Master Thread for Metro Boston's Chapter
Master Thread for Metro Boston's Chapter
Seems that we have no master thread for Boston and surroundings. So let's open one.

Re: Master Thread for Boston (MA) and surroundings
There was a successful meeting a little while ago in Burlington (MA), which I missed, stupid me. I would be very interested to participate to a new one, and would be willing to spend time organizing (or helping to organize) it. And hey winter time, new year's resolutions, plenty of time to think about financials!
Any taker for January or February? Personally, mid-February would be ideal, due to a possible (long) biz trip in January.
I believe folks settled on meeting on a Saturday last time, so this would make Feb 14th, 21st or 28th. Any preference?

Sounds great! I could do either 2/14 or 2/28 (traveling on 2/21). Could also do Jan if there is more interest then but not 1/17 or 1/24. Thank you for taking the initiative!

Re: Master Thread for Boston (MA) and surroundings
I'll be around most of Feb as well, I think, and Saturdays generally will be good for me.
One reason the Burlington gathering happened a while ago was the visit of a Boglehead from afar to the area on that particular weekend. So discussion of alternate dates was soon dropped and we moved to the next step of picking a place.
If we can get a nucleus of 3-4 people for one date, it might be possible to have another gathering...

I'd definitely attend; the Burlington get-together was fun.
I think it would be worthwhile to re-introduce ourselves, to refresh our memories.
I'll bring name badges again.

Welcome. So let's narrow it down to 2/14 or 2/28, then.BH10 wrote:Sounds great! I could do either 2/14 or 2/28 (traveling on 2/21). Could also do Jan if there is more interest then but not 1/17 or 1/24. Thank you for taking the initiative!

Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
I'm interested in coming. I'd prefer the 28th.
Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
I am new in this forum but would be interested in meeting and learning from you guys. Saturdays in February should work for me.

Sounds that we're converging on Sat Feb 28th, then. With a core nucleus of interested parties. Any more takers?
Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
No offense to my fellow Bogleheads, but I would much rather spend Feb 14 with my wife.
Any of the other Feb dates are fine with me.

^ Agreed. The Burlington meetup occurred shortly after we moved into the city, sans car, so we couldn't attend. Looks like 28 Feb will be fine for us.Timoneer wrote:No offense to my fellow Bogleheads, but I would much rather spend Feb 14 with my wife.

Look forward to Feb 28th meet...
Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
Unfortunately, I now have a conflict on the 28th (will be out of the state) and won't be able to attend, though I really enjoyed the previous get-together in Burlington this summer.
So I guess that means someone else will have to do name badges, and compile the list of attendees (so those of us who don't come will know what we missed).
Any takers?
Hope to see you all at the next one!

Ok, we're settled on Feb 28th, 2015 (12pm). Let's discuss the location now.
As an attempt to make things simple... Any objection to do it at the same place as the previous meeting, i.e. Burtons Grill in Burlington, MA? I believe it worked well.

That sounds good to me.
Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
I thought it has changed name. There is also a new place next to LL BEAN in that shopping plaza.siamond wrote:Ok, we're settled on Feb 28th, 2015 (12pm). Let's discuss the location now.

Yup, no problem, it is still there. Here is a better URL: http://site.burtonsgrill.com/stores/burlington-ma/siamond wrote:Doesn't seem like it from the Web site. Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
So... nobody expressed unhappiness with this choice, and I stopped by Burtons Grill around noon time. It is a tad unsettling from the outside, it looks kind of closed, but it's just the glass walls which are very opaque. This does look like a suitable place (and worked well in the past). So I made a reservation for February 28th, at noon, for 10 to 20 people (we'll have to be more specific later on, of course), for the separate area of the restaurant dedicated to biz meetings and large parties.
Please mark your calendars!

I'd be interested. Although, as someone who grew up in Neponset, I don't think Burlington can be considered "Boston".

I may be able to make this. I will put it on my calendar

Please change the name of this Chapter to NORTH of Boston Chapter.
Of course you could always do what was proposed, and i thought agreed upon previously, and alternate meeting locations.
Alternately, those of us located SOUTH of Boston can form our own chapter should we choose to do so.
Thank you,
~Moshe

Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
Er... Moshe, it would seem a bit silly to have a north vs south divide. I guess that your real issue is the location being chosen? I requested feedback about it since Jan 8th and was trying to keep things simple:
http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/posting ... #pr2326029
If I am the one organizing next time, I'll be happy to try to find a location more friendly to the south of Boston with your help, but for this round, nobody had an issue (until today), and the reservation is made, sorry. Burtons Grill is located near exit 32B on the I-95, this should not be such a bad drive from the South of Boston on a Saturday? I still hope to see you at this meeting...

Hi siamond,
I agree with your sentiment about it being a "bit silly" please refer to the previous discussion about the meeting location and the next one being south of the city. If i had known this current discussion was taking place i would have been happy to provide alternative feedback.

Ok, last call and one more reminder...
February 28th is getting pretty close, if you're planning to come, please speak up ASAP, as I need to provide the size of the party to the restaurant in a few days...
Also, if you have in mind one theme or two to be discussed, it would be good to post about it here, so that we can all think a bit more about it beforehand. Although overall, this should be rather free-wheeling, I'd guess that the main point is to discover each other in person and establish contacts.

Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
We've just cancelled our plans to be out of town on Feb 28, so I'll be able to join the other Boston Bogleheads at Burton's on that Saturday.
That is, weather permitting - our concerns about the weather was the reason we cancelled our trip.
See you soon,
Eric

Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
Also, we need to have someone collect email addresses of all interested attendees.
We talked about it last time but it fell through the cracks.
We'll get the dozen or more from the attendees and then PM other thread repliers who could not attend.
This is how other successful chapters tend to do it.
This addresses the problem of people missing the announcement of the next likely meeting since they have more to do than to check the forum every few hours every day.
Subsequently, post the next proposed meeting initiative on the master thread.
Then send email to all active members from the past, with link to forum announcement...

Re: Master Thread for Boston's Chapter (MA)
I doubt I'll be able to make it (live in Boston w/o a car, and didn't realize it was happening until now), but hope you all have a great time!
I want to put my email in as suggested by "The Wizard" if possible, so that I can get a summary of the meeting (if someone is nice enough to provide that to the non-attendees), and will know when the next one is on the horizon so I can make a better effort to attend in person. Should I PM someone for that?
