How to format Tables

Post by grayfox »

Does anyone know and quick and easy way to format a table from a spreadsheet or other document?

When I cut and paste from Excel I get this:

GRAYFOX TOTAL RETURN
ASSET SYMBOL PERCENT PRINCIPLE YIELD INCOME GROWTH Nominal Real
DIVIDEND STOCKS DVY 37.5% 750 3.39% 25.4 4.61% 8.00%
NJ LT TAX-EXEMPT VNJTX 32.5% 650 4.11% 26.7 0.00% 4.11%
CD CD 5.0% 100 5.00% 5.0 0.00% 5.00%
TIPS (IRA) VAIPX 25.0% 500 2.27% 11.4 2.50% 4.77%

PORTFOLIO 100.00 2,000 3.42% 68.5 2.354% 5.78% 3.28%
EQUITIES 37.5% 750 52.1
FIXED 62.5% 1,250

I try code and it looks a little better:

Code: Select all

GRAYFOX							TOTAL RETURN
ASSET	SYMBOL	PERCENT	PRINCIPLE	YIELD	INCOME	GROWTH	Nominal	Real
DIVIDEND STOCKS	DVY	37.5%	 750 	3.39%	25.4	4.61%	8.00%
NJ LT TAX-EXEMPT	VNJTX	32.5%	 650 	4.11%	26.7	0.00%	4.11%
CD	CD	5.0%	 100 	5.00%   5.0	0.00%	5.00%
TIPS (IRA)	VAIPX	25.0%	 500 	2.27%	11.4	2.50%	4.77%

PORTFOLIO		100.0%	 2,000 	3.42%	68.5	2.354%	5.78%	3.28%

Here I edited it in text editor, removing all the tabs. This is time consuming with the extra steps.

Code: Select all

GRAYFOX                                                       TOTAL RETURN
ASSET SYMBOL PERCENT PRINCIPLE YIELD INCOME GROWTH Nominal Real
DIVIDEND STOCKS  DVY     37.5%    750      3.39%  25.4  4.61%  8.00%
NJ LT TAX-EXEMPT VNJTX   32.5%    650      4.11%  26.7  0.00%  4.11%
CD               CD       5.0%    100      5.00%   5.0  0.00%  5.00%
TIPS (IRA)       VAIPX   25.0%    500      2.27%  11.4  2.50%  4.77%

PORTFOLIO               100.0%  2,000      3.42%  68.5  2.354% 5.78% 3.28%

Try html pre tag inside your quote tags. If you look up in the Post subject, you'll see what I mean.
<pre>name address city state
red 3141 wilmington pa
yellow 5456 camden nj
margarine 6567 house md
orange 7887 dover de
</pre>
Also, you can save the sheet from Excel as fixed width text (I've heard). I'm not on PC right now, so I can't test that out. What it means is that Excel will change the text so that it appears as "tabbed", but spaces are actually added to fill out the column sizes.

I've been mucking in OpenOffice Calc, and found a way to add spaces by using REPT and CONCATENATE, and that's how i produced the text above. I added quote and pre tags in this editor.

You could do all of the tagging and formatting in Excel. I might try that, and post a tutorial.

If you save the sheet in html format, that might work.

Easiest way I have found to paste excel tables is by converting them to picture files.

If you hold down the shift key......a new option becomes available in the Edit functions.....called Copy Picture. I generally then paste the picture into powerpoint.......right click and create a picture file. I also tried out the new tinypic tip recently posted ......tinypic.com.......

I am still lost. I would like my tables to appear as they do in the second example of the original posters message.

Furthermore, I don't wanna have an excel file open and all that jazz. I actually miss the old site's abiltiy to <tt> & </tt> and make tables.

Is there nothing like that here? I don't even know what that "code" button is for??

Any help?

tt, which denotes a fixed-width font (typewriter text, or similar to the Courier New font for computers) works inside quote boxes, just as the pre tag does, as mentioned above by Target2019.
<pre>This was written without using any tags
<pre>This was written using the pre tag</pre>
<tt>This was written using the tt tag</tt>
On this board, using the Code button is the easiest way to do it. The Code button automatically outputs the text in a fixed-width font just as the tt tag would. (note: in the window where you are actually writing the message, things may not look properly aligned because that window does not use a fixed-width font. Use the Preview button to see what it will actually look like when posted in the fixed-width font.)

Code: Select all

This was written without using any tags, just the Code button.

Fund        Amount

EFGHX      $22,459

Here is a simple HTML table. Is there an expert who knows why the table is forcing so much white space (scroll way down.) I've tried many things, but have not found a solution.

The HTML was created by an online generator at:

http://area23.brightbyte.de/csv2wp.php

I copied my text directly from a spreadsheet. Then I pasted the text into the HTML generator. I checked off TAB as the delimiter. Once the table displays, you "view source" from your browser. All of the HTML can be pasted in your post.

Perhaps this is a phpBB thing, and can't be solved.

<table>

<td>Fund Name</td>

<tr>

<td>Guaranteed Interest (3-4%)</td>
<td>3.8%</td>
<td>18.8%</td>
</tr>
<tr>

<td>EQ/Equity 500 Index</td>
<td>10.9%</td>
<td>53.3%</td>
</tr>
<tr>

<td>EQ/Small Co. Index - Russell 2000</td>
<td>5.7%</td>
<td>27.9%</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>SUBTOTAL TSA</td>
<td>20.4%</td>
</tr>

SIMPLEST WAY

Post by bzboy »

Have your excel save the file in .prn (this is fixed width).

Copy and paste the relevant lines here between "code" tags.

Yes, fixed width excel save was mentioned very early on in this thread.

Code and pre do not always appear correctly in the browser, What I am searching for is a table, and the ability to paste the data in as few steps as possible.

For you, saving in fixed width, the opening with an editor, then copying, then pasting into this editor, then selecting, then hitting the code button, may be the simplest.

For me, I'd like to find out why an HTML table ends up with so much space above it.

Don't think HTML. Think plain-text without any formatting.

Code: Select all

Plan Fund Name Overall AA % of Pln
TSA  Guaranteed Interest (3-4%)          3.8%       18.8%

Doesn't line up in my browser. Surprise! I suspect others have the same difficulty.

Let's face it, not being able to paste (or make) a table is a big shortcoming.

Having to twiddle with these things is ok with me. I can put it in several formats and get it to the world, no problem.

Now why is that html table pushed several inches down the page?

P.S. I'm in training, with some people you'd all like to meet, but I can't say!

Here's a hint: you're investments are safe!

Has this changed since 2007?

For markdown text as an example (which is NOT phpbb compatible) I use this to make a table:
http://excel2wiki.net/

Is there any interest in a resource that would convert a tab formatted tabular input to a code formatted block?

Sorry, I don't know of anything other than a word processor that can translate the tab formatted table to spaces (code formatted block).

FYI - http://excel2wiki.net/ is a good resource for wiki editors.

You can also use the command line. "expand -tx,x,x" in unix or "more /tx" in MS. Versions of the more flexible expand are also available for windows. Sometimes it's easier than trying to beat a word processor into submission. Many word processors really want you to use the native table features and are not overly helpful with fixed width formatting.

It's also worth mentioning the figure space, unicode 0x2007.

This is supposed to be the same width as a digit, so can be used to pad short numbers in a table. Unfortunately not all fonts implement the spec correctly.
Here's some numbers, the spaces are all figure spaces.

Thanks, that'll work. This is a 2-step process.

First, convert the tabs to spaces:

Code: Select all

$expand Filename > test.txt
Then, use a plain text editor to find-n-replace the sequence of 8 spaces to periods. grok87's test is using a different character set:

Code: Select all

year ……. var 1 ……. var 2 ……. var 3 ……. var 4 ……. var 5

Best I've come up with is to paste into a text editor that can convert tabs to spaces, then copy/paste within the tags.

First paste into the editor, then insert additional tabs to get things to line up approximately correctly, then convert tabs to spaces, then do the additional tweaking to fine tune it.

I use Google Sheets and the Caret text editor app on Chromebook. Convert tabs to spaces is in the Caret Edit menu.

You can also use a formula in a spreadsheet.

I copied this from the
4 h Tilting to small caps? 16:38 thethinker 21:50 stlutz
9 p 401k loan 17:25 Miler407 21:48 jimb_fromATL

18 p Social Security Made Simple (Free on Kindle for 2 Days) 16:08 ObliviousInvest 21:46 Big Dog

I removed the dates and edited a title and got this with a spreadsheet

Code: Select all

Yikes! I love spreadsheet formulas, but I think I can do the minimal editing required in a decent text editor much faster than I could create a formula like this.

Cool idea though, but could you explain your process in more detail?

If I copy 5 rows of posts from https://www.bogleheads.org/ and paste into a spreadsheet, I get 5 spreadsheet rows, but your formula references only rows 2 and 15. The formula would have to reference rows 1-5, 2-6, etc. to work with what is pasted into my spreadsheet.

If I then copy/paste from spreadsheet into code, I see this:

Code: Select all

3	p	Should I buy long-term disability insurance?	10:21	zn62	13:53	quantAndHold
6	c	Get a grip! (on your iPhone)	10:36	packet	13:53	desiderium
47	c	What am I missing ? ... Smart Phones $100 vs. $600	12/2/2015	BahamaMan	13:52	stratton
16	t	Bond vs Bond Fund (I'm not grasping)	21:34	thethinker	13:51	alex_686
1	h	TIps/IBonds in a 0 tax state	1:28	AKdream	13:48	headmaster
Delete date/time columns in spreadsheet (5-10 seconds), copy/paste into editor (5-10 seconds), align columns with extra tabs (1 minute max), convert tabs to spaces (5 seconds), then tweak edit (10 seconds) and I get this:

Code: Select all

3    p  Should I buy long-term disability insurance?        zn62        quantAndHold
6 c Get a grip! (on your iPhone) packet desiderium

If the goal is to share a file with this audience why not just create a Drop Box account , upload the file , and then create a "share" link using the tools within Drop Box ?

However , I suppose this wouldn't be a good idea if the spreadsheet information was personal and confidential .

That's a good idea, but I think some people don't like to click on links (either because they don't trust them or just don't want to bother). I use links a lot as well, but based on subsequent replies, sometimes get the sense that some folks haven't bothered to follow them.

For spreadsheets, no need to even use something like drop box, since you can simply provide the link to a Google Sheets spreadsheet.

Regarding confidential info, it's easy enough to copy to a new spreadsheet, remove confidential info, and share that.

It would be nice if forum software handle spreadsheet copy/paste as well as something like blogger does.

I probably could have been clearer , Drop Box works the same as Google Drive , the person wanting to share a file provides a link to the file that resides in that person's Drop Box folder in the cloud - it works the same as providing a link to a file sitting on someone's Google Drive .

I probably could have been clearer , Drop Box works the same as Google Drive , the person wanting to share a file provides a link to the file that resides in that person's Drop Box folder in the cloud - it works the same as providing a link to a file sitting on someone's Google Drive .
Got it. Just saying that if you use Google Sheets already (as do I), no need to use an additional application to share it. I guess if you use Drop Box (which I don't) as your working file storage for Excel (or whatever), which I don't, it works basically the same.

looking at this on mobile, my method didn't work very well.

The photo method looks best, perhaps with a link to the actual spreadsheet

Try using Excel's Print to File feature to format a selection on a spreadsheet. Chose "Generic / Text Only" as the printer. Clean up the file in Notepad using a fixed-width font.

This online converter makes it very easy to generate good looking text only tables from Excel:
https://tableconvert.com

1. Copy the data in Excel.

2. Visit the https://tableconvert.com, click Import, paste from Excel, click Import Data button.

3. Scroll down to view the converted table, select the Text option and then click the Copy button to copy the text to your clipboard.

4. To paste into a message, start writing your message, click the "code display" tool bar button and then paste the text between the code tags.

Here is an example:

Code: Select all

^^^ Thanks!

tonyclifton has also updated the wiki: Posting FAQ for the Bogleheads® forum (How do I create a table in my forum post?)

Looking at Table Convert Online in detail, it can convert to / from quite a number of formats. Use the Import button at the top of the page to import your data.

To save some questions, More --> BBCode is also available. Those BBCodes are not implemented here. A google search suggests they may be problematic in practice. I also don't see them listed in the phpBB Custom BBCodes customization database.

To the wiki editors:

In addition to the usual suspects, the site supports MediaWiki tables. Look for the MediaWiki tab and give it a try. Feel free to use the Sandbox for testing your edits.

Do those problems apply to the s9e text formatter that phpBB uses? Its author says unsafe markup is rejected.
https://s9etextformatter.readthedocs.io ... s#security

Table elements are in the list of included bbcodes.

Apparently they just need to be turned on.

Those pages describe how the phpBB source code itself implements BBCodes. It doesn't describe how a user implements an HTML table in a post.

It's not just creating HTML for the table elements (what the BBCode does), but that you need to format those tables and make them work for both desktop and mobile devices.

I found an extension in development that uses BBCodes: phpBB • [RC] Tables

I installed the extension in my test environment and tried the table in this post. The member is showing an image, not the actual table, and I didn't get his error (OK). I was able to reproduce the table (prosilver colors - what we use here) on my desktop, but when I switched to my mobile device (Android), Chrome decided to rearrange that 3 x 3 table into a single 9 x 1 column. That won't work for what we do here.

More formatting (CSS) is needed to control how your browser displays tables. BBCode alone is not a good solution. Plain text using the </> (code) BBCode tags isn't fancy, but it will work everywhere.
