Software for filing 1099-NECs
Hi,
For my small business, I paid two entities greater than $600 in the year 2021. For the prior year, I filled my 1099-NEC on paper and sent it to the IRS by snail mail. I created a FIRE account with the IRS and I was looking forward to doing the process online this time. I then found that on IRS pub 1220 (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1220.pdf page 3), it says that I should find software providers using "internet search for “Form 1099 software providers.” We don’t accept scanned or PDF documents." My google search resulted in potentially shady looking websites. Please give me some pointers on some reliable softwares/websites that do the job electronically for cheap.
Thanks!

I've used Track1099 (https://www.track1099.com/) to file hundreds of 1099's and it's worked out great.

I use efilemyforms.
https://www.efilemyforms.com/
I haven’t used any of the other sites mentioned above. Efilemyforms has an excel template you can load up your data which makes it nice when you have hundreds or thousands of forms to file. The support has been pretty good too. They can’t help you with tax advice, but they know the website and the templates and how to get it to work. The support was very technical every time I called.
I use it for 1099s, 1095s, and w2s.
For 1099s, I believe there is a way for you to have it emailed to the recipient but I have never used that functionality. I just have it mailed and save a final copy to a pdf for archive. If the vendor asks later on for a copy I then have it at my fingertips. You can always log in and download a pdf copy too (I have never tested how long your pdf stays available on the website).
Just as another note- if you ever make a mistake or need to modify a filing, usually you can only do it with the same company- and perhaps even the same user name that was used- as the original filing. Just a word of caution. I once had a 1099 that was filed in error (check payment, check lost, replacement via direct deposit, original check never cleared or cancelled) so the person got reported double on their 1099 vs what should have been reported. They were in a long dispute with the IRS about taxes due because the IRS thought their income was double. Because I didn’t have any of the original logins or even know where it was originally filed, I had to go to a big cpa firm and they were able to help me with a strange paper filing. It took a while but we got it cleared up.

With a google search, I found a couple of other options in the same price range, which might be equally good too.
I don't know if Track1099 has a referral program; if they did, looking back, I should have PMed you and asked for a referral.

A lot of my clients use Yearli https://yearli.com/. It's easy to use, and there's a no-subscription plan where you can just pay per form filed. According to their website, 2 1099-NECs will cost you $11, which includes filling with the IRS as well as emailing, printing and mailing to the recipient.
Track1099 will charge you $6 for 2 but won't print/mail.

I have been using Yearli for about 10 years (formerly named something else I forget - they changed a few years back). I process anywhere from 5-10 1099s per year.Tamarind wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 4:04 pm A lot of my clients use Yearli https://yearli.com/. Yearli will also file for your state - if needed - for that $11.
It has worked flawlessly for me.

I too have 2 or 3 1099-NEC's to fill out every year with my small business. I can see how it might be a hassle for most, but I just get the paper forms from the IRS website, and type them up on a typewriter and mail them out. Saves the fee of using a third party software package.

Re: Software for filing 1099-NECs
I was doing 1099-NECs on paper form as well. I have a question now that i have two 1099-NECs to issue.
I know that for 1096, I will sum the two 1099-NEC numbers and list count=2 1099-NEC-forms on 1096. I will be mailing a single 1096 form with two 1099-NECs to the IRS and copies to the state etc.
For the 1099-NEC pink paper I get from the IRS, I get three forms on one pink paper.
The question is: Should I use (A) two such different pink papers (one per recipient) OR (B) should I write Recipient-1's 1099-NEC on the top and Recipient-2's 1099-NEC on the middle portion of the same pink page while leaving the third portion of the same pink page empty? Please let me know. This I could not figure and hence this time around I went with the online version.

Dear hameshatumkochaha,
I have always put two entries on one red sheet. My understanding and what I've done for ages is fill up a red sheet before starting a new one. So, for 1-3 entries, they all go on one red sheet to the IRS. If you had 4,5,or 6 entries, you'd use two sheets, etc.
