TurboTax TY2021
I just got an email with a coupon for pre-ordering. What do folks here normally do? Pre-order, or wait?
Also, which version of the downloaded copy do folks recommend (basic, deluxe, premier)? It seems like deluxe is the most appropriate (it includes a state filing).

looking forward to all the Fidelity Free Turbo Tax eligibility speculation threads...

Re: TurboTax TY2021
I buy/download from Amazon as soon as it comes out. I believe this year that will be on November 3rd.
I always get the Home and Business version because we have a couple Schedule C businesses. We could probably get by with Premier but H&B is only an extra $10 (at least on Amazon).

None of the TurboTax versions will outright prevent you from taking a deduction you've earned.
I use the Deluxe download and I have a Schedule C business. No issue.

+1 to this. Haven't paid a penny for filing taxes for the last 2 tax years.
Well, I live in a state where I don't have to file income taxes for (Florida), so that helps too.

I paid 39.99 from Amazon in late January. I think that's about as low as it goes, though sometimes they throw in a small gift card too. Target is usually comparable.
There's no reason to pre-order TT Deluxe for $70 right now. It's not like they'll run out of downloadable copies

Not if you sold any investments (Schedule D) or have a rental property. A busy year with a lot of TLH can be even too much for the online version, so you have to purchase the download version or CD. Bonus: you can file 5 federal e-files.anon_investor wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 7:35 pmThe premier version is unnecessary for most people..smartpants wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 7:24 pm Looks like they're charging 90$ for the Premier version.

Re: TurboTax TY2021
I have followed TT pricing for 20 years. Here’s my take. Desktop Basic is never discounted but is all you need if you are willing to play some games. To wit: if you “try before you buy” the cloud Premium or Deluxe version and start the state section, you can till save your work to your desktop. If you then open that file in a purchased “Basic” desktop version you can see ALL the forms including sate. I don’t care for the interview format, forms is mostly all I need unless I get an error flag.
In my old age, it is easier to get the same price for Deluxe desktop as Basic desktop by waiting for THE one sale day of the year on Amazon to get Deluxe desktop with gift cards. In 2020, it was Dec 26. It has been Dec 28 in other years as noted up thread.
Again, every version of desktop has all the forms. I can’t speak to guidance. If you want state included, you can get Deluxe. But Basic gives you the exact same result, if you are willing willing to play some games between cloud and desktop versions.

I believe that there's one day every year when Amazon sells the disc version of TurboTax Deluxe Plus State for the Costco coupon price ($39.99) and throws in a $10 Amazon gift card. I got it last year - on December 26. I'll be looking for it again this year.

Re: TurboTax TY2021
I just got the annual TurboTax email as well. As in past years, those discounts are nothing special (mine was just $10 off full retail, as has been typical for Intuit's early offers in past years). I typically just start watching Amazon now, and grab a better deal between now and year-end ($25 off or more is what I look for). Plus, in my case this year, I'm still deciding whether to stick with TurboTax again....
There is little advantage to getting the package early anyway, in the absence of a real deal. While they will release the software on Nov. 3 (last I looked), I have seldom found it useful until late December or January (when most of the forms are finally there). That's at least true for the forms that I generally need.
I'm sure Deluxe is all most need, but Premier works out a bit better for me in terms of more guidance (mainly for investment issues, and mine are complex) and breadth of the interview questions. I do multiple family returns and the $30 price diff is trivial anyway. For most, either will work. Home and Business version will generally be a good fit for those that are self-employed (although I was and, for my simple case, Premier was still enough). And having rental property will push you towards either Premier or Home and Business.

Re: TurboTax TY2021
H&B Costco
However TurboTax does not file CA Form 568 which is infuriating when they claim 'everything for your home and small business' on the box.
To send it you have to:
1. Request an e-file waiver from CA State.
2. Give a reason, like TT sucks on this.
3. Waiver is granted via email.
4. Print 568 on your home printer.
5. Find an envelope.
6. Send via snail mail.
Unfortunately some people are not clear on this, as naturally they think TT will do all the filing, and they get fined/penalized.

For years, I've been irritated about having to do a return at all. It should be already filled out and ready for my signature, as is the case in lots of those socialist countries in Europe.
This year I had to wait a long time for IRS to do its thing. While I was waiting, I signed up for the account that lets me see my tax transcript. It was amazing. Before they processed my return, they had 53 pages of information on me about my compensation and stock transactions. I saw with my own eyes that they really do already have all the info. Grr. Why am I paying $69 to some software company?
This being my first year on Bogleheads, I decided to do something to limit my expenses. Thanks for pointing out FreeTaxUSA. I will give them a try!

I no longer use TurboTax because it doesn't support Form 8997, needed for reporting of QOZ funds.
AFAIK, TaxAct is the only DIY tax software program that does support that form.

Based on past experience:
1. No you don't really need Premier for investments and rental income in spite of their efforts to get you to pay more. The cheaper Deluxe version does all that just fine.
2. Wait until Black Friday or a little after - there's typically a promotion that effectively gets you the Deluxe + 1 state for $30: see this from last year viewtopic.php?f=11&t=333887. Waiting makes sense as the initial release will do very little - there's still much that the IRS has to finalize. By about mid-December, with all the updates installed, you can typically have a pretty good picture of your taxes.

I had investments and a rental property the past couple of years, which the Deluxe (desktop) version handled just fine. This is common across all programs and everything is usually complete by around Mar 15 (if not earlier). Re: TurboTax TY2021
In my experience, forms are typically finalized sometime in January. State forms (at least Missouri's) usually lag a couple weeks behind federal. I can't remember the last time I had to wait on Turbotax before I could file - usually I'm still waiting on 1099s weeks after Turbotax is ready to go.
But even if the forms aren't finalized yet I've been able to get an estimate of my taxes sometime in December.

I buy TT online each year, and like it better than download (I can easily move between different PC's/chromebooks, whether at work or home). My costs end up to be half yours, depending upon the Fidelity discount (varies year to year, and even month-to-month).ImmigrantSaver wrote: ↑Fri Oct 29, 2021 1:15 pm Question. I've been using the TT online version every year when doing taxes and end up paying $150-180. Seems like buying the download desktop version is much cheaper, but will it sync with my previous years returns?
To answer your question, [with Online] you can download your *.tax file after filing, in addition to the pdfs. I archive the .tax and pdfs, and it can be imported into other tools (including TT download, or other vendors).

What does paying $150-180 has to do with the TT2021? Were you paying that to TurboTax aka Intuit or you are talking about paying that to US Treasuries aka IRS?ImmigrantSaver wrote: ↑Fri Oct 29, 2021 1:15 pm Question. I was talking about the cost of TT Intuit, and not how much I owed to IRS (I only wish that was 180 bucks )wrongfunds wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 8:10 amWhat does paying $150-180 has to do with the TT2021? Interesting! Maximum I have paid to TT is about $50 for their Deluxe or Premier CD Usually I pick it up at Costco or order from Amazon.ImmigrantSaver wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 11:09 amI was talking about the cost of TT Intuit, and not how much I owed to IRS (I only wish that was 180 bucks )wrongfunds wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 8:10 amWhat does paying $150-180 has to do with the TT2021? If you use online version, do you have last year's data saved/archived locally?
