@goonie
You could click on their "Contact" link and send them a PM and invite them to join a topic.

I notice your "Contact" link is not visible, so assume that means you've decided you don't what to be contacted. That's okay... but you must allow others the same courtesy you assume for yourself.
Thanks, I appreciate the suggestion. Yeah, I wouldn't send someone a PM if I don't have that functionality turned on for myself. That wouldn't be cool.

When appropriate you could quote them. Depending on their notification settings, I.e. ucp.php?i=ucp_notifications&mode=notification_options, they should be notified about the topic/post.

Key phrase there being "[d]epending on their notification settings". I'm one who has turned off almost all notifications related to thread activity because I can see that just fine through the fact that "Your posts" shows new posts in the threads. Something about how Notifications icon turns red just disquiets me. I've also turned off almost all email notifications except for PMs and moderator actions because I have enough email to sort through.

Ditto. It requires additional action on my part to manage email notifications (delete after viewing). But no additional action on my part to manage my "Notifications" in banner.

Re: Please Try Out Test Posts Here

Post by #Cruncher »

Starting a few weeks ago my own images in my own posts stopped displaying on two browsers: Edge and Chrome on a Windows 10 PC. Instead I get a tiny generic picture thumbnail and the word "Image" next to it. Right-clicking on the thumbnail or the word "Image" and choosing "Load image" does nothing. But right-clicking and choosing "Open image in new tab", does display the picture properly in that tab. The picture does display within the post if I use Firefox or Internet Explorer or if I use Safari on a Mac.

Images from other posters appear properly with all browsers. I prefer to use Edge to navigate the Bogleheads forum so this problem is an annoyance. Here is an example of an image that I have the problem with, from this post.

Edited 5:50 PM. Now that I've resolved problem (see end of this post) I'm suppressing images to avoid clutter.

Code: Select all

[img]http://eyebonds.info/bheads/images/SS/TaxableSSPass85%25With63574OtherIncome.gif[/img]
And here is an image from another poster that I don't have problem with, from this post in the same thread:

Code: Select all

[img]https://i.imgur.com/nNXwicY.png[/img]
Any help will be appreciated.

A suggestion: try Edge/Chrome on a copy of the same image stored on the same web server but use a file name that does not contain a '%' character (the file name used was "TaxableSSPass85%With63574OtherIncome.gif").

A suggestion: try Edge/Chrome on a copy of the same image stored on the same web server but use a file name that does not contain a '%' character (the file name used was "TaxableSSPass85%With63574OtherIncome.gif").
To explain, the '%' character is part of the URL encoding that your browser (and forum software) understands. It just so happens that the percent sign '%' is represented as '%25' when it's encoded.

The problematic image link:

Code: Select all

[img]http://eyebonds.info/bheads/images/SS/TaxableSSPass85%25With63574OtherIncome.gif[/img]
is not fully encoded. Perhaps that's why it's broken in MS Edge, but looks OK in Firefox (what I'm using).

This link should work:

Code: Select all

[img]http://eyebonds.info/bheads/images/SS/TaxableSSPass85%With63574OtherIncome.gif[/img]
Or, this one (fully url encoded)

Code: Select all

[img]http%3A%2F%2Feyebonds.info%2Fbheads%2Fimages%2FSS%2FTaxableSSPass85%25With63574OtherIncome.g[/img]
Another aspect is that the link is not secure. It should use the https:// protocol. That's a different problem - but needs to be fixed. (Make it a priority, as Chrome will stop using non-secure sites very soon. My browser won't display the image due to security.)

The likely problem is the security issue.

Edge/Chrome is likely automatically trying to load the image as https://eyebonds.info/... rather than http://eyebonds.info/... but eyebonds.info has an invalid security certificate. Because of the invalid security certificate, the browser is refusing to load the image and shows a broken image thumbnail.

Two ways to get Edge/Chrome to show the image are:
  • have the owner of eyebonds.info install a valid certificate
  • configure Edge/Chrome to allow insecure content in a https://www.bogleheads.org/ page
The "Open image in new tab" works because the new tab is for http://eyebonds.info, for which there is no mixed https:/http: security issue.

Thanks, FactualFran, but I have the same problem with files having simple alphabetic names like "vgTIPSgraph.gif".

Code: Select all

[img]http://eyebonds.info/bheads/vgTIPSgraph.gif[/img]

Same problem also with .jpg and .pdf files. One thing the problem files have in common is that they are all stored on my web site, eyebonds.info.

Thanks for the info about the "%" character in URLs, LadyGeek. But as I explain in my response to FactualFran I have the same problem with files that have no special characters in their names.

Maybe the problem does have to do with the URL being non-secure (http and not https). Unfortunately I don't know how to make images I store on my web site secure. By the way, I don't understand why it should be necessary to do so. I thought one wanted security to prevent others from viewing one's web activity. In this case I want them to view it!

Thanks. I'm the owner of eyebonds.info, but I'd rather not fool with certificates. Instead I'll try and see how I can make Edge "allow insecure content in a https://www.bogleheads.org/ page".

Edited 5:45 PM. Voila! Following FactualFran's suggestions I just told Edge to allow insecure content on www.bogleheads.org, and now my pictures appear. I hope there are no bad side effects.

From Binging "let Edge browser display insecure content"
Open Edge settings from the menu. Go to in Settings > Site Permissions (or type edge://settings/content in the address bar). Click on the option Insecure content. On the next page, check out the list of web sites under the Block and Allow sections.

The side effect is it only works for you, not everyone else. So you might see the images but many others won't because their browsers don't allow mixed content.

Check out https://letsencrypt.org/, it's free and easy to enable secure HTTPS connections to your site.

As noted by Peculiar_Investor, browser's won't allow mixed content. You really, really do want to fix your site. Once you move your site over to https://, everything on the site will follow - including your images.

You can do it for free. See: Let's Encrypt - Free SSL/TLS Certificates This site makes it as easy as it can possibly be. Just follow the instructions. It's a popular site, lots of support if you need it.

You're right to use the BBCode "code" block, FoolStreet. But you need to separate columns with spaces, not tabs. Do this in a text editor or word processor using a monospace font until it looks right and then copy it into your reply post. Here's your table after I did that:

You're right to use the BBCode "code" block, FoolStreet. But you need to separate columns with spaces, not tabs. Do this in a text editor or word processor using a monospace font until it looks right and then copy it into your reply post. Here's your table after I did that:

Code: Select all

Corp Desc Ticker Tax Treatment SEC Yield ER Duration (yrs)
-------- ------------------- ------ ------------------- --------- ----- --------------
Vanguard National Tax Exempt VTEB National Tax Exempt 0.96% 0.06% 5.10
iShares Nat'l AMT Free Muni MUB National Tax Exempt 0.86% 0.07% 6.05
iShares CA Muni CMF CA Muni 0.59% 0.25% 6.30
Invesco CA Muni PWZ CA Muni 1.10% 0.28% 7.29
Thanks #cruncher and ladygeek and fivek. This is kinda hard but I'll figure it out. Going to try a few more times...

Not that I didn't believe you, but - yeah - had to paste into my word processor and manually type the spaces. Thanks for the help!

Did you try the Table Convert Online tool referenced in the Wiki FAQ from FiveK's post above? It's cool! Here's its output when I pasted in the table after quoting your original post. [*]

Code: Select all

| Corp | Desc | Ticker | Tax Treatment | SEC Yield | ER | Duration (yrs) |
|----------|---------------------|--------|---------------------|-----------|-------|----------------|
| Vanguard | National Tax Exempt | VTEB | National Tax Exempt | 0.96% | 0.06% | 5.1 |
| iShares | Nat'l AMT Free Muni | MUB | National Tax Exempt | 0.86% | 0.07% | 6.05 |
| iShares | CA Muni | CMF | CA Muni | 0.59% | 0.25% | 6.3 |
| Invesco | CA Muni | PWZ | CA Muni | 1.10% | 0.28% | 7.29 |
* Steps:
  • Go to the Table Convert Online tool.
  • Click [Import] at the top.
  • Make sure the "Excel" tab on the far left is selected in the Import Data dialog.
  • Paste in the tab-separated table. (I got this by quoting your post that displays the table. It doesn't work if you simply copy and paste from the post.)
  • Click the [Import Data] button at the bottom-right of the dialog box.
  • Make sure the "Markdown" tab on the far left is selected.
  • Click the [Copy] button. (Be sure to leave "Pretty-print your markdown" selected under "Options".)
  • Paste into your forum reply post inside a code block.

Finally, all that time spent as a child reading things upside down and in a mirror pays off! But also nice to see that phpBB supports a wide range of Unicode characters.

And to keep this actionable, keep in mind that not all password prompts will support Unicode, so use caution in using this method for your passwords.

Pasting in from Excel and columns are displaying out of alignment

Post by ljb »

I am trying to paste in from a 3 column excel spreadsheet, but empty cells are causing the columns to display out of alignment. Is there an easy fix?

Code: Select all

$350,000	$350,000
$200,000 $200,000
$80,000 $80,000
	$350,000	$280,000
