Age: 48.
Retirement date: June 25th, 2021.
Thank you for the online session!
Way to go, Elena!! You're not only on this Awesome Roll Call, but you're in the running for the Very Coveted Award as The Youngest Retiree!!

Being the youngest retiree, however, has its "uh, what do I do now?" moments  What are your plans for the next 50 years? We wish you all good things in your retirement. :D

Happy you enjoy the BH online meetings - please join your fellow BHs at future virtual online meetings - here is the Calendar of Events and at the bottom of the calendar, you'll find links to the recordings of past meetings, the BH Speaker Series, and Rick Ferri's BH on Investing Podcasts.
Thank you, Miriam2!

If you read a long "can I retire" post I wrote some time ago, this has been in the works for a while. Family illness and not being allowed to work remotely any longer set it all in motion. I will take some time to adjust, but I have always been self-motivated, so I will probably write yet another book after I relocate. For now, I have transitioned to primary caretaker of two 80+ persons, a cat and my dog, and I will be doing some "revenge travel" this summer.

Thank you for the link, and for the time you take in maintaining this thread.

Elena.

Not leaving without that severance package, not sure what more I need to do to get laid off :-)
I would think late 50s and refusal to go along with most major corporate changes would do it, but as of now have only
a notice of what I must do by 12/31/2021 to retain employment, something I do not plan to do !
Hmm - this is really quite a problem, the failure to get fired . . . :confused

Well, we once had a Boglehead who "accidentally retired," filled in the wrong paperwork or something like that, then decided, OK, what the heck, rather than correct it, I'll just retire. And another time we had a Boglehead who "might have just added" himself to the retirement class, but his employer wouldn't let him resign. Now you've done everything you could to get laid off, but they won't fire you :annoyed

OK . . . here's what you do . . . keep this lovely pillow on your desk at work and take naps whenever you want during the day :D They'll either get the idea or we'll have to move on to more obvious tactics.

Hi Miriam -

My new career is "self-employed investor", just like Warren Buffett!

I manage my portfolio and dispense advice to anyone who asks. I do not report to a workplace and no one can fire me. It keeps my mind occupied and me motivated. You can only watch so much MSNBC and CNN per day.

Everyone needs a purpose in life. I think Jack Bogle said that.

Warren has more and bigger assets than I do but we are both investors. Warren owns See's Candy and I own Hershey. Hershey has a line of sugar-free chocolates (sweetened with stevia) which are a diabetic's dream come true.
Financial decisions based on emotion often turn out to be bad decisions.

This is amazing pro bono work 😀. Nice job Miriam.
Amazing to see all these names/ages line up. 5 to 7 more years before I'm eligible to be added to the list!

At that point I am currently projecting that I will be at 99.9% of the highest estimate of my "number". Close enough!

I am not planning to make the final call (putting in the paperwork) until about 01 Aug though. A lot can happen between now and then, but those are phantom fears (I keep telling myself.)

Thanks to COVID-19 and a good accrual rate, I will need to take about 10 weeks of vacation between now and then (will not be paid out, have to use it up). I think I can handle that though.

I'll save my thanks to Bogleheads for when the day actually occurs, but I very much appreciate everything that got me to this decision! :happy
17 days out from my decision point. Currently projecting 101.3% of enough.

And yet the mind plays games.

Looking through some "One More Year" discussions, the idea that retirement is a new phase of life similar to entering the workforce really resonates. When you were just starting out, who knew how it would really go? Same as retirement, except you are older and (hopefully) wiser and have more resources. At the different ages you control different things.

Also, there are some really good fishing pictures in the "Class of 2014" thread. :P

And in addition, I recently found out that my company does pay out any accrued vacation time at separation. Dozens of coworkers over the years have sworn that that's not the case. Go figure. So I did. It does turn out that, at least for me, taking the vacation results in a greater pension accrual than the paid-out money would equivalently provide, so it actually does make the most financial sense to burn the vacation before you go.

Not quite there yet. I am leaning in more towards doing it. Why else did I save so much? There's nothing forcing me out. I have pad in my budget. Bogleheads taught me how to do the math right, and to account for many subsidiary concerns.

It's an 01 Aug decision point to take effect 01 Nov. My original estimate was 01 Aug 2022 retirement. How much is an extra 9 months worth? Probably a lot. The market has been good. Yet what the market giveth, the market may taketh away...and I'll be faced with that certainty after I retire as well. It's not all a logical decision, too many unknowns.

I post mostly to goad myself to do the right thing.

Ahh - deep reflections on the old esoteric meaning and purpose of life 8-) Well I certainly agree that chocolate is high on the list, also not reporting to a workplace and being a self-employed investor is right up there with chocolate.

Interesting discussion. I agree, but then, do we ever know how things go? Opportunities come, doors open (or close), we need to keep our eyes open to seize opportunities and avoid calamities, and it's good to have financial resources to handle what comes.

Oh yes, those are siamond and his sturgeons 8-) He spends all day wrestling with them, hauls them in, takes pix, then releases them and they swim away in a huff. Then siamond goes home and tells his wife he spent the day catching huuuge fish, but let them go. Actually, I kind of busted my left shoulder while casting at 80+ yards to reach very deep spots where those sturgeons hide! But I do keep fishing. This also works great to attract the attention of young pretty ladies. Here is proof (this was taken last fall, the fish was a little over 30 pounds). The mom (who took the picture) was grinning ear to ear too.

I submitted this cool picture to an online competition and won second place. Since I have a few of those medals already, I decided that the young supermodel should get the rewards. Mom did explain to her that those are NOT chocolate medals! (and mom did agree that I could post those pictures on a public forum, by the way).

See, tooluser? Why grind one more year at work when you can have such magical moments, being free to roam wherever you want and do whatever you want... We have only one life and things do go downhill after a certain age (cf. stupid shoulder!).

Thank you, siamond, for your fishing update, and your secret for attracting pretty ladies. 8-) We have always been impressed with your fishing prowess and those fish are really huuuuge! Quite a wild retirement adventure, although very pleasant to be outside having a good time and enjoying nature. Please take care of your busted shoulder - we wish you many years ahead enjoying your retirement :happy

Hi Miriam2,

I see most of us have our retirement ages on the list (but not me!). I just wasn’t thinking about that upon joining, even though it was the magic allowable retirement number at work. So you have my consent to stick a “(65)” after my user name :D Also Miriam THX for your efforts—it’s been plain enjoyable!

You're welcome! and I stuck a (65) after your Roll Call listing - it's a good age to retire. 8-)

Miriam2,

Please add me/us to the roll call. My husband gave notice today till the end of August. Wow.
I've been in grad school for the past year with no work responsibilities. I did not feel officially retired. Until we retired.

If they offered him a package, ie access to health care he will stay until February 2022. But right now the date is August 31st.

We are 52 and 57. And as with many - healthcare is our biggest worry. Looking forward to a lot of hikes and long walks.

We added you to the roster as self-reporting Officially Retired - and if your circumstances change, just let us know and we re-boot 8-)
"Lots of hikes and long walks" - sounds like the most pleasurable stress-free times. We wish you a wonderful retirement.

Hello Miriam,

I have an update. Earlier this week I provided the Firm with notice of my impending retirement. My last day of work will be August 31st. :D The first day of retirement will be September 1. After 34 years of practicing law, I will need to figure out what I want to do when I grow up and shift my mindset from being a saver to a spender. I will be 62, by the way.

I'm not sure it is okay to post this here, but I had a success story related to our recent retire (on Jul 9th). We dashed off the SSA-44
(https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-44-ext.pdf) form to let Medicare know DH had retired and we would have a lower income for 2021 (for IRMAA). We received a determination in our favor on the 23rd of Jul! I would not have known to do that if not for the Bogleheads board, so I must say, "Thanks!" (And for all the other stuff I have learned about planning for retirement here).

We initiated a 401k rollover to DH's IRAs yesterday. That made it feel real. (Like-he ain't kidding, he's not going back. :D )

Thanks for the update, ClaycordJCA! After 34 years of practicing law, for sure it's time to toss away all that lawyer-thinking and shift your mindset! You're going to enjoy your free days and the opportunity to make new plans for new adventures. We wish you a wonderful stress-relieving retirement and hope you enjoy spending a little :dollar on good things for yourself :D

I am resetting my retirement glideslope back to the original date of 01 Aug 2022. Only 9 more months from 01 Nov 2021, so not OMY!

I looked more closely at the time between retirement and selling my house to move to a new area, and found that though the money works out fine nominally, in a major market downturn I would not have the room to cut expenses that I will have after I move. Rationally, I'm sure I would be okay, but my gut tells me to wait a bit and cash-flow some of the house sale improvement expenses while still employed. Meanwhile my pension will continue to increase in value. There is also a quirk in my retiree healthcare premium that makes it about $10k more valuable to retire on 01 Aug than any other day of the year, so once I am into 2022, I might as well go until 01 Aug.

So, see you in the Class of 2022 thread! And who knows, I might end up back here.

I gave my 90 day retirement notice several weeks ago. I finally hit my number (40 years with my employer)! :happy

But, a contracting opportunity that I wasn't planning on has popped up. I might be working again for a bit. They offer part-time to full time WFH.

Yeah! I did it!

I did give notice for July but my boss talked me into going part time. Still not enjoying the job. So I'm going to give notice again when I get back from vacation. Tentative end date is Dec 3rd.

Miriam,

Please adjust my date. Instead of November, my last day was actually last week on 9/8. The sale of my business went through a bit sooner than I originally anticipated so I got to leave a couple months early! I'm just 48 but this job had run me into the ground in more ways than I realized. A huge weight has already been lifted and I'm excited about the upcoming vacations and increased time to be spent with family!

Many thanks for your work on this thread, Miriam!

Miriam, please add me to the 2021 Roll Call :happy I retired yesterday, 9/17/2021 at 60 (almost 61), joining my 63 year old husband who retired a few years ago. My job made it hard to take much time off except during specific times of year, so I'm excited about more flexibility for visiting the kids and the occasional vacation. Looking forward to reading, walking, volunteering and trying some new things.

Hey everyone.

Just found this topic and wanted to chime in that my wife retired from the military in mid-July with a good life-long pension as well as a healthy TSP balance. Now she can be married to me instead of the DoD. :happy

I however am a small business owner with no concrete plans to retire yet as I like what I do. (Plus my wife wants me to even out the earnings since I couldn't do as well as her with moving around every few years. :P )

I retired unexpectedly early this month at the age of 57. I do not expect to have another job again. I am still trying to figure out what to do with my life. At this time, I am just happy to do nothing.
