Taylor Larimore| 09-28-00

Our family owned "Larimore's Diner" in Foxboro, Mass. in 1929. I was 5 years old and remember. When the depression hit, we lost the Diner and moved into my grandfather's home in Miami. Grandfather, who was an investor and chief executive of an investment trust company, lost everything--including the Miami home we lived in.

These figures show what a REAL bear market is like:

BEAR MARKET OF 1929-1937 (Dow plunged 89%)
-1929--1930--1931--1932
(-31%)(-25%)(-43%)(-08%) Large Cap Stocks
(-34%)(-35%)(-47%)(-06%) Mid/Small Cap Stocks
(-47%)(-38%)(-50%)(-05%) Micro Cap Stocks

(+04%)(+07%)(-02%)(+09%) 5-Year Treasury Bonds

BEAR MARKET OF 1973-1976 (S&P fell 43%)
-1973--1974
(-15%)(-26%) Large Caps
(-39%)(-29%) Micro Caps

---(-70%) Coca-Cola
---(-82%) Intel
---(-73%) McDonald's
---(-86%) Merrill Lynch
---(-86%) Walt Disney
---(-71%) Xerox

Figures cannot convey the horrifying and debilitating effects of a bear market. You watch in agony as month after month your life savings evaporate before your eyes. Gloom and doom talk is everywhere. Nearly everyone else is selling. You have no idea when, or if, your portfolio will stop losing money.

Your friends and relatives urge you to sell. Nearly all financial experts recommend "sell". You are ridiculed for trying to hold on. You begin to have self-doubt. Dispair sets in. Buying stocks is unthinkable. Suicide's increase. That's a REAL bear market.

Now you understand why very few "old-timers" are 100% in stocks.

Best wishes.
Taylor

I nominate this one also. In fact, I have it saved and go back to it every now and then to protect myself from myself.

Unfortunately there have been some good topics/discussions shut down because people can't seem to help themselves. It shouldn't be difficult to keep a thread open when we are all playing by the same set of rules, yet some folks insist on "going there."

Hands down favorite: the Chuck Norris thread.viewtopic.php?t=59026 It features sayings like:

Chuck Norris Morningstar X-Ray:
100/100/100
100/100/100
100/100/100

When the yield on a Chuck Norris bond goes up, the price also rises.

Black Swans consider Chuck Norris a black swan event.

There are some real gems out there and I though it would be a nice idea to aggregate them into a single thread for us. PLEASE HELP!

I'll start...

IN A THREAD ENTITLED: "Who worries about a bear market in stocks?"
KlangFool wrote: Fri Oct 12, 2018 11:01 am
It is very simple.

Those that are not prepared for a bear market worry about the bear market.

I have a very simple philosophy in life. If I am worried about something, I would take action to prepare for it. I would not let my worry linger around. It makes my life relatively stress free.

Philosophies of life (and investing) don't get better than this IMO.
Retirement is a game best played by those prepared for more volatility in the future than has been seen in the past. The solution is not to predict investment losses but to prepare for them.

[edited OP to add cross-link to the thread of favorite quotes, and thread pointing to good older threads]

Just saw a great (older) post from Nisiprius about stock market risk and the lost decade: viewtopic.php?p=3875083#p3875179

Also adding some accumulated favorites from the last year, hoping that this is useful to others:

from the definitive thread on dollar cost averaging: viewtopic.php?t=132098#p1945575

nisiprius on bond risk when interest rates rise: viewtopic.php?p=4892400#p4892746

another nisiprius post on stock market risk: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=245211&newpost=3848772#p3846514

white coat investor on minimizing emergency medical expenses: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=238610&newpost=4510861#p3730622

Thank you to all who've added pointers to their favorite posts. I've read every one and am grateful.

I just re-watched "In a Lonely Place" with Humphrey Bogart on TCM. I enjoyed it even more than the 1st time I saw it. It's a different role for Bogie. His character is very flawed. And the film is very dark. [Not the film to watch if you need cheering up!]

I have been in the situation where two people fall in love quickly, but one eventually decides she can't stay in the relationship. Hopefully my character wasn't as bad as Bogie's? :confused
