UK : Age 58 - 5k to invest - Best funds to choose?

Post by OlderInvestor »

Good morning all

I have a very tiny 5k value to invest in a vanguard SIPP (has to go in there as coming from a NEST pension)

New to vanguard, just want to put this money someway decent for another 10/15 years, now aged 58....

I wont be adding to it at all, I will just leave it in the fund as spare money sort of thing

Any tips on a reasonable choice.. I am not adverse to slightly higher risk

I was going to go for the S & P 500 but now not so sure

I appreciate I may not have given enough information so please feel free to ask questions

My best wishes

VTI or VOO

Small amount so keep it simple.

Edit: didn’t realize non-US investor.

100% US stocks would be an ... unusual bias for a UK investor.

I'd suggest choosing one of the LifeStrategy funds. Perhaps 60% or 80% stocks, though 100% stocks could be entirely reasonable if you have bond-like investments elsewhere (not revealed). Accumulation units would mean you would never have to touch this investment at all until withdrawals.

For clarity, these and other US-specific fund options won't be open to a UK investor (UK-ness not specified anywhere in the original post, but inferred from the use of the terms "SIPP" and "NEST").

Thank you all so far for your responses.. I really appreciate it...

Thanks TedSwippet... I was just coming back to ask about where to find the funds suggested.
And now I see they are american choices... unless of course there is an equivalent UK version?

Sorry I assumed you would know I was in UK as using the Non -US Investors - Non US investing board :)

Happy to accept any more ideas... :D

VUSA is Vanguard's S&P 500 tracker ETF, directly equivalent to VOO (and close to VTI). Or as an OEIC, US Equity Index, broadly equivalent to VTI, and accumulating so entirely hands-off (unlike distributing ETFs).

Again though, are you sure you want to hold 100% US stocks as a UK investor?

Folk using the unindexed front-end don't get much indication that a post is in the 'Non-US Investing' forum. A tiny 'n' in the 'Subforum' column -- can you spot it?! -- and extremely easily missed.

Also, of course, 'non-US' encompasses around 190 countries besides the UK. :-)

A friendly tip: you can edit any of your posts by clicking the "pencil" icon at the top right of the post. This includes the post title ("Subject:"). If you do this with the first post in a thread, this changes the title shown in the list of threads.

You might want to do this to your opening post in this thread, and add something like "[UK}" to the title.

Vanguard global index fund, don't bet all your money on the US market (which is two thirds of global stocks anyway)

ETF, VWRP is the accumulating version
