New Wiki Toolbar

Post by Barry Barnitz »

Thanks to the efforts of LadyGeek and CyberBob, the wiki now has a new set of editing buttons. There's no need to know wiki syntax to do basic editing.
  • * The buttons use a layout similar to Microsoft Word and work exactly like they do in the forum, so most of you should be quite comfortable using the wiki editor.

    * To format your text, simply select the text first, then select the button. If you forget to select the text, an example will be shown in its place.

    * There's no need for documentation. Just place the mouse over the button and helpful text will be shown. Just like MS Word.

    * When done, use "Show Preview" to view / correct and "Save Page" to commit the change. This is the same as "Preview" and "Submit" in the forum.
Here is a screenshot of the new toolbar:

Image
File: - Add an image
Insert: - URL, wiki page link, table, block of text, references - footnote, wiki category, footer citation (the familiar "Please see Gold on the Bogleheads Wiki")
Format: Headings 1 through 5, font formats, paragraph alignment, bulleted and numbered list
Style: draw line, signature
Utility: Override wiki format, page redirection, Help (with useful tips)

If you are already an editor, feel free to tryout this update. Please edit Mutual fund on the Bogleheads Wiki. Also, any of the pages shown here.

If you wanted to edit the wiki, but felt it was too complicated to use, please try this new toolbar. All you need to do is PM Barry Barnitz and ask to be an editor.

Comments / suggestions are always welcome.

regards,
Additional administrative tasks: Financial Page bogleheads.org. blog; finiki the Canadian wiki; The Bogle Center for Financial Literacy site; La Guía Bogleheads® España site.

The wiki's toolbar has been updated to match Wikipedia's version (it's the same underlying software) and should be very easy to use. (Editors: My Preferences --> Editing --> Beta features boxes must be checked)

Image

In order from left to right: Bold, Italic, Embed a file, Signature, Link, and Reference (cite)

Some of the icons will pop-up a dialog box to help you.
- Click on the chain ("link") to enter a URL or wiki page (selection is at the bottom of the dialog box).
- At the far right is the table entry - selecting this icon will allow you to enter the number of rows and columns. Check the options you want and click "Insert". All you need to do is replace the "Example" text with your own and you have a table. Easy (at least easier than before).

- The Headings drop-down list starts at Level 2, as the page title itself is always Heading Level 1. This is no change from before, but it's now more obvious.

- Special Characters is better suited for non-English languages. Note that the Greek alphabet is available to help with your math formulas.

- Help opens into a large number of other formatting choices. Swipe your mouse over the desired format code and copy into the edit box. Underlines (<u>) and strikeout (<s>) text are not present, as they are actually HTML tags.

If you wanted to edit the wiki, but felt it was too complicated to use, please try this new toolbar. All you need to do is PM Barry Barnitz and ask to be an editor.

(Updated 30-Dec-11 to remove the Preview and Changes tabs.)

You're welcome. I just did a minor update to the wiki toolbar, reflected in the post above.
