Detroit Area Bogleheads - Master Thread

Post by daytona084 »

Welcome to the Detroit Area Bogleheads Master Thread.

The idea behind the master thread is to have our meeting notices and other news information in one place.

The important feature of the master thread is that you can "subscribe" to the thread, and receive an email when there is a new post. To do this, you click on the link on the bottom of the posting, that says "Subscribe Topic".

All Bogleheads (new and mature) are welcome, so feel free to come to our meetings, and bring along with you your spouse/friend/coworker.

If you want to be on our mailing list, or to get more information about the group, send a request to detroitbogleheads@yahoo.com.

Next Meeting - September 20th

Post by daytona084 »

Our next meeting will be Saturday September 20th, 10:30 AM to 12:00 Noon

Our subject for this meeting will be "Retirement". Keith had a great idea to stimulate discussion:

For the next meeting, everyone who is not retired should come with two non-financial questions about retirement. Everyone who is retired should come with two non-financial tips about retirement.

Of course, financial questions and tips concerning retirement are also welcome!

Bonus: Jack Haynes will also give a short presentation on a tour of Vanguard in Pennsylvania.

If there is time left over we can have a general discussion on whatever topics might come up. It's always good to hear informed advice and opinion.

Once again, the meeting will be at the:

Multi-Lakes Conservation Association
3860 Newton Rd, Commerce Township, MI 48382

Here is a map:

and here is a detail of the location, showing the location of the clubhouse:

Hope to see you there!

The State of Michigan will have a "Reinventing Retirement" workshop at various locations on Monday October 20, 2014. I have signed up for the Troy, MI location, and for the Social Security checkup.

Hi to all you Detroiters out there. I was born and raised in Detroit; lived near McNichols and Livernois. I've been gone a long time, but Detroit will always be my home and 'where I'm from...'

So you lived near U of D. I grew up one the east side, but my grandfather lived on Santa Rosa a couple blocks south of Outer Drive.

Enjoyed my first meeting of the Detroit Bogleheads.
I had a question I did not ask to the people that are currently retired.
Does anyone use Blue Cross Legacy Plan C for their Medicare gap / supplement insurance? If so, any news on what going to happen to the plan when the price freeze ends on Aug 2016. Thanks Paul

I have that plan. I don't know any news yet, but I'm speculating we will see a big hike. I'm budgeting for a 100% increase just to play it safe. That should put it in the ballpark of many other provider's plans. Hopefully I'm overestimating the damage.

Next Meeting - April 11th

Post by daytona084 »

Our next meeting is planned for April 11th at the usual time and place.

There will be no set topics for discussion

Instead, we are asking everyone to bring two "questions" or subjects for discussion. We often have fruitful discussions on the spur of the moment when people bring up topics, so we will have plenty of time at this meeting to pursue several of these in depth.

The usual time and place:
10:30 AM to 12:00 Noon

Next Meeting - April 30th 2016

Post by daytona084 »

Our next meeting will be in ten days, Saturday April 30th, 10:30 AM to 12:00 Noon

Subject: Spring cleaning! Keith will lead us through a discussion of some of the basic issues that concern us, or our children, or even our grandchildren.

An open discussion on issues that face younger investors. Led by the old salts.
  • You have an Asset Allocation. Now what? Which stocks? Which bonds? TIPS or other Treasuries? Individual stocks?
Student loans: Invest or pay off?
Cars: New or used? Buy or lease?
    Homes: Buy or rent?
    Mortgage: Invest or pay off?
Savings: How much of my income? Roth or traditional? What if my company does not have a savings plan?
Tax efficiency: Do I really need to worry?
College: What's the business case? What about student loans for me (or my kids)?
Please come with your questions, and be prepared for a good discussion. You will be surprised to hear that the old salts will tell you they should have done some things differently.

As usual, the meeting will be at the:

Next Meeting - Saturday January 28th, 2017

Post by daytona084 »

Our next meeting will be this Saturday January 28th, 10:30 AM to 12:00 Noon

For this meeting we are planning a discussion: "Bogleheads 101". We are asking two things:

1. Bring a (perhaps younger) guest with you to the meeting, who you think might benefit from or be interested in the discussion. We probably all can point to mistakes we've made, and how we wish we had "discovered" the Bogleheads philosophy sooner.

2. Prepare some of your own thoughts on the topic, "What is the Bogleheads philosophy?" Which aspects have you found most useful and beneficial? Some thought starters:
  • - Simplicity
    - Costs matter
    - Index mutual funds
    - Stay the course
    - Invest in the total market
    - Tilt investments towards small companies, real estate, gold and other commodities, ...
    - People that have influenced you
    - Books that you would recommend to others
    - Financial advisors
    - Strategies for saving
    - Living (a little) more frugally
    - Planning for college and other dependent (non-retirement) expenses
Also, Jack Haynes will discuss the results of a survey of members, and we will have a short discussion on the frequency and structure of future meetings.

As usual, the meeting will be at the:

Multi-Lakes Conservation Association
3860 Newton Rd, Commerce Township, MI 48382

The meeting takes place in the Clubhouse, straight ahead at the SW corner of the main parking lot. (Straight ahead and slightly left, as you drive in the main entrance.)

Do you know of any groups around Ann Arbor?

Next Meeting March 3rd, 2018. "Bogleheads 101"

Post by daytona084 »

This is a reminder - Next Meeting in 10 Days - March 3rd - 10:30 AM

Several members expressed interest in a "Bogleheads 101" presentation. So, that will be the topic at the next meeting March 3rd. Keith has volunteered to lead the discussion with a presentation entitled "Letters to My Son", which will cover the main points of the BH philosophy, combined with his personal wisdom and preferences. Here is the description:

In "Letters to my son." Keith reflects on advice he has given his young son, now 23.

Keith says, "I spent most of my adult life figuring this out - you don't need to do that. Here
I will give you the answers, tell you what to do, with only a brief explanation of why. But, I will
point you at lots of resources you can check for yourself. People like Taylor Larimore have spent
decades figuring this out, and companies like Vanguard have created mutual funds that exactly
meet your investment needs.

"You don't need to make the investing mistakes I did to find this out for yourself. Start with these
recommendations, then add what you need to cover extra requirements, like special needs
children or extended care insurance."

If you're new to Bogleheads, this is a great way to learn more. If you have been doing this a while, come with your experiences. In either case, bring a friend.

As usual, the meeting will be at the:

Multi-Lakes Conservation Association
3860 Newton Rd, Commerce Township, MI 48382

The time of the meeting is 10:30 AM to 12:00 noon.

Hope to see you there!

Re: Detroit Area Bogleheads - Master Thread

Question to my fellow SE MI residents:

The financial advisor my father and a couple siblings used recently passed away. The advisor owned & ran a small firm (him and a partner) and my family doesn't want to stick with that partner - need to move the accounts. Knowing that I'm fairly literate in this space, they asked me for input on their situation. I don't want to take over mgmt of their retirement accounts for several reasons. I was wondering if the Detroit Chapter Bogleheads may know of, and recommend, a couple local financial planners that follow the Boglehead investment philosophy. We're talking smaller portfolios ($1MM or less), so most of the big names I thought of likely would have no interest.

Not trying to turn this thread into a sales pitch for local FPs, so please PM me if you'd prefer. I'm just not sure where to point my family and afraid that they're going to get suckered by the first snake oil salesman they talk to, or "friend recommended them". I was hoping to get a couple recommendations for them to go interview.
