Hello San Francisco Bay Area Diehards!

Next Bogleheads Meeting: Thursday December 19, 2019 7pm.

Topic:   Investment Policy Statement: What, Why, and How?
By our Member:  Sock Cheng Lewin-Koh

Every investor could potentially benefit from having an investment policy statement. It provides the foundation for all future investment decisions to be made by an investor. It serves as a guidepost, identifies goals and creates a systematic review process. The IPS is intended to keep investors focused on their objectives during short-term swings in the market and provides a baseline from which to monitor investment performance of the overall portfolio, as well as the performance of individual fund managers.

I would be interested in sharing a discussion on muni strategy with bogleheads
building on what I’ve learned here from grabiner and others.

I have never gone to a seminar hosted by an investment firm since I get my advice here to keep expenses low. I admit that I get that weird feeling I get when the person at Costco offers you advice on wine selection In the wine aisles. Yes, I like wine and Costco tends to have the best value, but...what is your motivation? lol

So, please take my questioning with a grain of salt because I appreciate you organizing this... but, what should we expect to hear about Nuveen and Schwab’s products and services? Has anyone worked with them before and can share how they stack up to a Boglehead approach?

Should we expect a hard sell on their funds and their AUM and Variable Annuity products and services? Soft sell? Discussion on vanguard muni index funds?

Is this a Boglehead event that they are invited to? Or is it their event that we are invited to?

About how many people attend? Can we attend anonymously? If not, will they be calling us asking for appointments afterward? Is it a chat between attendees, or more of a sit back and listen to what they say and learn from them?

This is an informational event to learn about Bonds, and Tax Free Bonds with lots of Q&A and minimal selling.
There is not a specific fund they are trying to sell us.

Last month we had a Fidelity rep help calm down all the folks on the video conference.
The bond and muni bond markets had a big hiccup recently, so they can help educate us on what went on.

No selling. Someone asked actually them to tell us what's new at Fidelity.

You can always call them on the carpet if something is sketchy. Or quiz their knowledge.

We usually have about 20 or so folks in our meetings. This chapter has been running for over a year.
You can sign up and use any email address you want.

This is NOT an event you hear about on the radio!

Honestly, I struggle with this. If you have another one with just bogleheads, that would be fun. I would be happy to share how I analyze muni index funds as a regular bogleheader and I would love to hear what everyone else is doing. I’m sure I could learn a lot.

I am just leery. Maybe I shouldn’t be.

Benson Huang’s dossier shows he sells variable annuities and, well, that sends a message.

Sorry. I probably sound like I’m coming off a little snooty. I don’t mean to be difficult.

Nance,

I attended yesterday evening’s Webinar and thought it was well done. Focused on Muni Funds, current market conditions, risks and rewards. Not a sales presentation.

Thanks for setting it this up!

Gotta say, I am loving the online meetings— makes it much easier to attend and learn.
