Taylor Larimore, My Favorite Teacher

Post by mlebuf »

Prior to becoming King of the Bogleheads, Taylor was a mentor to many others. Many thanks for Bill Serle for posting this story in his blog:

What a wonderful tribute!

Here's a teaser from the blog post:
Taylor always wore a dark suit and red tie. He would stand with his right hand in his jacket pocket, raise his left hand high, and declare, “Seek truth in thought and the words will surely follow.”

Was there ever a teacher who wouldn't love to be remembered so fondly and vividly, decades afterwards? Kudos to Taylor.

I concur with that assessment that Taylor Larimore is
my teacher.

My wife and I had the good fortune of meeting with Taylor
in August 2014 and having 'teacher, student conference'
in person in Miami.

Thank you Taylor.

Taylor has certainly been a teacher for me, I have made constructive changes in my portfolio based on his and others advice (3 Fund Portfolio). This has made my life simpler and set a glide path for the rest of my investing life. He has also taught me and others how the be a true gentleman, I really appreciate people of his generation and how they helped build our wonderful country. So yes, I've learned a lot from him and always make it a point to read his posts.

What an inspiring story! To think that someone remembers somethings from decades ago is special. Mr Larimore has to be feeling good. :)

I'm 26 years old and have already benefited tremendously the past year by Taylor's insightful posts. He has a knack for distilling decades of wisdom into easy to digest comments.

Once a teacher, always a teacher. Thank you!

Michael (my co-author) and others who replied:

Unless you are as old as I am (90), you have no idea how much it means to me to have a former student or Boglehead remember and thank me for lessons learned.

Best wishes.

Mine, too.

I started late to investing but have spent lots of time reading Bogleheads posts and have read some (and am steadily reading more) of the recommended books - starting off with The Bogleheads Guide to Investing and The Bogleheads Guide to Retirement Planning. Although I won't be wealthy (because I am starting so late), I will be just fine - thanks in great part to what I have learned and am learning here.

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing such a remarkable essay.

Taylor Larimore has taught my friends, family, and me many important financial lessons. Because of Taylor Larimore countless people all over the world will get a fair shake at wealth and a healthy retirement and it sounds like some are also better public speakers. :D

Thank you Taylor, for being the financial wiseman of the Internet.

Just want to wish Taylor a very happy 97th birthday.

I thought others might enjoy reading the story of this young man, now 50 years later, telling his story of success after getting a little help and boost of confidence from his favorite teacher, Taylor.

Cheers from Mary and Winnie
