylor
Jack Bogle's Words if wisdom: "The great game of life is not about money; it is about doing your best to join the battle to build anew ourselves, our communities, our nation, and our world."
Despite all my kidding about the Marines having to rescue the paratroopers when they got in over their head, Taylor knows that I love him dearly, and I couldn't think of anyone I'd rather have covering my back in any kind of troubling situation.
I once told Taylor to let me know if my joking around about the Marines and the paratroopers was offending him in any way and I'd stop. He replied that if I stopped, he wouldn't be my friend any longer. He's a real ace, as most posters here realize.
Ever since Jack dubbed Taylor "The King of the Bogleheads" and me "The Prince of the Bogleheads", I've repeatedly told Taylor that I have no desire to be "King", so he has to stick around as long as I do.
Love you, my dear friend, despite the fact that you chose the wrong branch of the service.
